ELECTRIC CUT-OFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented aan. si, ieu.
Application filed April 29, 1910. Serialio. 558,425.
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that we, WILLrAM NELsoN STURGEON and HENRY RICHARD SHANLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new .and useful Improvements in Electric Cut-Offs, of which the following is a specification.
`This invention has reference to electric light cut-oifs and is designed particularly to construct a cut-olf wherein the snap may be eliminated so that damage of the fiber of the lamp will be reduced.
Wit-h the' above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure Iis a central longitudinal section of a ylamp socket illustrating the construction of the switch mechanism therein; F ig,
. 2 is a yfront elevation of the switch yoke,
illustrating 'the position of the elements thereof when the current is shut oil".
In carrying out the present invention the key is mounted in a bearing yoke so that the inner terminal thereof is slidably mounted in a slot in said yoke and carries the switch block adjacent to the slot inthe yoke. A
vcoiled spring is' interposed between the base of the yoke and the shaft of the switch so that the same will exert a pull and pressure upon the shank due to the various positions ofthe block.
' Referring more particularly to the drawl ings the outer shell l0, the cap li., and the linings l2 and 13, of the socket are of stand ard construction and are therefore not described in the present specification. An in sulated baise 14- is mounted inthe shell 10 and is provided with a central orifice l5 through which extends ascrew lo engaging the base of the bearing yoke 17.,
In one side of the bearing yoke 17 is constructed a slot 18 in which the inner termi- A with the key 20.
nal of the switch shaft 19 reciprocates, the outer terminal of said switch shaft projecting through the opposite side of the `,bearing yoke and the shell 10 where it is provided A switch block 21 is mounted on the shank 19 adjacent the inner terminal thereof and the slot in the bearing yoke, said switch block adapted'to create a contact in the usual manner.
The base of the bearing yoke is pierced by a pair of openings in which one terminalof the coiled spring 23 is securely fastened, the opposite terminal of the coiled spring being snugly wound about the key shank 19,`
therefrom having a slot formed in one arm thereof, and a pair of openings in the base thereof, a key shaft operating in said yoke, one terminal thereof reciprocating in said slot, and a coiled spring having one terminal thereof secured in said openings and the other wound snugly about the key shank.
2. In a lamp socket, the combination with a lamp contact, of a bearing yoke insulated therefrom, a. key shaftoperating in said yoke, and a coiled spring having one terminal thereof centrally secured to the basek of said yoke, and the opposite terminal secured to the shaft adapted to insure a contact and eliminate the snap upon the rotation of the key shaft,
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM NELSON STURGEON. HENRY RICHARD SHNLEY.
