Be it known that I, LURA D. BAKER, of Albion, in the county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Curlers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hair curlers, and it has for its object the production of a simple and inexpensive device of this character by means of which the hair may be closely rolled and held in such position until a curl is imparted thereto, all of which is ac complished without applying heat in any manner.

In carrying out my invention I employ a cylindrical member provided with a longitudinal groove in its face, said groove serving as a seat for a soft, pliable wire. I11 practice the hair is tightly rolled around both the cylindrical member and the wire, after which the latter is bent or twisted around the curl thus formed, to hold the same in position, said cylindrical member being then withdrawn.

The invention will be hereinafter fully forth and particularly pointed out in the 0 mm.

In the accompanying drawing :Figure l is a plan view illustrating my improved hair curler. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the wire removed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. F ig. 4 is a transverse section on the line M, Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing, 10 designates a solid cylindrical member having a longitudinal groove 11 formed in the shorter length thereof, said groove being arranged to form a seat for a soft pliable wire 12. The body of the wire 12 is of a thickness greater than the depth of the groove 11 so that a considerable portion of said body extends above the plane of the groove. The ends of said cylindrical member are beveled as indicated at 13, the ends 141 of the wire projecting a short distance beyond the tops of the beveled portions.

In practice, a section of wire 12 is placed in its seat 11 and the hair wound around I said wire and its supporting member. When the desired quantity of hair has been rolled thereupon the operator holds it with one hand and the ends of the wire 12 are grasped by the thumb and finger of the other hand and bent upwardly, as illustrated in dotted lines, and clasped around the hair, permanently holding the same. The member 10 is then withdrawn and a second wire 12 is placed in seat 11 and the operation re peated ad infinitum. The wires are allowed to remain around the hair a suflicient time to impart the necessary curl, after which they are straightened for future use.

The advantages of my invention are at once apparent. It will be particularly noted that the hair may be closely curled in a convenient manner without the use of heat. It will also be observed that by having the ends of the cylindrical member beveled, the operator is enabled to readily grasp the undersides of the end portions of the wire for the purpose of bending, as above described. It will be further noted that by making the body of the wire of a thickness greater than the depth of the groove, the said wire is en aged by the hair and held in position in the groove during the wrapping process.

I claim as my invention A hair curler comprising a solid member having beveled ends and a longitudinal groove therein and a pliable wire removably located in said groove, the body of said wire being of a thickness greater than the depth of said groove, whereby the body of the wire extends above the plane of the groove to be engaged by the hair when the latter is being applied to the curler, the ends of said wire overhanging the beveled ends of said member.
