Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
Application filed June 16, 1908. Serial No. 438,759.
T 0 all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. HAYWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Chain-Links, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the manufacture of open chain links having a bar at one end and a hook at the opposite end.
The object of my present invention is to provide such a link with attachments whereby certain elements can be securely fastened to the link. These attachments can be made in many different forms depending upon the character of the material to be secured to the link.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1, is a side view of my improved chain link; Fig. 2, is a plan View; Fig. 3, is a plan view showing one form of attachment; Fig. 4:, is a section on the line H, Fig. 3.
A is an open rectangular link in the present instance, having a bar a at one end and side bars a. Each side bar terminates at one end in a hook a and these hooks are spaced apart for the reception of a hooked filler or socket piece D, which has a rearward extension (Z arranged at an incline in respect to the pitch line of the link and has a flattened surface cl perforated at (F. Any bar or other device may be secured to the surface (Z.
Depending from the rear end of the portion d are laterally extending arms d which rest upon the side membersa, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and are attached thereto preferably by electric welding.
The forward end of the hooked filler member D is attached to the hooked portions (4 by electric welding in the present instance.
One side member a is discontinued as shown in Fig. 2 and the side attachment G, illustrated in Figs. 7 and S, is secured to the ends 2', i of the side bar and this attachment is perforated so that a bar or other device may be secured thereto. The attachment C has extensions 0 at each side which are preferably of the same diameter as the ends 2', i of the side bar. This is the preferred form when the parts are electrically welded, as it is desirable to have the two abutting surfaces as near the same diameter as possible.
By this construction it will be seen that I can make a link with any number of attachments, using extensions of parts of elements of the link for the attachments. The attachments may be of different shapes and arranged in diiferent manners without departing from the essential features of the in vention.
In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown a link formed of wire with a hooked filler D.
I claim The combination in a quadrangular link made by bending wire so as to form a transverse bar, side members and hooked sections, of a filler mounted between the hooked sections and welded thereto, said filler extend.- ing at an angle rearwardly above the link and having feet resting upon the side bars, said feet being secured to the side bars by welding.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY E. HAYWARD.
Htnesses J os. H. KLEIN, WM. A. BARR.
