SPIGOT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO F. EIDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVarren, in the county of IVarren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spigots, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to faucets and the main objects of the said invention are: to provide a self-seating valve for a faucet which may be easily operated by the hand or by pressure of the edge of the receptacle desired to be filled.
lVith these objects in View the invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vice showing its mode of operation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing the arrangement of the valve and valve-stem. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the valve and its stem.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the various figures of the drawings.
A faucet body or barrel 1, of any suitable form, is provided with a discharge nozzle 2, and is further provided near its admission end with a suitable valve-seat 3 and near its head end and adjacent the opening to nozzle 2 with a partition 4 containing a suitable central opening to allow the passage there through of a valve-stem 5. Valve-stem 5 terminates at its inner end in a screw threaded 7 ortion 6 adjacent to which is a collar or budbr 7. A washer 8 provided with a central opening to admit the portion 6 rests against buffer 7 and is held thereto by a circular nut 9 of a diameter equal to the bore of the admission end of barrel 1, said nut being provided with a central opening threaded to engage the threaded portion 6 of the valve-stem and being further provided around its circumference with spaced recesses 10 to permit a free flow of the water. The nut 9 is made circular in form and of a diameter equal to the diameter of the bore of the barrel 1 so as to act as a guide for valve-stem 5. 5 is threaded to engage the threaded recess in cylindrical cap 11 which works through an opening provided in screw-cap 12 which engages the head end of barrel 1.
Surrounding valve-stem 5 and confined within the chamber formed between aforementioned partition 4: and screw-cap 12 is a resilient member, preferably a coiled spring, 13 which is compressed by cap 11 when the valve-stem is thrust inwardly.
To the upper portion of barrel 1 and near the outer end thereof is )ivoted a lever 14, provided with an upstanc ing hand-grip 15, of any suitable form, and with a downwardly extending arm 16 terminating adjacent the mouth of discharge-nozzle 2 in a suitable enlarged engaging portion 17 Lover 14 is further provided with a suitable curved or bent finger 18, preferably cast integral therewith, adapted to engage the end of cap 11 for the purpose of operating val vestem 5.
In practice my invention is operated in the following manner: IVhen it is desired to draw water the hand grip 15 is seized and drawn forward or, if desired, the edge of the receptacle to be filled is pressed against portion 17, causing lever 14 to oscillate upon its pivot and throwing the end of finger 18 inwardly against cap 11 causing an inward thrust of the valve-stem and consequent opening of the valve. When the lever 15 released the expanding of spring 13 causes the valve to be reseated and the flow of water out off.
I/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In combination with a spigot body, an auton'iatically reseating valve therein, a lever, provided with an upstanding hand gripping portion, pivotally connected with the upper portion of said body, a downwardly extending arm integral with said lever and terminating near the nozzle of said spigot in an enlarged vessel engaging portion and means carried by said lever for operating said valve.
