WALTER F. HUNTER, OF BROOKFIELD, MISSOURI.
VERTICALLY-ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
Original application filed September 21, 1908, Serial No. 453,942.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER F. HUNTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookfield, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful lmprovemei'its in Vertically-Adjustable Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to builders hardware, and more particularly to hinges, and has for its object to provide a hinge of simple construction adapted readily for adj ustment to shift an engaged door vertically, without necessity for detaching the hinge from the frame or the door.
A particular object of the invention is to provide an adjusting means of extremely simple design, adapted to be manufactured at a minimum cost from stock material.
The present application is a division from the original-Patent 928,760, granted to the present applicant, July 20, 1909.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, and that any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the hinge in normal position, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the supporting member, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the movable leaf raised. Fig. t is a modified form of the adjusting nut member.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a hinge 10 of usual form, comprising two leaves having intermeshed knuckles 11 and 11 provided with registering passages in which there is slidably engaged a suitable pintle 13. It will be noted that the spaces between the knuckles are sulficient to allow relative reciprocation of the knuckle longitudinally of the pintle. The pintle is threaded at its lower end as shown at 1 1-, and is provided with a slotted head 15. A nut member 10, having a flat side is mounted to move vertically on the pintle and engage with its flat side against the edge on one of Specification of Letters Patent.

the leaves. A modified form of the nut member 10"is engaged on the threaded portion of the pintle between certain of the knuckles, and is provided with a lateral extension having an open ended slot 17 therein receiving slidably therein the adjacent edge of one of the leaves, and it will be noted that the leaf so engaged carries a knuckle disposed beneath the nut. It will be apparent that the slot will prevent rotation of the nut. Thus when the pintle is rotated, the nut will be operated longitudinally thereof, and the leaf supported thereon adjusted vertically with respect to the opposite one.
It will be understood that the hinge may be provided with as many or as few knuckles as desired, and the shape of the nut varied within the scope of the claims to adapt it for use under various conditions and with different forms of hinges.
The pintle 13 projects below the knuckles, and carries a nut 18 thereon which may be tightened to hold the parts securely in adjusted position. and which is adapted to 1'0- tate with said pintle. The nut clamps against the lower knuckle 11, and the head of the pintle being supported upon the upper ear 11, the pintle is secured against rela tive movement.
hat is claimed is 1. The combination with a hinge comprising a pair of leaves having knuckles thereon adapted to intermesh, of a threaded pintle passing vertically through the intermeshed knuckles and freely rotatable there in, the lower end of the pintle projecting beyond the lowermost knuckle and having a cap screwed thereon, adapted to hold said pintle in binding contact with one of said leaves, the upper end of said pintle being provided with a screw head by means of which said pintle is rotated, and a nut on the pintle provided with a lateral bifurcated extension adapted to straddle and slidably engage one leaf of the hinge, whereby upon rotation of the pintle the nut will move upwardly or downwardly on said pintle. to raise or lower the opposite leaf of the hinge.
2. In combination with a hinge comprising a pair of leaves having intermeshed knuckles, of a threaded pintle extending vertically through the knuckles, a nut threadedly mounted on the pintle and engaging the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, knuckle of one of said leaves to support said in presence of two witnesses. leaf, said nut being provided with a lateral W ALTER F HUNTER extension slidably engaging one leaf of the hinge, and means for rotating the pintle to Witnesses:
cause the vertical movement of said nut on A. W. BAKER, said pintle. I NORMAN DAY.
