To all Iwhom 'it may comm.'-
Beit known that we, JAMES vH. SPENCER and JOHN SIMPsoN, citizensof the United States, and residents of Salina, in the county of Saline, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lift-ing Devices, of which the. following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in lifting devices', .and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to produce a device especially adapted for lifting forms in reinforced concrete construction. and which will indicate the extent of the lift.
`Referring tothe drawings forming a part hereof: Figure 1 is a vertical section of theimprovement; Fig. 2 is a front view; Fig. 3 1s a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; F ig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; an 5-5 and 6 6, respectively, of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings the form consists of a frame composed of T-sha ed side bars which are connected near their tops by blocks 2, the said blocks being supported by angle brackets 3, which are arranged above and below the blocks at each end, as shown in Fig. 2, and secured to the side bars by rivets or bolts 4. Above and below the blocks 2'the side bars are connected by bolts 5, which extend through openings 1n the side bars, and are engaged by nuts 6, the blocks acting as spacing blocks to retain the side bars in spaced relation. The plates 7 composing the form are connected to the side'members in any suitableor desired manner. The concrete 8 is placed in the forms in any suitable manner after the reinforcing rods 8a have beenplaoed, and the lifting mechanism to be described is supported on the blocks and engages the rods t-o lift the forms and to support the forms while the concrete is being placed. The said mechanism comprises a pipe 9, which fits slidingly on the rod, andthe pipe is aduated, as shown at 10, 4as is also the ro as shown at 11. The pipe-is connected to the lower block by means of an eye 12, Whichencircles the pipe, and is provided with a threaded stem 13 passing through the block and engagedv by a nut 14.

loosely through the opening, but when the dog is rocked as shown in Fig. l the edges -of the opening grip the pipe. A finger or indicator 21 is secured to theupper block by one of the bolts 16, 'and coperateswith the graduations on the pipe. f
A lever 22 is pivoted between the lugs 17 below the lever 18, and the said lever is pro vided with a socket 23 forreceiving a bar. A pair of links 24 are ivoted to the lever, one on each side thereof the lower end of the links is pivoted a lower dog. The lower dog consists ofv spaced bars 26 arranged outside of the links and pivotby a pin 25, and to ally connected thereto by a pin, 27, and on each side of the pipe isarranged a gripping jaw 28 and 29. The jaw 28 is concaved from side to side, as shown at 30 in Fig. 6, and supported by a pin 31, and the jaw 28 is arranged on the p1n 27 between the links 24.
A. weight 32 in the shape of a roller is journaled between the ends of the bars 26 on a bolt 33, the weight acting to normally retain the bars in the position shown in Fig. 1. The upper end of the pipe 9 is threaded, as at 34, and a sleeve 35 is threaded thereon, and two set-screws 36 are threaded through the sleeve into engagement with the rod.
A dog 37 is pivoted in a slot 38 of the sleeve 'on a pin 39and the inner end of the dog is cam-shaped, as shown at y40, so that when the dog is in the position shown' in Fig. 1 the rod is firmly gripped between the dog and the set-screws. The pipe is lslidable on the rod, and by adjusting the set-screws 36 thepipe may be used lon smaller rods.
In operation the lifting devices are ar-| ranged at suitable intervals, and the4 form vis leveled by means of the said devices, and when leveled it is locked in place. When the form is to be lifted the lever 22 is lifted as indicated in Fig. 1. The lifting of the lever moves the bars 26 into substantially horizontal position, thus releasing the gripping jaws. AThe upward movement of the lever does not offset the dog 18, the lever .passing between the arms of the fork, and
'moved upward and grip the pipe at a higher point. swinging fulcrum. When the frame reaches justed to proper height the dog is swung downward to llock the pipe in place. The form may be made of any convenient length and by operating thev lifting ldevices in unison it may be lifted bodily until the top of the reinforcing framework is reached.
We claim:
1. A form composed of spaced parallel side bars, bolts connecting the bars, upper and lower'blocks between the bars for retaining them in spaced relation, a pipe adapted to encircle a reinforcing rod and ipe, a dog set-screws threaded through the sleeve forl engaging the rod, a dog pivoted to the upper block and having an opening through which the pipe passes, a pair of bars adjacent to the lower block and between which the pipe passes, oppositely arranged gripping jaws on the bars, a Weight on the bars for `swinging the saine to retain the jaws in per block, and links connecting said lever l to the bars. i

3. A device of the character specified, comprising a frame for connection with the mold, a pipe adapted to receive and slide upon a reinforcing rod, means at the top of the pipe for locking the said pipe to the rod, and upper and lower dogs pivoted on the frame and normally engaging the pipe.
