To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that LMARIETTA MGM. Anno'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVIurfreesboro, in the county of Rutherford and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Pillow-Holders and Body-Props, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in pillow holders and body props and has particular reference to a body prop adapted to be positioned upon the bed to support an occupant of the latter in a sitting position.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a prop to be adjustably secured at various angles relative to the horizontal plane of the bed so that the body of the user may be supported in vertical and inclined positions.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a prop having means for supporting a plurality of pillows thereon.

With these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereina't'ter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion size and minor details oi the device may be made within the scope ot the appended claims, without departing from the spirit. or sacrificing any ot the advantages oi the invention.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification :Figure 1. is a perspective view of the device showing its application to a bed. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of one corner of the back support. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the upper end portion of the device. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a modified form of the device. Fig.5 is a side elevation thereof.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.

In the form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive the device includes a supporting frame. This member is preferably formed of stout steel wire or its equivalent and comprises opposite side portions, said side portions being substantially right angular in contour and arranged in spaced relation.

The free ends of the horizontal portions of the sides terminate in eyes 10.

The adjustable back comprises a frame preie ably formed of a single piece of wire and bent into substantially an inverted U- shape, the opposite limbs 11 and 1'2 of which diverge from the connecting portion 13. The lower ends of the limbs 13 terminate in outwardly and u nvardly curved portions H to provide holders and connecting the bases of the said holders is an arcuate shaped cross piece 15. l ormcd at the juncture of the bases of the holders and opposite ends of the cross piece 15 are eyes 16, which are in axial alinement with the eyes 10 oi. the frame, these alining eves receiving pivot pins 17. Connection between the connecting portion 13 and arcuate shaped cross piece 15 is established by means of a pluralit of strips 18. the said strips being of cane or its equivalent. It might here he stated that the length oi? the hack frame is a trillo greater than the lengths of the vertical portions ll of the supporting 'lil'illllC so that when the back frame is moved rearwardly its upper end will bear on the upper cross piece 7 of the supporting frame.

In order that the back may be adjustably secured at various angles to the vertical side portions (3 of the supporting f ame a keeper is provided and preferably formed of stout steel wire or its equivalent. This keeper is designated by the numeral 19 and has one end pivoted to the upper end of the back. and is provided between its pivoted and free ends with a plurality of extensions 20, the outer sides of which are adapted to indepeiidently bear on the upper cross piece 7 of the supporting frame, and when so bearing will prevent movement of the back in one direction.

It will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, that the medial portions of the limbs 11 and 12 of the back are provided with outwardly curved holders 21. The holders l4 and 21. engage with the opposite end portions of one side of an ordinary pillow, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and serve to hold the said pillow.

In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 4, a right angularly shaped supporting frame 1s shown comprlsing side members 22 and 23, the upper ends of the vertical portions of said side members being connected by a cross piece 24, a similar cross piece 25 also connecting the lower ends of the vertical portions of the sides. The free ends of the horizontal portions of the side members 22 and 23 terminate in eyes 26.

The back comprises an inverted U-shaped frame, the opposite limbs of which are designated by the numerals 27 and 2S and the cross piece connecting said limbs by the numeral 29. The lower and intermediate portions of the limbs 27 and 28 are provided with upwardly curved holders 30 and 31 and connecting the base portions of the lowerholders 30 is an arcuate shaped cross piece 32. Formed at the juncture between the base of the lower holders 30 and the opposite end of the arcuate shaped cross piece 32 are eyes 33 which aline with the eyes 26 of the supporting frame, these eyes receiving pivot pins 34.

A substantially U-shaped keeper is ar ranged on the supporting frame, the opposite limbs of said keeper being designated by the numeral 35, and the cross piece connecting said limbs by the numeral 36. Formed at the juncture between the opposite ends of the cross piece and limbs 35 are eyes 27 which receive the vertical portions of the side members 22 and 23. The free end portions of the limbs 35 terminate in downwardly curved hooks 38. The limbs 27 and 28 of the back are provided between the holders 30 and 31 and also between the upper holders 31 and upper end portions of the limbs with eyes 39 and 40, the eyes 39 and 40 independently receiving the hooks of the keeper. It will be manifest whenthe lower side of the eyes 39 receive the said hooks 33 the back will be supported at a dif-- ferent inclination than when the eyes 40 receive the said hooks.

Thus it will be seen that either form of the device may be employed to support the back of the person in inclined and vertical positions, and it will be further apparent that the device is extremely simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and may be employed in most forms of beds now in use.

Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is 1. In a body prop the combination with a right angularly shaped supporting frame including spaced side members; of a back having spaced side members pivotally secured at one end to the horizontal portions of the said side members of the supporting frame and a plurality of oppositely positioned forwardly and upwardly curved holders arranged on the side portions of said back.

2. In a body prop the combination with supporting frame, of a back having one end pivotally secured to the supporting frame and provided with oppositely disposed and forwardly and upwardly curved holders.

3. In a body prop the combination with a right angularly shaped supporting frame including spaced side members; of a back having spaced side members pivotally secured at one end to the horizontal portions of the said side members of the supporting frame, a plurality of oppositely positioned forwardly and upwardly curved holders arranged on the side portions of said back, and means for adjustably securing the back at various angles to the vertical port-ions of the supporting frame.
