UNITE-D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH KOLOMYJEC, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CARD-GAME ACCESSORY.
Application led April 29, 1920.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH KoLoMYJEC, a citizen of Poland, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Game Accessories, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to 'certain new and useful Yimproverr'ients in card game accessories and has more particular reference to an improved device Vadapted for employment l in connection with the playing of card games so vas to enable the players` to readily keep a record of the number of hands which have been dealt for a given periodl of play as well as to provide an effective means for dealing the cards one at a time to the players and t simultaneously register each card as it is dealt so as to enable the dealer' to accurately deal. the required number of cards to each player for avoiding mis-deal.
In carrying out the above, I provide adevice which, broadly stated, comprises a suitable receptacle for the cards having a hinged closure and a depressible delivering or .follower plate, means being provided for retaining the follower plate depressed upon the insertion of cards within the receptacle and for simultaneously registering when the cards are placed therein each time. The invention further includes means for releasing the follower' plate whenthe receptacle has been closed, and means carried by the cover of the receptacle operable to eject the cards one at a" time from ther'eceptacle as said cards are fed' upwardly by the follower plate, and to 4 simultaneously register each card as it is ejected from the receptacle.
lVith thc above general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists" in the novel. form, combi.- nation and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, shownin the accompanying drmvings and claimed.

Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. Ziut-aken substantially upon line V-V of Fig. 3,
Fig. 6 is a vertical substantially central longitudinal. sectional view. of the device shown in Fig. l,
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the ejector slide-carrying plate and associated parts detached,
Fig. S is a fragmentary sectional view drawn on a large scale and taken substantially upon line VIII-VIII of Fig. 7,
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. Staken substantially upon .line IX-JX of Fig. 7,
Fig. 10 is a side elevational view of the follower plate and the actuating springs thereof. i f A Fig. 1l is a sectional view taken substantially upon line K14-XI of Fig. 10, and
Fig. 19. is a top plan view of the combined ratchet wheel and indicator disk which shows the number of deals which have been made.
Referring more in detail to the several views, the present invention embodies a suitable receptacle 5 which is preferably rectangular in plan and of such size as to snugly receive a deck of cards 6 (see Fig. 6) when placed therein. A flat follower plate 7 of about the same size as the card is loosely arranged within the receptacle 5-for sliding movement upwardly and downwardly therein, and a helical compression spring 8 is at- 'cached to the follower plate 7 at each corner thereof so as to normally urge the follower plate upwardly for a purpose which will presently become apparent, the lower ends of the spring 8 being anchored to the bottom wall of the receptacle 5 by means of screws 9 or the like as is clearly shown in Fig. i. The upper ends of the spring 8 may be soldered or otherwise fastened to the follower plate so as to insure durability of the construction and retention of the various parts in their proper relation. The ends of the followei` plate 7 are bent at right angles to the body thereof to provide depending end'flanges 10 Idisposed in flat engagement with the front and rear walls of the receptacle 5 as .is shown in Fig. 6, and inwardly extending corner lugs 1l are provided on the lower edges of the flanges l0 so as to cooperate with suitable stop lugs 12 provided upon the sides ot' the receptacle 5 for limiting the upward movement of the follower plate 7. The flanges are provided with end notches 13 so as to permit ready insertion of the follower plate even though one pair of the stop lugs 12 are permanent with the receptacle 5. In other words, the stop lugs 12 at the rear of the receptacle may be permanently fixed thereto while those at the forward end may be removable because of the provision of the notches 18, as the follower plate 7 can be inserted at its rear end so that thevlugs 12 at this point pass the flange 10 and lie inwardly of the same above the lugs 11 when the follower plate is fully inserted. The removable stop lugs 12 may then be inserted for limiting the upward movement of the follower plate at both ends.
A lever 14 is pivotally mounted between its ends as at 15 within the receptacle 5 and substantially centrally upon the bottom wall of the latter as is clearly shown in Fig. 4, and the opposite ends of the lever 14 are upwardly offset as at 16. A push rod 17 is pivotally attached as at 18 to the lever 14 at one side of the pivot 15, and this push rod slidably extends through a suitable opening provided in one side wall of the receptacle 5, the push rod 17 having a linger piece Aor knob 19 upon the outer free end thereof exteriorly of the receptacle whereby the operator may actuate the push rod for swinging the lever 14. A leaf spring 20 engages the lever 14 at that side of the pivot 15 which is opposite to the joint of connection of the push rod 17 with the lever, and said spring 20 is fastened to the receptacle as at 21 and is so proportioned as to normally swing the lever 14 to a position diagonal of the receptacle with the offset ends 16 disengaged from the inwardly extendng ledges22 which are {provided} substantially centrally upon the lower edges of the follower plate flanges 10. A combined ratchet wheel and indicator disk 23 is rotatably mounted within the receptacle 5 upon the upper face of the bottom wall of the latter and has a plurality of progressing numerals 24 upon the under face thereof adapted to be successively exposed through the a erture 25 provided in the bottom wall of tie receptacle 5 as seen in Fig. 2. A yieldable pawl 26 is fastened to one end ofthe lever 14 adjacent the push rod 174 and extends in a direction away from the latter so that its free end operatively engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel 23 as shown in Fig. 4. It will thus be seen that this inward movement of the push rod 17 the pawl 26 causes a partial rotation of the Adisk 23 so as to expose the next number thereon through the aperture or opening 25. The receptacle 5 is provided with a second pawl 27 which engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel 23 so as to prevent retrograde movement of the latter. The reason for retaining the follower plate 7 lowered upon the insertion of the deck of cards is to prevent the latter from being ejected while the receptacle is open, it being the intention of the invention to only release the push rod 17 after the receptacle has been closed when the follower plate may then be free to move upwardly. It will thus be seen that ellicient means is provided for indicating each time the deck of cards is placed in the receptacle for dealing so that the players may have a record of the number of deals made during a given period of play, while at the same time, means is operated to retain the follower plate lowered until the receptacle has been closed for insuring against undesirable displacement of the cards from the casing or receptacle.
The cover 28 of the receptacle 5 is substantially of the same form as the latter 4although of slightly less depth, and the same is hingedly connected to the receptacle 5 at its rear end as at 29 whereby the cover may be readily swung to open or closed position.
32 which is fastened to the top wall of the cover by any suitable means such as stud screws 33, suitable sleeves 34 being disposed on the Shanks of the latter so as to maintain the plate 32 in proper spaced relation to the top wall of the cover 28. A card ejecting slide 35 comprising a flat metal plate provided with a friction member 36 upon its under surface, is slidably disposed for forward and backward movements against the under Surface of the plate 32, the member 36 of the ejector slide being preferably of textile fabric or the like so as to insure forward movement of the top card of the deck when the ejector plate is moved forward by a means to be presently described, the ejected cards being those projected partially through a slot 37 formed by cutting away the meeting edges of the front walls of the receptacle 5 and the cover 28. The ejector slide-carrying plate 32 is preferably provided with a depending rib 38 at its forward edge arranged to bear upon the cards and to insure proper registration of the uppermost card with the slot 37 so that no interference will be presented to the ejection of the card. The ejector slide is preferably slidably connected to the plate 32 by means of stud screws 39 which pass through longitudinal elongated slots 40 provided in the plate 32 and are threaded into the slide 35,r suitable washers 4l being placed upon the Shanks of the screws 39 so as to prevent the screws from passing through the slots 40, and the forward washer 41 being enlarged so as to bear upon the under surface of the top wall of the cover 28 as shown in Fig. 6 and thereby insure against vibration of the slide when moved, z'. e., to steady the same. A further longitudinal elongated slot 42 is provided in the plate 32 between the two slots 40, and another stud screw 43 passes through the slot 42 and is threaded into the ejector slide An angular lever 44 is pivoted as at 45 to the plate 32 adjacent one edge of the latter, and the inner end of one arm of this lever is provided with a longi; tudinal elongated slot 46 through which the screw 43 also extends so as to provide a sliding and pivotal connection between said lever 44 and the ejector slide 35. The other end of the lever extends through an elongated slot 47 provided in the adjacent side wall of the cover 28 and is provided upon its outer free end exteriorly of the cover with a depending lug 48 forming a linger piece whereby the lever may be manually pressed for swinging about the pivot 45 so as to cause forward movement of the ejector 35, the latter being normally maintained in a rearward position by a spring 49 suitably anchored to the cover,28 and having a free end bearing against the inner arm of the lever 44.
Another combined ratchet wheel and indicator disk 50 is' rotatably mounted against the unrder surface of the top wall of the cover 28 upon a. stud 5l7 and the `progressing marginal numerals 52 upon the disk 50 are so arranged as to be .successively exposed through the opening or aperture 53 provided in the top wall of the covering 28. A small rectangular plate or slide 54 is slidably disposed upon the upper surface of the plate 32 at one side of the ratchet wheel 50 and between a pair of guide ribs 55 provi-ded on the plate 3.2. The slide 54 is connected with the ejector slide 35 by means of stud screws 56 which extend through a further pair of longitudinal elongated slots 5T provided in the plate 32 and enter the ejector slide the ratchet wheel 50 at which time the ejector slide is moved forward, the pawl being effective for rotating the ratchet wheel 5l) such distance upon each forward moven'ient as to bring the next succeeding numeral upon the ratchet wheel into view at the opening 53. A spring pawl GO is fastened to the cover 23 and engages the ratchet wheel 5t) so as to prevent retrograde movement of the latter. It will thus be seen that a thoroughly practical and simple means is provided for delivering' cards one at a time through the slot 3T and for simultaneously registering the cards as they are delivered that the dealer may accurately deal the wards to the players and will have visual indication of the fact when each player has been dealt the required number of cards. rThe present ejecting means` does not deliver the cards entirely from the device. but projects the same outwardly of the accessory sutliciently to enable the dealer to grasp the. same and entirely remove it for handing the same to the player.
By means of the present device constantly occurring mistakes are eliminated or made impossible, and successive dealing of the cards from the top of the deck is made compulsory. f
l'n the use of the present invention, the latches are released so as to enable the dealer to swing the cover 28 open so that he ma)Y readily place a deck of cards which have been j u'eviously shutlied within the receptacle 5 and upon the follower plate 7, it bcing understood that the dealer fdepresses the follower' plate T and pushes inwardly upon the rod l? so as to hold the follower plate lowered, prior to placing the deck of cards upon the follower plate. Then the cards have been disposed in this manner7 the proper numeral on the disk 23 is caused to be exposed through the opening' 25, and the cover 28 is then closed and latehed. The rod 1T is then released so as to free the follower plate T by disengagement of the lever i4 from the legs 22. The dealer then presses the lever 44 so as to cause forward movement of the ejector slide 35 for moving the top card outwardly through the slot 3T and for simultaneously imparting moremcnt to the disk or ratchet wheel 50 so as to bring the required numeral on the latter in view at the opening The card is then grasped by the dealer and handed to the proper player' and this operation is repeated for as many times as necessary until the required number of cards have .been dealt to the several players engaged in the game being played. lVhen the hand thus dealt. has been played, the cards are again shuffled and the operation of placing the cards in tl e receptacle 5 repeated, registration being made each time that the deck is placed lll (l Cil in the device so as to furnish visible indication of the number of hands which have been dealt in a given. period.
It is believed that the construction and operation of the present invention will be readily understood as well as its advantages and practicability appreciated by those skilled in the art,
Various changes may be made in the forms of the various parts and the combinations and arrangements thereof as shown without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
