FURNACE.
, Specification of'Iietters Patent;
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
Application filed November 9,1907. Serial No. 401518.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, Mancus ltu'riinnuuno, of Loclrport, in thecounty. of Niagara and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Furnaces,
whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I
My improvement may. be advantageously employed in an electric furnacecomprising -a statioi' ary casing in which the electrodes are mounted, and it is the object of'iny invention to provide a removable hearth 21rraugcd to form a floor for the furnace casing and comprising a receptacle in which molten naterialmay be received and transported from said furnace.
As lu-reinafter described, said hearth is circular, saucer shaped, and so constructed and arranged that itmay be raised into opp or lowered upon tracks on which it may be shifted-laterally so as to be tilted and emptied into a suitable conveyer.
As hereinafter described, 'a vertical plunger is arranged beneath the furnace to raise and lower said hearth, and the latter. isp'rovided with supporting wheels upon which it maybe progressed when lowered..
A convenientadjunctive feature of the invcnlion is an auxiliary supporting device adapted to niaintain the hearth in raised p0 sit-ion independent y of said plunger and comprising wedge blocks which are inter .posed between said tracks and wheels.
My invention comprises the various novel features of construction more definitely specified and.
and arrangement herelna fter claimed.
In the drawings; Figure I, is a sectional viewof a furnace showing a hearth raised into its normal operative relation with the fur- Fig. II,'is;a' view similar to Fig. I,
into a conveyor. Fig. III, is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line III, III, in
device in operat ve-relation with one o the In said figures; the stationary furnace easing 1, is supported by the columns 2, above the, track 3, and incloses the electrodes 5 and 6, which may be supported, raised and low-' cred thereinby any convenient means. Said furnace casing 1, is conveniently made cirbeneath said furnace a dcr 1.6;
tents of the hearth into a for instance,-a tang- 28, mounted on a truck drawings, .for instance,
cular, and, the removable hearths 8, are also circular and-saucer shaped to form receptm cles 9 for the molten material received from said casing. Said hcarths are preferably formed of refractory material fitted'in metallic casings 10, which, as shown, may be formed of two metallic shells disposed in.
concentric relation. Each hearth 8, is provided with a truck frame 12 and four supporting wheels 13 which register with-said tracks 3; so, that it may be progressed thereon to and from said casing 1.
The plunger 15, is arranged to reciprocate casing 1, to raise and lower said hearths, and may be conveniently actuated by hydraulic pressure in the cylinor be upheld byJhe detent IT, as shown in Fig. I. I
A 'bearth 8, may be upheld in operative relation with the casing l, as shown in Fig. 1, independently of illary supporting devices'coi'nprising oppositely inclined wedges 18, having eyes 1.2), engaged by hook bars 20; the latter being screw threaded and coupled by the turn buckle 21, so that the latter may be rotated to draw said wedges toward each other between said tracks 3 and wheels 13. 'VVhen it is desired to discharge the contents ofa hearth, said turn buckle 21 may be reversely rotated .to thrust said wedge blocks 18 apart, and, said blocks being removed while the -hearth is supported by the plunger 15, the latter may be lowered until the hearth is supported by the wheels 13 on the tracks 3. The hearth may then be shifted on said tr'acksuntil the wheels '13 encounter an abut ment 22 which is local to said tracks, as shown in Fig. II,'and, thereupon, the'hearth said plunger 15, by auxmay be tilted. upon-the pivotal support af:
forded by the axle 24, conveniently by the chain 25, engaging .the' clevis- 26,. on the hearth shelllO, so .as to discharge the consuitable conveyer,
frame 29, provided with wheels to traverse the tracks 31.,
Itisto be understood that a plurality of hearths may be successively 'employed with the single furnace easing 1, shown in the said casing may be located between two similarconveyers into which the contents of alternately er'n tied.
I do not deslre to limit myself to the pre cise details of construction herein set forth,
the hearths may: be
as is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as- 2. In a furnace, the combination with a stationary casing; of a removable-hearth arranged'to form a floor for said casing and comprising a receptacle-for molten material; and, adjustable means arranged to support said hearth in operative relation with said casing, com rising a wedge.
' 3. In a urnace, the combination with a "stationary casing; of a removable hearth arranged to form a floor for said casing and comprising a receptacle for molten material;
4 adjustable means arranged to support said hearth in operative relation with said casing, comprising oppositely inclined wedges;
and, means arranged to relatively shift said wedges.
4. In a furnace, the combination with a stationary casing; of a removable hearth ar-- ranged to fo'rm a floor for said casing and com 'i'isin 'a re'ce tacle for molten material means" arranged to raise. and lower said hearth'with respect to said casing; and means distinct from'said raising and lowermg means 'andindependent of said casing arranged to supportv said hearth inoperative relation withsa id casing.
v 5. In a furnace, the combination with a stationary casing; of a removable hearth arranged to form a floor for said casing and comprising a receptacle for molten material;.
means arranged to raise and lower said hearth with respect to said casing; and means independent of said casing, below said hearth and removable with respect tO-said raising and lowering means arranged to support said hearth in operative relation with said casing. i
6. An electric furnace comprising a stationary casing; an electrode supported in a chamber in said casing a removableheart-h forming a floor in said casin means arranged to raisevand. lower sai hearth withfl' respect to said electrode; and, means independent of said casing, below said hearth and removable with respect to said raisingand lowerin means, capable :of 'retainin said'hearth in operative relation with sai casin 7. In a furnace, the combination with a stationary casing; of a removablehearth .arranged to form a flo'or for-said casing,'co1n prising a receptacle for molten material and having supporting wheels whereby it may be progressed to an from said casin means, arranged to raise andlower sai (hearth with respect to' said c'asin and means 'dis-' tinct'from said raising an lowering'means, extending below said su porting wheels and 7 arranged to support sai relation with said casing.
