To all whom it may concern:
Be it 'lrnown that 1, CHARLES M. F EIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful improvements in Trolley-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
The present inventionrelates to improvements in trolley stands, and comprehends, generally, the production of a dust-proof and water-tight device of that type capable ofsclfloilihg, this object being attained by the construction of the top member of the device in such a manner as to completely inclose the bearing portions of the bottom member, said members being further so c0nstructed and arranged with respect to each other that, as a result, intcrcommunicating oilwells and passages are produced, thereby maintaining all of thebearing surfaces in a state of constant lubrlcation.
A structural embodiment of the invention As shown in said drawing, the stand is composed of two essential elements, namely,
a top member or cap, designated in a general manner by the letter A, and a bottom mem-- her or base similarly designated by the letter B, the former member carrying the pole socket C and compression spring D which may be of any conventional or preferred type. The base B comprises a dished plate 3 provided with a centrally-located bearing post a and an upstanding annular wall or flange 5 arranged concentrically of and in spaced relation to post 4. In the construc tion illustrated, the flange 5 is formed integral with plate 3, and the bearing post is constituted by a pin riveted atits lower end to said plate, as shown in Fig. 1. Cap A is likewise preferably of integral construction, 7
and is rotatably mounted upon base B. It is formed with spaced inner and outer annular walls 6 and 7 concentrically arranged and depending vertically from the crown portion 8. the latter having an axial aperture through which-passes the connecting bolt 9. he threaded lower portion of this bolt seats in an opening in post 1-, and its enlarged head in a recess in the cap crown.
In assembling the parts, the cap is fitted upon the base in such a manner that the post is received within the inner wall 6, and the flange 5 within the space between the latter and the outer wall 7, a washer 10 being intcrposed between the upper end of said post -and the under faceoi thecrown S. (See Fig. 1.) By reason of this arrangement, .it will be seen that the cap is supported en tirely upon the bearing post, and is capable of a .free rotary movement thereon, the upper edge of said flange terminating short the walls 6 and 7, while the lower edges of said .walls in turn terminate short of the bottom wall of the dished base. As a result, friction between the moving parts is obviated at the points specified. To further this result, and to provide for continuous lubrication of said parts, the same are so proportioned withrespect to reach other that an annular chamber 11 is produced between the inner surface of wall (3 and the peripheral surface of thepost, and similar chainbers 12 and 13 between the inner and outer surfaces of flange 5 and the adjacent surfaces of the walls 6 and 7, the latter chambers communicating with each other at their upper ends by way of the conduit 14, (produced by the above-mentioned arrangement of flange 5), while the chambcrslQ and 11 have commui'iication with each other at their lower ends through the similarly produced conduit 15. Additional communication between the chambers 12 and 11 is ailorded by a series of horizontal ports 16 formed through wall 6. The chamber 12 thus constitutes an oil well, and may be filled through a port 17 formed in the crown 8, this port being normally closed by a cover plate 18 mounted on the outer face of said crown and connected thereto by a screw or similar device 19 which is set into the head of bolt 9. Cover 18 is formed with a port 20 which is brought into registration with the port 17 when it becomes necessary to fill the well. The chamber 11 is designed to receive a series of anti-friction bearings 21, herein shown as in the form of vertically arranged rollers which are co-extcnsive in tion of post t, the rounded lower ends of said rollers resting upon the dished portion of the base..-
' The'height of the oilwell is such that it extends an appreciable distance above the post top and the Washer 10, as shown in Fig. 1, and since said well connnunicates with the chamber 11 through the conduit 15 i and ports 16, the rollers, the post and the inner surface of the adjacent wall 6 will be maintained in a state of continuous lubrication at all times. The production of said conduit will, moreover, enable any grit contained in the oil to settle thereinte, and since ment thereof without occasioning the pro-. duction of fr ction between it and the body.
