MEANS FOR REGULATING THE COMPENSATION OF TI-IE AXIAL THRUST IN CENTRIF- UGAL PUMPS 0R BLASTS.
Application filed March 29, 1909. Serial N 0. 486,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEiNRIoH ADoLr Thrust in Centrifugal Pumps or Blasts, of
which the following is a specification.
In the known types of centrifugal pumps and blasts provided with the suction conduit at one side only, one has endeavored to re,- duce the axial thrust of the water or air, as the case may be, by perforating-that portion of the back wall of the wheel which is not in contact with the vanes, or by providing special conduit chambers, isolated from the sucking chamber and directed toward the periphery of the wheel in which case slots are provided between the vanes of the wheel. The object ofthe said perforations, or slots, is to provide passages between the.back and front spaces or chambers of the wheel in "order to equalize the pressure of water or air, contained in the said chambers. These 25' openings; however, can not be regulated or adjusted in size and cause disturbances in the water or air conduit, when the water'or air enters orpasses through, the wheell Now the object of the present invention is to provide means in connection with centrifugal pumps, or blasts, which havethe suction conduit or suction opening of the wheel at one side only, by the aid of which the 3'5 axial thrust or pressure upon the backwa-ll of said wheel, can be wholly or partly suspended orregulated at will. In order to obtain this effect, the wheel nave proper is provided with ports, said ports being situated as close to the Wheel axle as possible and connect the space behind the back wall of the wheelwith a circular and oblique space, which is formed by the obliquely cut away front surface of the nave proper and by a box having a correspondingly shaped front face mounted within the casing of the pump or blast. By moving the said wheel more or less toward or from the obliquely out front surface of the said box, the width of the circular space can be altered i. c. regulated. The inclination of the conical surface of the said collar and the front face of the nave has been so chosen as to allow the water passing through the passages of the nave, and that of the suction pipe entering the wheel to mix freely and smoothly without disturbance. By providing the said circular space in front of the nave, an uninterrupted space for the discharge of the liquid or air can be obtained, andhence any hin drances, which cause whirls or such like disturbances, are done away with.
In order that the nature of the invention may be fully and clearly understood, reference is'made to theaccompanying drawing in which a pump or blast .is shown in a partly sectional elevation. Y Now referring to the drawing, W denotes the casing of the pump or blast, S the suction chamber, L the wheel, R the wheel vane, E the admission port. into the wheel, A the exit, G the shaft or axle, O the ports which 'connect the chamber behind the back wall H with the nave front F, which is obliquely cut away as clearly shown. Opposite the said nave front and'mounted in the casing, is a box I), having its face opposite the wheel nave obliquely cut away asshown at G in is provided with an external screw thread,
by the aid of which, it can be fixed within the casing W.
The axle C is continued into a pin V which is mounted in a suitable bearing. This pin is in contact with a lever h which is journaled on to the lower end of-the said bearing as shown at d and is controlled by set screws, 8,8, provided in lugs atthe upper end of the bearing. By moving the lever 72. to the right, or left, the axle G with the wheel will also move to the right or left and hence the width of-the circular space K can be lessened, or increased. 1 a
The compensation of the pressure in centrifugal pumps and blasts, with more wheels 2'. e. the so called high pressure pumps, is effected in the same manner as described above, that is to say by regulating the width of the circular space K- by the aid of suitable means.
. Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A centrifugal pump and blast, compris- Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
ed in said casing, a wheel mounted on said shaft within said casing, and having the front side of its nave obliquely cut off, said shaft having a pin likeprolongation, a. bearing 'in which said pin like prolongationis mounted, a box mounted in said casing around the pin like prolongation, and havpassage being ports connecting said slanting passage with the space at the back of the wheel nave, and means bearing against the end of said 10 pin like prolongation for adjusting the width of the described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my handin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
