LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1911.
Application filed October 12. 1910. SeriatNo. 586,724.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PETER Torn, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Vintondale, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to looks, and the objects of the invention are to furnish a lock with a bolt that requires two keys to shift the same, and to provide double key lock that. cannot. be very readily opened exceptby a person familiar with the same.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter spa citically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, where-- Figure 1 is an elevation of the lock with the front plate thereof removed, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the lock, Fig. 3 -,is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of a portion of the locking bolt, and Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of keys OlllPlOYtCl for manipulating the lock.
The lock comprises a rectangular casing having a front plate 1. a rear plate 2, top and bottom walls 3 and side walls et-and 5. The rear plate 2 is connected to thefront plate 1 by screws (5 or other fastening means.
The side wall 5 has an opening 7 to acconnnodate the outer end of a locking bolt- 8, the opposite end of said bolt is simply mounted in a bracket 9, carried by the front plate 1 adjacent to the side Wall 4., The
- locking bolt 8 is rectangular in cross section and the lower side thereof adjacent to the outer end is provided with two sets of teeth 1Q and 11. the teeth 10 being arranged at one edge of said bolt and the teeth 11 at the op posite edge, with said teeth the reverse of the teeth 10. The upper side of the bolt 8 intermediate the-ends thereof is provided with a transverse slot 122. v
The top and bottom walls 3 are connected by a guide 13 and arranged in parallelism with this guide is another guide 11 of a less length than the guide 13. These guides are provided. with alining openings 15 for the bolt S, and slidably mounted between said guides and against the rear plate 2 is a latch 16 having one side thereof cut away ito provide a recess 1? through which the bolt .8 extends. The lower end of the latch 16 is beveled, as at 18 and interposed between the upper end of said latch and the top wall 3 is a coiled compression spring, 15) adapted to normally hold the upper wall of the recess 17 of the latch in the transverse slot- 12 of the bolt 8.
The rear plate 2 is provided with an in- --verted keyl'iole 20 in' which is placed the shank 2-1 of a key 522, said shank having radially disposed teeth and 21, these teeth being: beveled in opposite directions to enpage the teeth 1.0 and 11 and shift the bolt 8. The rear plate 2 is provided with another keyhole 25 in which is placed the shank 26 of a key 27, said shank having a radially disposed lap; 28, which is recessed at the end thereof, as at 29 to engage the lower beveled end of the latch 16. The key 27 must be used first to elevate the latch 16 before the key 22 can be turned to move the bolt 8 in either direction.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I have devised a simple and inexpensive lock that requires two specially constructed keys to manipulate the same, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred cmbodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are snsceptibleto such changes as fall witln in the scope of the appended claim.
\Vhat I claim is A look comprising a casing, a locking rows of reversely arranged teeth, a key ,adapted to be inserted in said casing to engage said teeth and shift said bolt, a latch slidablymounted in said casing and adapted to engage the outer side of saidbolt and hold said latch, a kefadapted to be inserted in said casing to engage the lower end of said latch and elevate the same to release said bolt. and means arranged in said 'asing and adapted to normally hold said latch in engagement with said bolt.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence ot'two witnesses.
