Description

15,11. BARTLETT & W. F. J. L'UTZ.
WATER CLOSET BEND. APP-LIOATION 11.21) MAR, 28. 1910'.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY D. BARTLETT AND WILLIAM F. J. LUTZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATER-CLOSET BEND.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY D. BARTLETT and WILLIAM F. J. LUTZ, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVater-Closet Bends, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of water closet bend, provided with an adjustable flange adapted to be readily raised and lowered to suit varying conditions; and to provide a device of this kind which avoids the necessity of outside calking and which may be readily adjusted through the inside of the flange.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation partly broken away of a closet bend constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 indicate successive steps in the assembling of the joint.
In the construction shown, the main body 1 of the bend is of usual construction, but is provided with an internally threaded hub 2, said hub being of larger diameter than the body part, and there is an annular shoulder providing a seat 3 for a. gasket or packing ring 4:. A nipple 5, threaded on its exterior to fit the hub 2 and also threaded on its interior, forms an adjustable extension of the bend and carries on its upper end a flange 6 adapted for attachment to the closet bowl. An inner part or ring 7, having its interior diameter substantially equal to the interior diameter of the body 1, is threaded on its outer periphery to fit the inner threads of the nipple 5. The ring 7 is preferably of substantially the same length as the hub 2, and is notched at 8 to provide shoulders for engaging with a spanner by means of which the ring 7 may be turned and forced into liquid-tight and gas-tight engagement with the gasket 4, which gasket is preferably formed of copper or other soft metal. In addition to forming a tight joint at the gasket, the pressure of the ring 7 upon the shoulder 3 causes the inside and outside threads of the nipple 5 to be clamped by the threads on the hub 2 and the ring 7 in such manner as to form a liquidand gas-tight joint throughout. The nipple 5 is thus con- Specification of Letters Patent.

fined between inside and outside walls and has a tight joint with both.
In assembling the device, the bend 1 is first placed in position, its elevation being determined as near as can be roughly estimated, before the floors of the building are laid. The adjustment of the flange permits the same to be brought to the exact floor level after the floor is in position, and as the inside is then more easily accessible than the outside, the advantage of being able to make the oint tight by an adjustment from the inside is obvious. On inserting the parts into the hub of the bend, the ring 7 is first screwed into the nipple5 as in Fig. 3, and the nipple 5 is then screwed into position in the hub 2. After the flange 6 has been adjusted to the proper elevation, the ring 7 is screwed home until it has a suflicient bearing upon the gasket 4 to insure that the joint throughout will be gas and water-tight.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it will be understood that some of the details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted, within the scope of the following claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
We claim:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a bend having a hub at one end, a nipple extending into the hub and having adjustable connection therewith, an inner part located concentrically within the nipple and being substantially co-extensive with said hub, and means for producing a gas tight joint between said nipple and said hub and inner part.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a bend having a hub at one end, a nipple extending into the hub and having an integral outwardly extending flange at its upper end, an inner part located concentrically within that part of the nipple which is surrounded by the hub, and adjustable longitudinally of said nipple, and means for producing a gas tight joint between said hub and inner part.
8. A water closet bend having an internally threaded hub and having an inwardly extending annular shoulder located inward of the threads on said hub, a flanged nipple having threaded engagement with said hub, a ring telescoping with said nipple and adjustable toward and away from said Patented Jan. 3, 1911..
shoulder, and shoulders on said ring whereby it may be adjusted from the inside of said nipple.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a hub having an inwardly extending shoulder on its under end, a nipple having threaded engagement with said hub, and a ring having threaded engagement with said nipple and adapted to bear on said shoulder so as to exert an endwise thrust on said nipple, to jam said threads and produce a gastight joint.
A water closet bend having an upwardly disposed hub internally threaded and having an annular shoulder below the threads thereon, a nipple flanged at its upper end and having threaded engagement with said hub and a ring having threaded engagement with said nipple and adjustable toward and away from said shoulder independently of the adjustment of said nipple within said hub.
(3. A water closet bend having an upwardly disposed hub internally threaded and havin an annular shoulder below the threat s thereon, a nipple flanged at its upper end and having threaded engagement with said hub, a ring having threaded engagement with said nipple and adjustable toward and away from said shoulder independently of the adjustment of said nipple within said hub, and a gasket interposed between said ring and shoulder.
7. A water closet bend having a hub at its upper end and an annular shoulder extending inwardly below the threads in said hub, a nipple having threaded engagement with said hub and. being internally threaded, an externally threaded ring telescoping with said nipple and adjustable toward and away from said shoulder for insuring a gas and water-tight joint regardless of the position of said nipple in said hub.
