MAGAZINE PLATE-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMIER E. THRASHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Cumberland, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Magazine Plate-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to photographs, and its object is to provide a new and improved magazine plate holder, arranged to enable the user to carry and use a large number of plates, to fill the same successively into a single plate holder for subsequent exposure in the camera, to allow returning the exposed plate to the magazine without requiring the use of a dark room and permitting the user to develop the exposed plate at his convenience. For the purpose mentioned use is made of a storage magazine and a permanent magazine, arranged to fill the unexposed plates from the storage magazine into the permanent one, to then allow transferring the plates singly to the removable plate holder for exposure in the camera, and to return the exposed plate to the permanent magazine, and finally when all the exposed plates have been filled into the permanent magazine, to transfer the said exposed plates to the storage magazine for storing until it is desired to develop the plates.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The plate holder is mounted in a casing, having the sections A and A, of which the section A is provided with a suitable cover A for closing the upper open ends of the sections A and A. The section A is pro vided at the inner faces of its sides with guideways A for the reception of a storage magazine B, provided with a slide l3 and a knob B to permit convenient ins rtion and removal of the storage magazine 13 in and from the casing section A. The unexposed sensitive plates 0 (say a dozen) are filled in a dark room into the storage magazine B and then the latter is transferred to the casing A, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. In the casing section A is held apermanent magazine D having a slide D adjacent to the contacting faces of the magazines B and D, so that when the slides B and D are withdrawn and the casing is turned over then the unexposed sensitive plates readily pass into the permanent magazine D, as indicated in Fig. 4, and after this has been done the slide D is replaced and the empty storage magazine B is removed from the casing section A.
The front open face of the permanent magazine D is connected at one side by a pivot E with a plats-transferring chamber F, having slide F and fixed in the casing sect-ion A. Next to this transferring chamber F is removably held in the casing section A a single plate holder G having a slide G, the said plate holder G being arranged for use in the camera, so that the single plate transferred into this plate holder, as hereinafter more fully described, can be exposed in the camera. After the exposure is made, the plate holder G with the exposed plate therein is placed into the guideway A of the casing section A, to allow transferring of this exposed plate to the permanent magazine D, to be stored therein until this magazine D is filled with the exposed plates, and then the exposed plates contained in this magazine D are transferred to the storage magazine B, then re-inscrted in the casing Jr. for the purpose and as hereinafter more fully described.
Suitable light excluding strips are arranged on the contacting faces of the several parts. to guard against the sensitive plates becoming light struck.
In order to enable the user to keep track of the number of plates transferred singly to the plate holder G to be used in the camera, use is made of the following device, shown in Fig. 10: On the top of the magazine D is arranged a lever ll. tulcrumed at ll and having a hook H adapted to engage a keeper I fixed on the chamber F. so that when the magazine D is turned on its pivot E. as shown in Fig. 7, then the hook H passes the keeper I to engage the outer face thereof. as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 10, to hold the magazine D locked in and out of register position relative to the chamber F. A spring J attached at one end to the chamber F is connected with the lever H. to normally hold the same in the position shown in Fig. 10, and the lever H is provided with elongated slots H through which extends a pin K attached to the magazine D, thus limiting the swinging motion of the lever B. llnderneath the lever H is arranged and fulcrumcd on the top of the magazine D, a ratchet and indicating wheel L adapted to be engaged by a spring pawl N secured to the chamber F. so that when the magazine D is swung into an angular or out of register position with the chamber F, then the wheel L is turned the distance of one tooth. and when the magazine D is swung back to the registering position, the wheel L remains at a. standstill, as the pawl N then glides over the corresponding tooth of the wheel L. Return movement of the wheel L is provided against by a. dog L, shown in Fig. 10. The upper face of the wheel L is provided with numerals arranged in a circle, to successively appear in an aperture H formed in the lever H, so that the user of the device can see at a glance how many plates have been transferred from the magazine D and the chamber F to the plate holder G.
The plate holder (2 is provided in its bottom with a plate-retaining lever 0 (see Fig. 8). fulcrumed at O and provided at one end with a catch (T adapted to engage the lower edge of the plate 0 tilled into the holder G. to securely hold the plate against movement in the plate holder. The lever O is pressed on by a spring P. to hold the clip O in engagement with the plate, and the said lever O is adapted to be engaged by either one of pins Q. and Q. of which the pin Q is s cured in the bottom oi. the casing section A. while the pin Q, is secured in the bottom oi the casing section A. Either ot' the pins 0, Q is adapted to pass through an opening G in the bottom of the plate holder G, as plainly shown in Fig. 8. so that when the plate holder G is pressed downward in the casing A then the pin Q. acts on the lever 0, so as to retract the clip 0 below the opening in the holder for the 1'L)(.C]')ll( l1 of the plate C, and when the holder (r is removed troin the casing section A. then the pin Q. releases the lever O and the spring P acts on the lever O to move the clip in retaining engagement with the plate held in the holder G at the time. ln :1 like manner when the plate holder G after the exposure is made is placed into the casing section A and is pressed dowi'iward therein. then the pin Q engages the lever (f), to swing the same into a retracting position against the tension of the spring I, to release the exposed plate and to allow ready transfer of this exposed plate from the plate holder (l into the permanent magazine D.
The operation is as follows: When the several parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 2 and 3, then the loaded magazine B is in the ca sing section A. and the several slides B. D. F and G ar in closed positions. and in order to transfer all. the unexposed sensitive plates C from the storage magazine B into the permanent magazine D. it is necessary for the operator to withdraw both slides 13 and D. The casing is then tipped over so as to cause the ready transfer of the plates C from the storage magazine 1') into the magazine D, after which the slide D is replaced and the empty storage magazine B is removed from the *asing section A. The casing is now turned over into the position shown in Fig. 5, so as to bring the lowermost plate C- into the chamber F on top of the slide F. and then the magazine D is turned on its pivot E, so as to move the magazine D out of register with the chamber F, at the same time carrying all the plates except the bottom one along, thus holding the remaining plates in position for the time being. The operator now moves both slides F and Gr into an outermost position. so as to allow the single plate in the chamber F to drop down into the open plate holder G- (see dotted lines in Fig. 5), the dropping plate being guided by the clip 0 and then the plate holder (it is pushed inward tor retracting the clip 0 to allow the plate to tall into proper position in the plate holder G. The slides F and G are then pushed inward, after which the magazine D is returned to its normal registering position. and the plate holder G is removed for use in the camera. to expose the plate held in the holder G in the usual manner. After this has been done the plate holder G is placed into the casing A, to face the magazine D, and then the slides G and D are withdrawn, to allow the exposed plate to pass into the magazine D on top of the uppermost unexposed sensitive plate C. lVhen this has been done the slides D, G are pushed back into the closed position and then the plate holder G is removed and replaced in the casing section A, and the above-described operation is repeated. to transfer the now lowermost unexposed plate C in the ma gazine D by way of the chamber F into the plate holder G. The second plate contained in the plate holder (it is next exposed in the camera and this exposed plate is transferred into the magazine D, as above described, and this (uperation is repeated until all the unexposed plates are sueccs sively transferred from the magazine l) into the plate holder G used in the camera and returni-al to the magazine D. Now after all the iuiexposed plates originally contained in the magazine D have been transferred, exposed and returned to the said-magazine, then the operator places the empty storage magazine l) in position in the casing section A, and then the slides B and D are with drawn and the casing is tilted to the right, so as to transfer the exposedpl ates mmtained in the magazine D into the magazine ll, after which the slides 13, D are replaced, and the magazine B filled with exposed ilaten (one dozen) is removed from the casg and another storage magazine B, previously filled with the unexposed plates, is pla ed into the casing section A, to allow trai'isferring those unexposed plates to the magazine D, as previously explained.
From the foregoing it will. be seen tha any desired number of storage magazines B filled with unexposed plates may be used in succession for transferring unexposed plates to the magazine D, and the storage magazines 13 are then reused for receiving the exposed plates, thus enabling the user to arry a large number of plates for use in the camera and without requiring the. use of a dark room, as the transfer of the unexposed plates and the replacing of the exposed plates in the storage magazine B can be carried on in daylight without danger of the plates becoming light struck.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A magazine plate holder, comprising a casing, a permanent magazine in the casing, a removable storage magazine in the casing and loaded with unexposed plates, means, whereby the unexposed plates may be transferred from the storage magazine to the permanent magazine, means for removing the unexposed plates singly from one side of the said permanent magazii'ie, and means for refilling the said permanent magazine from the opposite side with exposed plates.
2. A magazine plate holder, comprising a casing, a permanent magazine in the casing, a removable storage magazine in the casing and loaded with unexposed plates, means, whereby the unexposed plates may be 'tninsferred from the storage magazine to the permanent magazine, means for removii'ig the unexposed plates singly from oneside of the said permanent magazine, and means or refilling the said permanent magazine om the opposite side with exposed plates and when tilled with exposed plates permitting refilling of the storage magazine with exposed plates.

4. A magazine plate holder comprising casing, a permanentmagazine in the casing, removable storage magazine in. the casing at one side of the said permanent magazine, a platedransferring device on the other side of the said permanent magazine, a plate holder for ren'iovable connection with the said transferring device to allow transfer of the unexposed plates singly from the said permanent magazine to the said plate holder, and means for connecting the said. plate holder to the said permanent magazine for transferring the exposed plate to the said permanent magazine.
5. A magazine plate holder comprising a casing, a closed storage magazine ha *ing a slide and removably mounted in the casing, a permanent magazine in the casing and having a slide at the receiving face and open at the exit face, the said magazines being adapted to register with each other at the faces having the slides, a plate-trapsferring chamber open at the receiving face and adapted to register with the exit face of the said permanent magazine, the said transferring chamber having a slide at the exit face, and a plate holder for removable connection with the said platotra sferring chamber.

A magazine plate holder coniprising a casing, a closed storage magazine having a slide and movably mounted in the casing, a. permanent magazine in the casing and having a slide at the receiving face and open at the exit. face, the said magazines being adapted to register with each other at the faces having the slides, a plate-transferring chamber open at the receiving face and adapted to register with the exitface of the said permanent niagazine, the said transferring chamber having a slide at the exit face, and a pivot connecting the said pern'ianentmagazine with the said plate-transferring chamber to permit of moving the said 1naga zine'and plate-transferring chamber out of and into register one with the other.

A magazine plate holder comprising a magazine open at one face, a plate-transferring chamber, the said magazine and the said chamber being normally in register with each other and capable of being moved out of register one with the other, a slide in the said plate -transt'erring chamber, a plate holder having a slide and adapted to register with the said plate-transferring chamher, and a casing made in sections, one of which supports the said plate-transferring chamber and is provided with gnideways for the said plate holder, and the other casing section is held on the said magazine and is provided with guideways for receiving 1 holder for retracting the sald plate retainer,
the said plate holder.

A magazine plate holder comprising a magazine open at one face, a plate-transferring chamber, the said magazine and the said chamber being normally in register with each other and capable of being moved out of register one with the other, a slide in the said plate-transferring chamber, a plate holder having a slide and adapted to register with the said plate-transferring chamber, a casing made in sections, one of which supports the said plate-transferring chamber and is provided with guideways for the said plate holder, and the other is held on the said magazine and is provided with guideways for receiving the said plate holder, and a storage magazine having a slide and adapted to engage the said guideways in the casing section attached to the said first-named magazine.

A magazine plate holder comprising a magazine open at one face, a plate-transferring chamber, the said magazine and the said chamber being normally in register with each other and capable of being moved out of register one with the other, a slide in the said plate-transferring chamber, a plate holder having a slide and ada )ted to register with the said plate-transterring chamber, a casing made in sections, one of which supports the said plate-transferring chamher and is provided with guideways for the said plate holder, and the other of which is held on the said magazine and is provided with guideways for receiving the said plate holder, pins in the bottoms of the said casing sections, a plate retainer in the said plate holder, and an actuating device in the plate the said actuating device being adapted to be engaged by either of the said pins.
10. A magazine plate holder provided with a plate holder having a spring-pressed plate-retaining lever, and a fixed pin for engagement with the lever to retract the same.
11. A magazine plate holder provided with a plate holder having a spring-pressed plateretaining lever, and a casing having a fixed pin adapted to register with an opening in the said plate holder, to engage the said lever for retracting the latter.
