UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC E. PALMER, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE I. E. PALMER 00., OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
COUCH-HAMMOGK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2'7, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Couch Hammocks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to couch hammocks. In order that the principle of the invention may readily be understood, I have disclosed certain types thereof in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation partially in vertical section and partially broken away, of a couch hammock embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of one corner of the hammock shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and representing means for attaching the upper edge of the upstanding side of the hammock body to the mattress; Fig. 4 is a detail in vertical transverse section of the construction shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 representing a slightly modified form of the invention shown in said former figure; and Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig. 4 of the construction shown in Fig. 5.
It is desirable in couch hammocks to employ a minimum amount of hammock cloth. Therefore, in Figs. 1 and 2, I have shown an exceedingly simple form of couch hammock and composed merely of suspension ends attached to the frame and upstanding sides also attached to the frame and distinct from but preferably detachably secured t0 the suspension ends.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the frame is composed of end members 1 and side members 2 secured permanently or detachably in suitable manner. The frame is provided with a seating which may be of wire, cloth or rope. I have here shown a wire seating 3 having end springs 4, any suitable means being employed to connect the lateral edges of the seating to the side members of the frame. The hammock is provided with suspension ends 5 having clue cords or other means adapted to be attached to an overhead support. Said suspension ends 5 are attached to the end members 1 of the frame in any suitable manner, as by providing said suspension ends with pockets 6 having therein supporting strips 7 secured by screws 8 or otherwise to the frame. I provide upstanding sides 9 of suitable height and attach said sides to the frame, and preferably to the under face of the side members 2 thereof, as by providing said sides 9 with pockets wherein are su porting strips similar, it may be, to t e strip 7 within the pocket 6 of the sus ension ends. Said strips may be detacha ly secured to the side members 2 and may extend substantially the entire length of the latter, but are preferably cut away at the ends to afford room for the suspension strips 7, which preferably extend the entire width of the frame. Said upstanding sides 9 are wholly separate from the suspension ends 5, but are preferably detachably secured thereto by means of lacing 9' or in any other suitable way. If desired, I may employ corner brackets of the general type shown in my Patent No. 944,814. Preferably a mattress is employed in the type of my invention shown in Fig. 1. It is apparent that the couch hammock shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is of exceedingly simple construction. The cloth thereof comprises merely the suspension ends 5--5 and separate upstanding sides 99.
It it highly desirable that a couch hammock having upstanding sides be provided with means to prevent sagging of said sides. In my Patent N 0. 944,814, above referred to, I have provided corner brackets furnishing well defined corners and preventing sagging of said sides. In Figs. 3 and 4, I have provided other means for preventing the sagging of the upstandin sides. In said figure, the mattress is indicated at 10, this resting upon the seating of a suitable type. The hammock body itself may be of any suitable type; that is to say, it may be of the eneral type shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or 0 some type wherein the hammock body is continuous from end to end, as, for example, the well-known Gloucester type. The hammock shown in said Figs. 3 and 4, is provided with upstanding sides 11, which may be, if desired, separate from the suspension ends or the other parts of the hammock body, or may be continuous therewith as in the said Gloucester type, or as in other types of hammocks. Preferably the ends of said upstanding sides 11 are attached to the suspension ends 5 by lacing 12.
In order to prevent sagging of the upstandmg sldes 11, I secure 111 any suitable manner the upper edges of sald upstanding sides 11 to the mattress. The said sides may means for attaching the upstanding sides to r the mattress and consisting of gromets 13 provided in the upper edges of said sides and at adjacent points in the mattress and passthrough said gromets short pieces of lac ing 1%. In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a slightly difierent means for attaching the said upstanding sides 11 to the mattress 10 and consisting of a cord 15 laced in and out through gromets 16 provided in the said upstanding sides and in the mattress. It is apparent that any other means may be employed to secure the upstanding sides of the hammock body to the mattress and that When so secured sagging of the sides is prevented. Moreover, the securing means serves as means to position or hold in place the mattress and prevents displacement thereof with respect to the frame and the hammock body. It is apparent that the means for securing the upstanding sides to the mattress is not dependent upon the type of hammock-body or frame employed, but
may be utilized in any couch hammock wherein upstanding hammock sides are employed.
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
1. A couch hammock comprising in com bination a frame having longitudinal and end members, suspension ends of textile material transversely connected to said frame at its ends, upstanding side strips or edge pieces of textile material distinct from said. suspension ends but adapted to be connected thereto and supported thereby, said side strips or edge pieces being secured to and upstanding from the longitudinal members its members, whereby a substantial saving of material is effected, a seating secured to said frame and a mattress superposed upon said seating and frame and positioned by said suspension ends and upstanding edge pieces.
2. A couch hammock comprising in combination a frame composed of side and end members, suspension ends therefor, 'a mattress supported upon said frame, the said hammock having upstanding sides of teX- tile material extending along the sides of said frame, and means detachably to connect the upper edges of said upstanding sides to the upper portion of the mattress.
3. A couch hammock comprising in combination a frame composed of side and end members, a seating therefor, a mattress supported upon said seating, a hammock body underlying said frame and seating and having suspension ends, said hammock body having upstanding sides, and means to connect said upstanding sides to the upper portion of the mattress.
4. A couch hammock comprising in combination a frame composed of side and end members, a seating therefor, a mattress supported upon said seating, a hammock body underlying said frame and seating and ham ing suspension ends, said hammock body having upstanding sides laced to said suspension ends, and cletachably secured to the upper portion of the mattress.
5. A couch hammock comprising in combination a frame having suspension ends, a mattress supported upon said frame, said hammock having upstanding sides of textile material extending along the sides of said frame, and means to connect said upstand-- ing sides to the mattress.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of tWo subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC E. PALMER.
