To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-I, JOHN B. DRUMM, a States, residing at VVinslow,inthe county of Navajo, State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Electric-Light-Extension Devices; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an electric. light It is the object of my invention to simplify and otherwise improve the structure, and to increase the efficiency of devices of this character and it is more particularly my object to provide a compact drum mountthese connections mg wherein connections between service wires and wires wound on the drum are maintained upon rotation of the drum, and wherein the contacts employed in effecting are completely housed.
With the above objects in view such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim. 7
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation ofmy device, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof,
Fig. 3, a section on" line 3+3 of F ig. 1, and
Fig. 4, a section on line4-4t of Fig. 7. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5- 5 of Fig. 7. Fig. 6 is a section on line 66 ofFig. 7 Fig. is an enlarged sectional view through the winding drum, and
I Fig. 8 is abottom planview of the uppermost contacting disk.
eferring to the drawing by reference characters wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views: i My devicecomprises a U-shaped bracket 1 which is adapted to be secured to the ceiling of a room. On the bight portion of this U-shaped bracket is mounted a contact disk 2 which is rigidly secured in place on a hub 3 which extends through a hole in the said bight portion and binds on the edges thereof.
The rosette 4 from which the current is transmitted to the device is secured to the the first mentioned disk.

ceiling between the legs of the U-shaped member 1 and the wires 5 from the said rosette are attached to the disk 2 at diametrically opposite points in a manner which will now be described;
The disk 2 is of cup-shape and is made of suitable metal of which the conductivity is high. The interior of this disk 2 is alined with insulating material 6 and mounted within the said disk are alternate rings of metal and insulation indicated by the reference characters 7 and 8, respectively. One of the wires 5 is connected to the outermost metallic ring 7 while the other wire 5 is connected to the innermost ring 7, the said wires being extended through holes in the disk 2 and the outer insulating ring 8.
A revoluble disk 9 is mounted on the first mentioned disk and the under face of the said disk contacts with the upper face of The construction of this disk is similar to the construction of the disk 2 inasmuch as it has corresponding rings of metal and insulating material, the metal rings contacting with the metal rings on the disk 2.
In order that there may be a of contacting surface between the rings on the disk 2 and the disk 9, I have provided grooves 10 in the rings 7 on the disk 2, while on the metallic rings of the disks 9, I have provided tongues 11 which fit into the grooves 10 on the first mentioned rings and thus not only providing greater contacting so insure a positive contact.
A downwardly extending sleeve 12. projects through ahole in the disk 2 and the hub 3 and has a longitudinally extending hole therethrough which terminates at its lower end in openings 13 located at diametrically opposite points on the said sleeve.
A wire 14 is connected to the innermost ring of the disk 9 and extends downwardly through the hole 12 in the sleeve 12 and thence outwardly through one of the openings l3 and asecond wire 15 is connected to the outermost metallic ring of the disk 9 and likewise extends downwardly through the hole in the sleeve 12 and out of the other opening 13.
Fixedly connected to the lower end of the sleevel2 is an inverted U-shaped bracket 16 which is made of any desirable spring metal. Rotatably mounted between the legs of the U-shaped member 16 on axle 17 is a drum 19 and 18. Secured the ends of the legs of the U-shaped member 16 are disks 19 which have. holes therethrough registering with the holes in the adjacent legs, through which holes the axle 17 passes.
These disks 19 are composed'ofouter rings 20 and inner rings 21 which are insulatedfrom each other by: an insulating ring 22 of suitable material. The inner ring 21 has an lnwardly pro]ect1ng shank 21 whlch contactswlth the mner face of 23011 the other hub inasmuch asthering and'the ring 21 on the disk lb'arealways in contact with each other.
To eachofi the r ngs is connected. a avire 26 which passes through the adjacent flange or the drum 18v and is connected between the flanges to one wire of is adapted to when it is desirable to extend. the lightto a distant point. r l
' These disks 19 are insulated from thelegs of the U-shaped bracket 16 by a; sheet of inica 28 or any other suitable insulating material.
'lfhe wires in thecord 27. are. connected to a lamp socket 29 which is supported. on a suitable stand 30, the said stand having. thumb-shaped rubber suction pads 81. on the lower ends llllBlTGQf so that the stand: ma be supported" in a horizontal position by ali ou ing these suction pads 31 to clamp upon a mirror 1 or other. smooth surface.
Thus it may be. seen that the current is carried through one of the wires 5 from the rosette 1 to the ring 7 of. the disk 2 disks 2 and 9 to the wine 1 1. through which the current iscarried to one of the disks 19 and thence to one of the wires of the double wire Cords 28 The current is then carried through the lamp and back to'the other disk thence through the disks 2 and 9, being. conduct'edby the proper rings therein, and again through the other wire 5 back to the source.
When it is desirable to carrythe lamp on the stand to a point remote from the sup porting device it is only necessary to grasp Gop ijes of patent may be ohtainec} for five. cents each, by addressing the;

adouble. wire cord 27,
which cord. is adapted to be wound: upon the drum when the light is not used, but which be unwound from the drum and is then carried through the contacting of the disks 19 contact with the rings 21 on the said drum. there are no wire connections between the movable drum and the bracket 16 and consequently there will be no tendency of these wires becoming broken. The lamp maybe also moved about a circle with the sleeve 12 as a pivot andwith this motion there will be no tendency tobneak the wires as the disks-2 and there is no. positive wire connection. between any of the movable parts and the stationary parts. a i a In order that the cord 28 may be automatidruin 18 when the lamp is released, I have provided, inthe said drum: a plurality of diametrically opposite as c ntact an 3 slot-sin which are slidable mounted gravity actuated pawls 32 which are adapted to ensage 111 a l l lml Sl 15111 33161 to maintain the said drum 1n anyct ts phira lity of positions, but which when the drum is rapidly rotated. will fly outwardly against the periphery oil the drum by .centriiiugal force and. will. therefore allow the drum. to; rotate on the axle.
