ORE-FURNACE.
vSpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application led January 15, 1910. Serial No. 538,220.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ore-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to roasting furnaces and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation; Fig. 2 a section along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by like characters in all the drawings.
The furnace A provided with lire boxes A1, grates A2, fire doors A3, ash pit At, ash pit doors A5, has the centrally located flue B which is provided at its bottom with the receiving chamber B1 and a clean out door B2. The openings C arranged helically and ascending about the wall of the flue B arel closed by the doors C2 having in connection shelves C3 extending from the wall of the flue approximately half way across it. The stairway D ascending helically about the outside of the flue allows access to the holes C. The platform D1 about the top of the flue is reached by the staircase D. rihe openings E in the top El of the iiue having the covers E2 may be used to feed the furnace. The pipe F leads from the top of the Hue to the condensing chamber F1, which chamber is surrounded by water jacket F2 having the cold water inlet F3 and hot water outlet Ft. The pipe G provides an outlet from the condensing chamber for the gases.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: When fire is started in the fire boxes, the hot gases pass up through the flue and out through the condensing chamber to the atmosphere. Ore is fed in through the openings in the top of the flue and falls upon the shelves about the wall. These shelves are helically arranged in such manner that ore falling from any one shelf falls upon a lower shelf and cannot by an possibility fall clear to the bottom of the ue. During the process of roasting, theI ore is scraped from the successive shelves by means of implements in the wall and falls to a lower shelf. This process is continued until the ore finally is discharged in the receiving chamber in the bottom of the flue from which the roasted ore may be withdrawn. The hot gases which pass into the condensing chamber are condensed and the cool gases allowed to pass ofi' into the atmosphere.
I claim:
1. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, and a series of horizont-al overhanging helically arranged separated shelves on the inside of the flue.
2. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, and a series of overhanging helically arranged separated shelves of refractory material on the inside of the flue. Y 3. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a combustion chamber connected -so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, a series of overhanging separated shelves on the inside kof the flue, and an opening associated with each shelf whereby access can be had to it from the outside of the flue.
4. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a combustion chamber con nected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, a series of overhanging helically arranged separated shelves on the inside of the flue, and an opening associated with each shelf whereby access can be had to it from the outside of the flue.
5. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, a series of overhanging separated shelves of refractory material on the inside of the flue, and an opening associated with each shelf whereby access can be had to it from the outside of the flue.
6. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical iue, a combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, a series of overhanging helically arranged separated shelves of refractory material on the inside of the flue, and an opening associated with each shelf whereby access can be had to it from the outside of the flue.
7 An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, a series of overhanging separated ico bottom, a series of overhanging helically` arranged separated shelves o'n the inside of the flue, an opening associated with each shelf whereby access can be had 'to it freni 'the outside lof the "fine, anda platform associated with each such opening on the exterior of the flue.
9. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a 'combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, a series vof 'overhanging separated shelves of refractory material on the inside ofthe flue, an opening associated with each shelf whereby access can be had to it from the outside/of the flue, and a platform associated with eachsuch opening on the exterior of the flue.
10. An ore roasting furnace comprisinga vertical flue, a combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, a series .of overhanging helically arranged separated shelves of refractory 'material on the inside of the iiue, an opening associated with each shelf whereby access can be 'had to it from the outside of the liue,
and a platform associated with each such opening on the exterior of the flue.
11. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical Hue, a combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom, a series of overhanging separated shelves on the inside of the flue, a door through the flue associated with each such shelf, and a spiral stairway about t-he flue on the exterior thereof to give access to such doors.
12. An o re roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a combustion chamber ,connectedso as to discharge thereinto at thebottom, a series of 'overhanging separated shelves on 'the inside of the flue, a door through the flue associated with each such shelf, a helical stairway about the flue on `the exterior thereof to give access to such doors, a fluid pipe leading from the vtop of the Hue, and a condenserinto which it discharges.`
13. An ore roasting furnace comprising a vertical flue, a combustion chamber connected so as to discharge thereinto at the bottom and a series of overhanging 'separated shelves on the inside of the lflue, said -shelves helically arranged the're'about so as to leave no continuous lvertical opening through the entire length of the flue,
