To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE Sonoeern, a citizen of Canada, and residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVireStretchers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for stretching wires and more particularly for use in telephone, telegraph and general line wiring and to take the place of the block and tackle or turn-buckle usually used for such purposes and has for its objects to provide a simple, light, economical and practical device of that character which may be readily operated by one man and may be used in places where there is but little space.

With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in certain novel features of construction and operation of parts as hereafter fully described and set forth in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevational view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through A-B in Fig. 1.

Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

The gear case 1, spur gear 2, combined bevel and spur gear 3, bevel gear 5, crank 6, support 7 and screw rods 8 and 9 represent the principal parts of my invention. The screw rods 8 and 9 are threaded nearly their full length and upon screw rod 8 is mounted spur gear 2, and upon screw rod 9 is mounted combined bevel and spur gear 3 and working in connection therewith is bevel gear 5', all of said gears are substantially incased in the gear case 1 which holds them in substantial engagement at all times. The support 7 is a separate piece substantially bolted to said gear case by means of bolts 7 and is provided with another bolt which connects with the gear case 1 and upon which is mounted bevel gear 5, said bevel gear being operated by means of crank 6.

The spur gear 2 and combined bevel and spur gear 3 are internally threaded, adapted to fit the thread on the screw rods 8 and 9. Said spur gear portions being in engagement with each other revolve in opposite directions, thereby causing the screw rods 8 and 9 to move lengthwise in opposite directions to each other. Each of said screw rods is provided on its inner side with slots 8 and 9 nearly their full length and shown by dotted lines. In said slots are provided keys 1 which extend into slots in case 1 for that purpose and are held therein by means of piece 10 which is attached to said gear case by means of screw 10 On each end of said screw rods 8 and 9 are provided hooks pivotally mounted thereon and ofi'set toward the center so the pull will be more direct and to each may be attached an ordinary comealong or anything desired.

It will be readily seen that with this construction and one of the screw rods extending at one end the other extending at the other end, the ends of two wires attached to the extended ends or a post attached to one end and a wire to the other and crank 6 operated, that the wires may be stretched or drawn along easily and conveniently and that the device may be stopped, leaving the wire at any desired tension without looking the device in any manner and that a very powerful strain may be applied to said screw rods by means of the threads in connection with the spur and bevel gear and that the pull is always nearly central.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a wire stretcher the combination of two rods, threaded throughout and provided with hooks on each end, spur gears adapted to screw on said rods and adapted to move said rods in opposite directions to each other, means for operating said spur gears, a casing connecting said means for operating, and means for keeping said rods from turning in said casing, all substantially as set forth.

2. In a wire stretcher the combination of two rods threaded throughout and provided with hooks on each end, a slot extending the full length of said rods, means adapted to said slots for preventing said rods from turning, internally threaded spur and bevel gears mounted on said rods and in engagement therewith adapted to operate one of them lengthwise in one direction and the other in the opposite direction,and a crank in connection with one of said bevel gears for operating the same, all substantially as set forth.

3. In a wire stretcher the combination of a casing,two threaded rods mounted therein,

. hook members mounted on said screw rods,

detachable means for preventing said rods from turning in said case, internally threaded spur and bevel-gear means adapted for operating said rods in opposite directions, another bevel-gear in engagement with the aforementioned bevel-gear, a crank for operating said latter mentioned bevel gear, and

a detachable piece on said case, all substan- 10 tially as set forth.
