Be it known that I, WALTER M. Brno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Gilead, in the county of Montgomery, State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whiffietrees, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1, in the appended drawings is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse or cross sectional view showing in part the construction of the several parts, the manner of assembling them together and securing them in place. Fig. 3, is a View in detail showing the elliptical form of the whiflietree and the niches or recesses in the same. Fig. 4, shows the construction of both clips, clevises, bolts and nuts.

Similar letters of reference in the four figures indicate similar parts.

The object of my invention is to provide a whitlietree of sufficient strength and low cost of construction, with interchangeable parts, all of which, or, either of which, may be replaced when broken or worn in use, and to quickly, conveniently and successfully take up any slack or looseness in both clips, clevises, bolts and nuts, which may from shrinkage or other cause occur while in use, thus supplying a long felt want on the part of those who use farm implements.

The body of the whiifletree, G, is constructed of any suitable material of proper size and length, and is elliptical in shape and near each end on one edge are out vertical semi-circular niches or recesses, A, A, on the opposite edge at the longitudinal center of the tree is cut a larger niche or recess, A to receive a bolt larger in size than those at the ends of the tree. In these niches or recesses are embedded the bolts, G, C, C, when in position. The clips, E, E, E, are made of band iron or steel, with a square perforation, B, at one end and a round perforation, B at the other, as in Rig. 4. The clevises, B, B, B, are made of iron or steel rods and have near their ends square and round perforations B, and B corresponding with like perforations in clips, E, E, E. Both clips and clevises are without recesses. The bolts, C, C, C, are square adjacent to their heads the remainder being round and threaded to receive the nuts, D, D, D.

A whilfletree (or swingletree) embodying this combination in construction, to wit, with clips E, E, E, and clevises B, B, B, on the tree G, with the square and round perforations in each corresponding and in line with niches or recesses A A and A with bolts 0, C, C, penetrating perforations B, embedding. in niches or recesses A, A, and A protruding through B sufficiently to receive nuts D, D, D, the square portion of bolts 0, C, G, engaging the square perforations B, is entirely ri 'id when tension of nuts D, D, D, is applie and by which any slack or looseness, which may from any cause occur, can be easily and quickly taken up, thus constantly maintaining a close, firm, unyielding contact of clips E, E, E, and clevises B, B, B, with the tree G. If shrinkage should occur from exposure to the extremes of weather a little more tension on the nuts, D, D, D, will renew the original contact and rigidity of all the parts inasmuch as the square portion of the bolts 0, C, C, engage the square perforations, B, in both clips and clevises. Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim and what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is;

The combination of an elli tically formed tree G, niched or recessed A, A with clips E, E, E, and clevises B, B, B, with perforations B, and B with bolts C, C, C, the square portion of which engages the square perforations B, embedding in the niches A, A, and A penetrating perforations B with nuts D, D, D, on their protruding ends in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
