To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwis B. I-IEsLn'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Decker, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sharpening Plowshares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for sharpening plow shares, and it has for its object to produce a machine of this class of simple and eflicient construction in which the plow share, after being adjusted in position for operation, may be automatically ground or sharpened without further attention on the part of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to produce a machine of the character described including a continuously driven sharpening wheel and a spring supported or floating frame having a table supported for reciprocation upon which the object to be sharpened may be mounted in proper position to be presented to the sharpening or grinding wheel.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the general construction and operation of a device of the character described.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,Figure l is a side elevation of a plow sharpening machine constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5*5 in Fig. 4.

may be constructed in any suitable manner of material preferably including structural or angle iron, whereby lightness and strength may be combined. The frame supports a platform 1 equipped with bearings 2, 2 for a shaft 3 and a counter shaft 4. Bearings are provided upon the frame of the machine for the main shaft 5 having fast and loose pulleys 6, 7, said shaft being adapted to be driven by abelt 8 from any suitable source of power. A pulley 9 upon the main shaft transmits motion through a belt 10 to the shaft 3 bya band wheel 11 upon said shaft. The shaft 3 and counter shaft 4 are provided with intermeshing pinions 12, 12 which are loosely mounted upon said shafts and with sprocket wheels 13, 13 which are likewise loose upon the shafts, said sprocket wheels being connected by a chain 14. The hubs of the pinion 12 and the sprocket wheel 13 upon the counter shaft 4 are pro vided with clutch members 15, 16, either one of which may be engaged by a clutch 17 which is slidable upon the counter shaft with which it is connected for rotation by means of a key or spline 18. The clutch 17 has an annular groove 19 which receives one arm 20 of a bell crank B, the other arm of which 21 extends substantially at right angles to the arm 20. It will be readily seen that by throwing the bell crank lever the clutch 17 may be shifted between the clutch members 15 and 16 of the pinion 12 and the sprocket wheel 13, respectively, thereby reversing the direction of rotation. of the counter shaft 4. The top of the frame A is provided with boxes 22 affording bearings for a shaft 23 carrying the emery wheel 24 which is supported in the usual manner by a mandrel 25. The shaft 23 has a pulley 26 which is connected by a belt 27 with a band wheel 28 upon the main driven shaft 5 from which motion will thus be transmitted to the shaft 23.
Suitable bearings are provided for an upright or vertically disposed shaft 29 carrying at one end a worm gear 30 meshing with a worm 31 upon the counter shaft 4. The upright shaft 29 carries adjacent to its upper end a drum 32.
Pivotally connected with lugs 33 upon the platform 1 are arms or levers 34 connected adjacent to their free ends by a cross bar 35. The arms or levers are provided with hooks 36 which are connected with the top of the frame structure by means of springs 37,
tending to lift the said arms or levers. The frame structure includes flanges 38 forming guides for grooved wheels or rollers 39 connected with a plate 40 which is thus capable of moving up and down upon the frame structure, The plate 40 is equipped with bracket members 41 supporting a frame or table C which is composed of approximately parallel side members 42 which are con nected and spaced apart by end members 43, which latter are provided upon their inner faces with suitably supported guide members, such as pulleys 44. The frame sup porting brackets 41 are connected with the rod 35 connecting the arms or levers 34 by means of braces 45. It will thus be seen that the frame or table C may be regarded as being supported by means of the. springs 37, said table being guided securely in its vertical movement by means of. the grooved wheels 39 upon the plate 40, saidgrooved wheels or pulleys engaging the guide flange 38 which constitutes a part of the frame structure.
The side members or bars 42 ofthe frame C are rounded or of circular cross section to constitute tracks for a slide or carriage D which in its construction includeswcross bars 46, one of which is suitably connected with an endless flexible element 47 which is guided over the pulleys or guide members 44 and wound one or more times about the drum 32. It is obvious that when the drum is rotated, the carriage will be moved along mitted from the main shaft 5 to the shaft.

The worm 31 upon the counter shaft 4 meshes with and rotates the worm gear 30 upon the shaft 29 carrying the drum 32, whereby motion will be imparted to the slide or carriage D which will thus move in one direction until one of thestop members 52 engages the arm 21 of the bell crank B which is extended in the path of said stops, thus shifting the position of the bell crank lever and of the: clutch, thereby reversing the direction of rotation of the counter shaft 4 and consequently the direction of ment, when the arm 21 of the bell crank will again be engaged by a stop member 52, thereby throwing the clutch and reversing the direction of movement.
The carriage D includes a shaft 53 suitably supported in bearings 54 upon said carriage, said shaft having an operating lever or arm 55 adapted to engage a curved ratchet bar 56, whereby it may be retained in adjusted position. The shaft 53 is provided with terminal cranks 57 supporting one edge of a supporting plate 58, the free edge of which is slidably supported upon lugs 59 extending upwardly from the carriage. The supporting plate 58 is equipped with a clamping device (30 including a set screw 61 whereby a plow share 62 that is to be operated upon may be safely supported in suitable position for operation. It will be readily seen that the supporting plate and the clamping device are disposed in proximity to the emery wheel 24 and that, by adjusting the supporting plate 58 by means of the crank shaft 53, the edge of the plow share to be operated upon may be, presented at different angles so that it may be ground with the desired bevel. The frame or table C which supports the slide Or carriage is in turn supported by the springs 37 which obviously serve to hold the work to. the emery wheel with a con siderable degree of tension. Suitable means of any well'known description may be provided for modifying the degree of tension with which the object to be operated upon is held against the emery stone. A stop member 63 consisting of a suitably supported setscrew is disposed in the path of the plate 40, thus limiting the movement of the spring supported or floating work carrying device in the direction of the emery wheel, thereby positively preventing unnecessary and wasteful grinding, assuming the stop member to have been properly adjusted before the beginning of the operation.
' From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto an nexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it apper tains.
It will be seen that a simple machine has been provided whicheis not liable to get out of order under ordinary circumstances and which may be driven from power derived from any suitable source. After placing the work in position upon the machine, adjusting the stop member 63, the stops 52 and the crank shaft 53 and starting the machine, the same may be permitted to run without further attention on the part of the opera tor until the work has been finished. Should the operator not be on hand to stop the machine at the proper moment no harm will be done because the stop member 63 I will prevent the plow share or other object from being further operated upon by the emery wheel after the said stop 63 is en countered by the plate 40.
The machine may be manufactured and placed upon the market at a moderate expense which will be within the means of blacksmiths and others running small repair shops and enabling such workers to undertake work which cannot be conveniently handled or well performed manually.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:-
1. In a machine of the character described, an upright shaft carrying a drum, means for driving said shaft and for reversing the direction of rotation, a vertically movable spring supported table, a carriage slidable upon said table, and a flexible element connecting the carriage with the drumupon the upright shaft.
2. In a machine of the character described, a frame having a platform, an upright approximately vertical shaft supported for rotation and having a drum adjacent to its upper. end, means for driving said shaft and for reversing the direction of rotation, a. resiliently supported table, a carriage slidable upon the latter, a suitably guided endless flexible element wound upon the drum and connected with the carriage, and a grinding element supported for rotation above and adjacent to the carriage. a
3. In a machine of the character described, a resiliently supported table, a carriage supported for reciprocation upon the table, stop members adjustably connected with the carriage, a shaft having a drum, a suitably guided flexible element wound upon the drum and connected with the carriage, means for driving the shaft, and means for reversing the direct-ion of rotation including a bell crank having one arm extended in the path of the stops connected with the carriage.
4. In a machine of the character described, a'resiliently supported table, a carriage supported for reciprocation upon the table, a shaft having a drum, a suitably guided flexible element wound upon the drum and connected with the carriage, an apron depending from the carriage and having a longitudinal slot with notches in the lower edge thereof, stop members adjustable in said notches, means for driving the drum carrying shaft, and means for reversing the direction of rotation including a bell crank having an arm extended in the path of the stop members.
5. In a machine of the character de scribed, a frame including guide flanges, a vertically movable plate having grooved wheels engaging the guide flanges, pivotally supported arms, a cross bar connecting the same, bracket members upon the vertically movable plate, braces connecting the brackets with the cross bar connecting the pivoted arms, springs connecting the arms with the frame to resiliently support said arms and related parts, a table supported upon the bracket members, a carriage mounted for reciprocation upon the table, means for imparting reciprocatory motion to the carriage, work-holding means upon the carriage, and a grinding element supported for rotation in proximity to the carriage.
6. In a machine of the character described, a resiliently supported table, a carriage supported for reciprocation thereon, a crank shaft supported for oscillation upon the carriage and having an operating arm, means for retaining the arm at various adjustments, suitably supported members connected pivotally with the cranks of the oscillatory shaft, work holding means upon said members, a grinding element supported for rotation in proximity to the carriage, and means for imparting reciprocatory movement to the carriage.
