TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 24, 1911.
Application led .Tune 10, 1916. Serial No. 566,207.
To all 'whom it may concern: p
Be it known that we, vJosEr F. MELoUN and MARTIN MCCUNE, citizens of the United States; residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco pipes, andhas for its object to provide improved means whereby tobacco in the pipe bowl may be stirred up or loosened when it becomes packed, so thatthe pipe will draw well.
The invention also provides means. for
4supporting tobacco above the bottom of the bowl, whereby a space is formed in which nicotin can collect.
' The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a sectional View of a pipe provided therewith.
`Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 indicates the pipe which is provided in its bottom with an outer bore o r recess 2 at the lower end of a smaller borey in which a rod or stem 4 works. A coiled? spring 3 is confined in the recess 2 between the top thereof and a nut 6 fixed on the lower end of the rod 4, which nut may be pushed up intothe recess. The upper end of the rod 4 projects into the bowl of the pipe and is provided therein with a plate 8 which forms a fallse T e smoke passage inthe stem opens into the -below the plate 8, and the bowl is cut away or recessed as indicated at 10V to form a space under said plate for the collection of nicotin. The diameter of the plate 8 is 'slightly less than that of the bowl, so that a, space is formed around said plate through which sloke may be drawn. The plate may have a number of pointed proraising and loosening the same, and if necessary the nut can be turned to rotate the plate, when the projecting points 9 will assist the action. The tobacco rests upon the plate 8 and does not drop into the space 10, which, however, serves to collect the oil which can be poured out when necessary. By the, means described a clean and easily drawing pipe is assured. When the tobacco is all consumed the ashes can be loosened in the same manner as above described, and readily dislodged from the pipe.
y Having thus described the invention, what we 'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A pipe provided with a bottom plate movable up and down in the bowl thereof, the edge lof said side of the bowl to form a smoke passage, the bottom of said bowl beiner recessed under the plate, and the bore of: the pipe-stem opemng into said recess below said plate, and a rod attached to the plate and-extending through the bottom of 'the bowl and rotatable and movable up and down therein, and a spring connected to the rod and pressing the same downwardly to hold the plate to the bottom of the bowl.
, .I'n testimony whereof, we-do affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
