To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand View, in the county of Spencer ano State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Brush Heads and Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in detachable brush heads and handles and has for its object to provide a brush head and handle which may be readily attached to a broom or brush of lany character, such, as for example, a white wash brush.

Another object of this invention is to provide means to allow for the ready removal of the straw or bristles and the replacing thereof by new straw or bristles whenever desired.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of my improved brush head and handle; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 is a central vertical transverse section; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the portion of the brush supporting bail.

Referring to the drawingfor a more particular description of the invention, the numeral 1 indicates the brush and 2 the brush head which may be of cylindrical, square or other form in cross section and is provided with a longitudinal slot 3 for the reception of the bristles or straw. The head 2 is provided with a longitudinal series of transverse openings 4 which are disposed approximately at right angles with the slot 3 and through which are adapted to be inserted a plurality of fastening tubes or nipples 5 adapted to part and laterally compress the bristles or straws within the longitudinal slot 3 in the broom head. The head further comprises the approximately U- shaped bail or yoke 6, the straight end portions of which are provided with pairs of tapering lugs or projections 8 which are adapted to lit in pairs of corresponding vertically alined recesses 9 formed in the ends of the head 2. The central portion of the bail is provided with the handle receiving tube 1l through which passes the handle 12. The handle 12 is provided at its lower end with the clamping head 13 which is suitably recessed to receive the t-op of the head 2. The handle is further provided .near its lower end with the exterior thread 14, upon which screws the adjusting collar or thumb nut 15, by the adjustment of which the clamping head is fo-rced into clamping engagement wit-h the top of the brush head 2 and the lugs or projections are drawn up into the recesses 9. The bristles or straws of the brush are held in compact form by the binding wire 16 which may be applied in any suitable manner. The fastening tubes or nipples 5 may be inserted in or removed from position by appropriate tool, such as the tube engaging member 17, which is suitably shaped to engage the inner periphery of the fastening tubes or nipples 5 and force or draw said tubes through the transverse opening 4 in the brush head.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
