FASTENING- DEVICE FOR DOORS, WINDOWS, AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROCK-I RANDON, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 5 Rue du Grand Moulin, St. Etienne, Loire, in the Republic of France, ironmongcr, have invented certain new and useful 11nprovemerits in liastening Devices for Doors, Vindows, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window fastenings and has for its object to construct a device of this character having a fastening rod the ends of which are reduced in such a manner that an eccentric elliptic pin is formed in each of the said ends which engages in a keeper of peculiar construction comprising; a fixed casing and a slatted block revolving or turning within the said casing.
The characteristic arrangements of such window fastening are disclosed in the accompanying drawings showing one embodiment of this invention, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the window fastening; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, with the lower part of the fastening shown in vertical section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower keeper, showing in sec tion and in the closed position the fastening rod engaged therein; and Fig. t is a plan view of the keeper the revolving block being shown in its open position.
The fastening rod is circular in cross section and each of its ends is reduced in such a manner as to form a pin 2 elliptic in cross section, of which the smaller axis coincides with a radius of the circular'section of the rod; such section may also be semi-circular. Such rod is guided in the usual manner on one of the folding frames of the window and can also be operated as usual by means of a handle 3 mounted on a stud l which is secured in a square block integral with the fastening rod; such mounting comprises a novelty in that, in order to diminish the strain on the stud l, the block 5 is provided with a cylindrical stud 6 on which is fitted the hollow head 7 of the handle. Each end of the fastening rod is engaged in a keeper secured to the window frame.
The keeper comprises a casing 8 with a lid 9 and a cylindrical block 10 revolving or turning in the said casing. Such members are so slotted as to permit the passage of the fastening rod when the latter is turned 90 in the direction shown by the arrow in Fig.

3, the block 10 then occupying the position shown in Fig. 4. Such block is of cylindrical shape with av reduced part 11 which engages in a circular opening in the bottom of the casing, and with a lateral projection or rib 12 which bears against the inner face of the lid 9; such projection also limits the rotation of the block in impinging against the front al lof the casing.
The slot made in the block is open at the periphery of the latter to be enabled to register with the slot of the casing; it comprises two superposed parts separated by a step 13; the upper part is of a width correspending to that of the rod 1 and it is eccentric with regard to the center of the block; the lower part is of a less width corresponding to the thickness of the pin 2 and is arranged in such a manner that the step 13 lies near the center of the block, as clearly shown in the drawings.
It will be seen by Fig. 3 that when the fastening rod is turned or revolved, the pin 52, engages in the narrow part of the slot in the block, causes the latter to turn also, and the eccentricity of the wider part, that is to say of the rod, with regard to the center of the block, has then the effect of causing the center of the rod to move in the are of a circle around the motionless center of the block. Such slight movement of the rod is directed nearly poi-pendieularly to the plane of the window and has the ellect of bringing the folding frame a little nearer to or farther from the plane of the fixed frame, by producing extending or retracting ac tions which facilitate the nice opening or closing of the window. It will be seen, furthermore that when the block is revolved or turned as shown in Fig. 3, the slot of the casing is completely obstructed and the fastening rod is firmly held by the block which then bears by its ends on the bottom of the casing and on the lid, and contingently also on the sides of the slot in the casing.
Between the bottom of the casing and the shoulder of the block a steel washer la or other similar resilient member may be interposed to produce friction on the block and prevent the same from turning too easily in the casing.
The lid 9 is secured to the casing by screws; to remove the block 10, the lid has only to be taken off. The casing itself is secured by SCIPWS to the frame of the window.
WVhile the window fastener according to this invention is more particularly designed for use in the closing of Windows, it is to be understood that it may, within the scope of this invention, be applied to the closing of the doors of pieces of furniture, of parts of any kind of buildings, and the like, by modifying as required the forms and structural arrangements of the handle, steeples, and the like.
Claims:
1. A window fastening comprising a fastening rod the ends of which are reduced eccentrically, means for revolving the said rod, recessed cylindrical blocks for receiving the said ends and casings for inclosing the said blocks, said blocks being revolubly mounted in said casings, each casing having a lateral stepped slot for the entrance of one end of the rod, and the corresponding block having a stepped recess one part of which is adapted to receive a non-reduced portion of the rod.
2. A window fastening comprising a fas tening rod, the ends of which are reduced eccentrically, means for revolving said rod, recessed cylindrical blocks for receiving said ends, each block having a reduced portion forming a journal. and provided with a lateral projection, and casings for inclosing said blocks, each casing having a lateral slot for the entrance of one end of said rod and provided with a circular opening in its bottom to receive the reduced portion of the block and with a similar opening in its top to receive the block.
3. A window fastening comprising a fastening rod the ends of which are reduced eecentrically means for revolving the said rod, cylindrical blocks each having a recess to receive one of the said rod ends, and casings to inclose the said blocks, each casing having a lateral opening for the entrance of one end of the rod, and the recess of the block being enlarged atone side to receive a non-reduced part of the fastening rod, the axis of such portion being at a distance from the axis of the block, and another portion open on the side of the block to receive the reduced portion of the said rod, the axis of such portion being at a greater distance from the axis of the block, both the said portions thus forming a step at about the middle of the block, substantially as described.
