Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. *7, 1914:.
Application filed October 16, 1913. Serial No. 795,613.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHANN EBERWEIN, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at North Tonawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Leveling Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to self leveling tables and has for its object to provide a table of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means for maintaining the table top level when the support for the table tilts in any direction.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a self-leveling table which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eficient and convenient in its use, automatic in the leveling action for the table top, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel con struction, combination'and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a self-leveling table in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, Fig. 3 is a section on line X-X Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, and Fig. 4 is a section on line YY Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a base which is circular in contour and fixedly secured to a support by holdfast de' vices 2. Rigidly secured, at their lower ends to the upper face of the base 1, at the marginal portion thereof, is a series of upwardly and inwardly extending inclined supporting members 3, having their upper ends rigidly secured to the periphery of an annular support at which is formed with a concave seat 5.
Secured to the upper face of the base 1 at the marginal portion thereof, is a series of equally spaced socket forming members 6.
Each of the members 6 has its top formed with a semi-circular recess 7 constituting a socket and each of said members at its bottom is provided with an annular flange 8 through which extends holdfast devices for securing the member rigidly to the base. The periphery of each of the members 6 is threaded and engaging with said threads is a retaining cap 10 for a spherical bearing 11, the latter being provided with a stem 12, which projects through an opening 13 in the cap 10 and is formed integral with a bored rod 14:, the bore in the latter being indicated at 15 and which constitutes a guideway for a vertically movable guide member 16, the latter being slotted, as at 18 and extending through the slot 18 is a stop pin 19, which is fixedly secured to the rod leiE at the top thereof. The socket forming members 6, caps 10 and spherical bearings 11 provide universal joint connections between the rods 14 and the base 1.
The reference character 20 denotes a circular table top having secured to the mar ginal portion of its lower face a series of socket forming members 21 which are equally spaced with respect to each other and. each of which has its lower face provided with a semi-spherical recess 22 which constitutes a socket. The periphery of each of the members 21 is threaded and engaging with said threads is a retaining cap 23 for a spherical bearing 24, the latter being provided with a stem 25 which is formed integral with a guide member 16. The socket forming members 21, caps 23, spherical bearings 21 and stems 25 form universal joint connections between the guide members 16 and the table top.
Mounted upon the seat 5 and depending above and below the support 4 is a hollow semi-oval shaped support 26 which has connected to its bottom a stem 27 having depending therefrom a weight 28 for counterbalancing the support 26 whereby the table top 20 is maintained level when the base shifts or tilts.
What I claim is A self-leveling table comprising a sta tionary base, a table top, a counter-balanced shiftable element fixed to and depending from said table top, a support provided with a seat for said element, supporting members fixed to the base and secured to said support, rods provided with bores constituting guide-ways, vertically movable guide members extending in said guide- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature Ways, means carried by the rods and extendin the presence of tWo Witnesses.
