J. D. a; w. PALMr HAMMOGK. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 13, 1910.

JAY DEE PALM AND WILLIAM PALM, OF BELLV ILLE, TEXAS.
HAMMOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 13, 1910.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911. Serial No. 566,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J AY Dnn PALM and \VILLIAM PALM, citizens of the United States, residing at Bellville, in the county of Austin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hammocks, and particularly to that class of hammocks which are adapted for use in jails, ships, and the like wherein the same are utilized for sleeping purposes, and when they are not in use are folded to occupy a small amount of space.
This invention also contemplates the construction of a hammock of metal strips plaited to form a pair of pivotally con nected sections, said sections when folded being retained in spaced relation in order that the bedding may be retained therebetween.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hammock with bedding removed; illustrating the same when adapted for use; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hammock folded, illustrating the same supporting the bedding; Fig. 3 1s a perspective view of one of the hammock hooks adapted to support the one extremity of the hammock and also retain the opposite section when the same is folded; Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of one of the end hooks of the hammock; Fig. 5 is a top plan view partly broken away showing a modified form of the invention, and Fig. 6 is a section taken about on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
The present invention resides in the provision of a pair of pivotally connected sections constructed of plaited metal strips, said metal strips being connected at their outer terminals to transverse end bars. One of these transverse end bars is provided with a plurality of spaced turn buckles adapted to engage eyes in the wall of the cell, while the opposite transverse end bar is provided with a plurality of double hooks adapted to engage an eye in the wall of the cell, and to also engage the opposite end bar when the device 1s folded.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings 10 indicates a plurality of longitudinal metal strips having laced there-' through at regular intervals transverse metal strips 11, said transverse metal strips being secured at their terminals to the end longitudinal strips. These metal strips form a mesh which is constructed in two sections A and B, the longitudinal strips of each section being connected to the transverse sides of the rectangular eyes 12. Each pair of these rectangular eyes are connected by the met-a1 link 13, thus forming the hammock in two pivotally connected sections Which when raised Will be retained in spaced relation, by the rectangular eye 12 and the links 13.
The transverse end bar 14 of the section B is provided with a plurality of spaced slots 15 in which are secured the turn buckles 16. The transverse end bar 17 of the section A is likewise provided With a plurality of spaced slots 18 in which are pivoted the several hooks l9 and 19 hereinafter more fully described, one arm of said hooks engaging eyes secured to the supporting wall, thus supporting the adjacent terminal of the hammock which may be stretched taut by operating the turnbuckles 16.
The double hook 19 is formed of a single strip of metal, the construction of which is clearly set forth in Fig. 3 and comprises a hook member 20 which is adapted to normally rest in the same plane as the section A of the hammock. A transverse hook 21 is bent from the hook 20 at right angles to the shank thereof and is adapted to engage the transverse bar of the section B when the device is folded. The bend forming the hook 21 forms a loop which pivots the entire hook 19 to the transverse end bar 17 Thisconstruction permits the sections A and B to be retained in spaced relation due to the provision of the eyes and the links 13 forming a space in which the mattress and bedding may be retained when the entire device is folded and hung against the wall supporting the section A. WVhile the hooks 19 may be located at opposite end portions of the bar 17 the hook 19 will preferably be the intermediate hook on said bar.
Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings show a modified construction of the invention in which the end bars 17 are of round instead of flat form, the strips 11 being bent around the bars 17 and riveted thereto in any substantial manner. It is contemplated that either the preferred or modified constructions may be employed within the scope of the invention, the difi'erences therebetween not involving any material structural features.
Having thus described our invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A hammock comprising a plurality of woven metal strips formed in two sections,
said sections being connected by a series of rectangular eyes secured to the longitudinal strips of each section, pivotal links connecting said rectangular eyes, transverse end bars at the outer terminals of said sections, end turn buckles pivoted to one of said transverse bars, and double hooks pivoted to the opposite transverse bar, said hooks adapted to support one terminal of the device and to engage the opposite transverse bar when the sections rest against each other.
2. A hammock comprising aplurality of woven metal strips formed in two sections, the longitudinal strips of said sect-ions being connected by a series of rectangular eyes, pivotal links connecting said rectangular eyes, transverse end bars at the outer terminals of said sections, turn buckles pivoted to one of said side bars, and double hooks pivoted to the opposite transverse bar, said hooks adapted to support the opposite section when the hammock is folded, and said sections rest normally parallel.
in testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
