Laim Paten: No. 98,231, lated Damm 28,1869,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of che sama.
To all whom it mrtg/'concern Be it known that I, GIDEON W. COLE, ot Canton, in the county of Fulton, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Planing- '.ldachines; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the constrnc tion and operation of th`c same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partyot this specification, in whioh 1 f Figure 1 is a perspective view. y Figure 2 is a view ofthe underside of the machine,
.showing parts not exhibited in fig. 1.
This invention relates to certain improvements in planing-machines,:and consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of a tilting or oscillating top, which is provided wit-h an l:uljustable section, as will be fully described hereafter.v
A, in ig.1, is the oscillating top-bed, held in a horizont-al position by means of springs and rods underneath, as hereinattermore fully described.
B, in tig. 1, is; a section of the top-bed, held in its place by a spring, l, in tig. 2, and regulated by thumbserews J J J, to cut any thickness of shaving required.
C, in fig. l, is an adjustable guide, for planing-square or bevel edges.
D'D are used to make the top-bed stationary, if desired, by means of thumb-screws E E, in lig. l.
F F are the side frames.
G, in iig. l, is the boxing, through which the shaft passes, to which is attached the planer. A
H H, in 2, are projections of the boxing on the inside ofthe frame, on which rests the oscillating topbed. l To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, l will proceed to describe its construetion and operation. I
I construct the frames F Iof iron, placed upon a. suitable ibundation to give it the required height, with circular iron boxing in the centre, through which planer, and projecting inward sufficiently for the top-bed to rest upon.
I constructniy oscillatiugtop-bed of iron, with circular bearin gs, to rest upon the circular boxings above described, with the points extending perpendicular-ly a short distance below the centre ot the boxings, so as to be kept in its proper place-when raised by vsetscrews.
I construct the section of the top-bed B in a separote piece, so it can be raised by the thumb-screws to rcgulate the thickness of the shaving, it being held to its place by a spring andthumb-screw, I, iig. 2. Said spring I make ofiiat steel, and iit the ends into gains in sides of top-bed, and attach it to section B, 'by thumb-screw, in its centre.
I construct a set-screw, N, and a corresponding one on the opposite side, with the points of said screws resting on the top ofthe circula-r boxing, by meansot which the top-bed is adjusted to the planing-bits.
l construct a guide, C, iig. l, of the same length of top-bed, with end-pieces attached thereto, which are pivoted at L, and correspomling pivot at opposite end.
' l construct a slot in end-piece, describing part of the arc of a circle, with pivot Lfor its cent-re, through which passes a screw, M by which the guide is kept in any desired position.
I construct two springs, A1i l, iig. 2, attached to the lower side of frame by a screw in the centre of cach, the ends being curved downward and inward, and connected by rods to the top-bed, by which it is kept in a horizontal position, except as the springs will admit of its oscillating when at work.
Theobjec-t of the oscillating movement of the 'topbed is for the better' accommodation of itself to the work 0i' planing long timber or lumber, so that-if it is not kept peri'ectl y level, the top-bed will play up and do'wn with the piece being planed, and still keepin its relative position with the planing-knives, working in the opening in the centre ofthe to'p-hed.
By the use 'oa rest, a little in advance of themachine, one hand can work it as easily as two hands can with the stationary bed, and do the work muchf better. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f The oscillating top-bed A, having the adjustable section B and slotted side flame D, when all the parts are constructed, arranged, and operated substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
' GIDEON W; COLE.
