Application filed March 13, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. ENSIGN, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Gleatsfor Halyards, Ropes, and Lines, and to be used in all places where it is necessary to fasten or loosen lines or ropes instantly, of which the following is a specification. I
Figure 1 is a perspective and Fig. 2 a crosssection of my cleat The invention is designed as a fastener or cleat for lines upon small crafts, yachts, and vessels wherein it may become necessary to let go instantaneously, and can be used in thousands of other places successfully.
The invention consists of a tapering cylinder, A, firmly attached to a plate, B, which plate is to be fastened with screws upon the place where the lineis intended to be fastened, ihe cylinder being slightly flanged at the top 0. and a tapering slit, D, cut at the lower end, large enough to receive the rope or line intended to be fastened, which has been passed down through the cylinder and drawn into the 25 tapering slit at the bottom, the size of the slit being two-thirds as large as the rope used, so as to take a bite on the rope or line of two of the strands or threads.
