COTTON-STALK CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1910. Serial No. 563,719.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, For A. LEATHER- wooo and CHARLES F. Lnrrnnnwoon, citizens of the United States, residing at Victoria, in the county of Victoria and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Stalk Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to corn or cotton cutters and is designed particularly as an implement of this nature, the height of each side of which may be adjusted as desired and which will operate readily upon two rows of corn or cotton.
lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a transverse section of the present invention, parts thereof broken away; Fi 2 is an outside elevation of the end of the supporting bar illustrating the quadrants carried at each terminal thereof; Fig. 3 an inside ele ation of one of the levers which adjusts the height of the machine; Fig. 1 a fragmentary top plan view of the supporting beam.
The present invention resides in the provision of a rectangular hollow supporting bar having rotatably mounted therein at each extremity thereof an angular axle carrying a wheel, said axle being provided with levers carried thereby which cooperate with quadrants at the terminals of said supporting bar. The supporting bar is provided with a pair of longitudinally cxtending arms at the rear terminals of which are carried the cutting knives while at the forward terminals thereof are mounted the draft mechanisms.
Reference being had to the drawings 10 indicates a rectangular hollow supporting bar or beam which has at each terminal and on the upper side thereof the toothed quadrant 11, and on the lower side directly under said toothed quadrant a plain segment 12, said toothed quadrant and plain segment being provided with angular bent plate portions 13 adapted to rest flush with the beam 10 through which the bolts 1 1 pass thereby rigidly clamping said quadrant segment to the beam 10. A seat A of any usual construction is centrally mounted on the beam 10.
Each axle comprises a vertical portion 15 provided at each terminal with a horizontal portion 16, the inner of said horizontal portions is.rotatably mounted in one terminal of the beam 10 while the outer horizontal portions have rotatably mounted thereon the wheels 17. A lever 18 is mounted on the inner horizontal portion 16 of each axle and is rigidly secured by the clamp 19 to the vertical portion 15, and has adjacent the quadrant 1.1 an inwardly extending bracket 20 which spans said quadrant and has its lower terminal bent upwardly at 91. to engage the segment 12. A spring operative pawl 22 operated by the link 23 projects through the bracket 20 and engages the teeth of the quadrant 1.1.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that by operating the lovers 18 the wheels 17 may be adjusted independently.
A pair of arms 24 are mounted on the beam 10, the rear terminals of which are adapted to carry implements such as may be desired.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by United States Letters Patent is:
1. 'In a device of the class described, the combimition with a supporting beam, of angularly bent axles mounted therein, a quadrant and a segment carried on opposite sides of said beam at each extremity thereof, and levers secured to said angularly bent axles adapted to engage said quadrants and segments thereby retaining said axles in various positions.
2. Tn a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting beam, of angularly bent axles mounted therein, wheels rotatably mounted on said axles, a segment carried on the under side of each terminal of said beam, a quadrant disposed above each segment, a lever rigidly secured to the angularly bent portion of each axle, means whereby said levers may engage said segments, and pawls carried by said levers adapted to cooperate with said quadrants.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting beam, of angularly bent axles mounted therein, wheels rotatably mounted on said axles, a segment carried on the under side of each terminal of said beam, a toothed quadrant disposed above each segment, a lever rigidly secured to the angularly bent portion of each axle, an inwardly and angularly bent portion at the lower terminal of each lever adapted to engage one of said segments, and spring actuated paWls carried by said levers adapted to engage the teeth of said quadrant.
