M y wm fw mu Y United States Patent O1 nce 3,466,064 Patented Sept. 9, 1969 3,466,064 ADJUSTABLE FLANGE FOR A SILLCOCK Howard A. Fulton and Vaughn D. Flinner, Big Prairie, Ohio, assignors to Mansfield Sanitary, Inc. Filed Sept. 27, 1967, Ser. No. 671,020 Int. Cl. F16l 41/00, 5/00 U.S. Cl. 285-192 5 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE The said device includes a movable, cupped, ring flange mounted on -a sillcock adjacent a water pipe connection thereto, a cushion type ring gasket seated in said cupped portion thereof, and a snap ring seated in a sillcock channel adjacent said water pipe connection to hold said gasket in place, the said device providing -a closure or seal for an opening in a building wall carrying said water pipe through said wall.
BACKGROUND Field of invention This invention relates to 4art of sanitary plumbing systems and more particularly to the field of sillcock or faucet installations on the outer wall of buildings connected to water pipes from within said buildings and providing a closure or seal for the exterior end of the opening in said wall carrying said water pipes, particularly in geographical areas subject to freezing temperatures.
Description of the prior art The prior art of which we are familiar in the plumbing field that relates to seals or closures for the wall openings carrying water pipes to sillcock installations are of the rigid flange type located adjacent the water pipe connection and which are a fixed and an integral part of the metal sillcock and having a surface substantially perpendicular to the axial :alignment of the water channel of the sillcock or faucet Iadjacent the water pipe connection.
SUMMARY In contrast with the prior art in the field of plumbing installations of sillcocks and of outdoor faucets and the flanges used for sealing or closing the exterior end of the building wall openings for water pipes that pass through said walls and -are connected to said sillcocks and faucets, the present invention avoids the disadvantages found in such art in the following respects, among others: The adjustable flange of the present invention enables the plumber to adjust the Aflange to the building wall outer surface, regardless of whether it is exactly vertical or whether the water pipe wall opening and/ or water pipe therein is exactly perpendicular to the wall outer surface. Another advantage is that it provides a seal for such water pipe openings that will prohibit the entry of insects into the building through said openings. Still another advantage is that it provides an insulation for said water pipe at the exterior surface of the wall.
Other advantages, more or less ancillary to the foregoing, will appear in the following description and the accompanying drawing of the invention.
'IH-E DRAWING Referring to the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a vertical sectional side view of a sillcock with an ice expansion liner showing the adjustable flange in place.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the adjustable flange showing the flange in place on a wall surface that is not perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the water pipe connected to a sillcock.
THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The adjustable flange unit A is illustrated in FIG- URESl and 2 of the drawing in its position mounted on the sillcock B and affixed to the outer surface of a building wall. In FIGURE 1 the flange unit is in its normal position on a sillcock and in FIGURE 2 in its position where an adjustment is required to provide a seal.
The adjustable flange unit A includes a movable ring flange 10, having a ring opening .11 centrally thereof, a cupped portion 12 adjacent said ring opening, a flat washer-like portion 13 surrounding said cupped portion 12 and spaced apertures 14 in said washer-like portion 13 to receive screws or the like, a cushion type ring gasket 15 seated in said cupped portion 1.2 of said flange and a snap ring 16 for holding said ring gasket 15 in place. The sillcock B has a circular channel 17 adjacent the outer surface of the building wall with a side wall 18 adjacent the building wall and a side wall 19 remote therefrom. The said side wall 18 having a rim diameter slightly smaller than that of side wall 19. Also the diameter of said flange ring opening 11 preferably should be somewhere between the rim diameter of said channel side wall 18 and that of channel side wall 19 for e-ase of mounting said flange 10 in said sillcock channel 17 and for ease in adjusting it to an irregular wall surface.
The adjustable flange unit A is mounted on said sillcock B with the inner surface of the cupped portion 12 faced toward the building wall. Prior to such mounting the cushion type ring gasket 15 may be seated in said cupped portion 12 and then the side wall 18 of the channel may be inserted through the ring opening 11 of the flange 10. Thereafter, the snap ring 16 is seated behind the ring gasket 15 in the channel 17 adjacent said side wall 18 thereof. Said adjustable flange unit A may then be affixed to the building wall by means, such as screws 20 inserted through the rim apertures 14.
What is claimed is:
1. A sillcock and an adjustable flange Iassembly therefor of the class described comprising:
(a) a sillcock having a substantially cylindrical tubular portion thereof adjacent a water pipe connection thereto, said portion provided with flange holding means thereon, said flange holding means being defined by radially extending flanges secured to and spaced apart along said tubular portion,
(b) -an adjustable flange assembly having scalable elements for water pipe wall openings movably mounted on said sillcock flange holding means comprising,
a ring flange having an inner diameter larger than the outer diameter of the tubular portion located between said radially extending flanges,
a cushion type ring gasket, and
an annular retaining means therefor having an inner diameter substantially equal to the outer diameter of the tubular portion located between said radially extending flanges.
2. The sillcock and adjustable flange assembly defined n claim 1, wherein the ring flange has a cupped portion ladjacent the ring opening to receive and provide |a seat for the cushion type ring gasket.
3. The sillcock and adjustable flange assembly therefor defined in claim 1, wherein the ring flange has apertures adjacent the periphery thereof to receive means for securing the ring flange to a building wall.
4. The sillcock and adjustable flange assembly therefor defined in claim 1, wherein the annular retaining means is -a snap ring.
3 4 5. The sillcock adjustable ange assembly defined in 2,404,539 7/ 1946 Schmidt 285-192 claim 1, wherein the ring ange has a cupped portion 2,767,564 11/ 1956 Green 285-231 X adjacent the ring opening to receive and provide a seat 3,224,793 12/ 1965 Benjamin 285-321X for the cushion type ring gasket 'and the annular retain- 3,226,136 12/1965 Braden 285-192 X ing means is a snap ring. 5
