ELECTRIC SWITCH.

Be it known that I, ROY D. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county of York, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Switches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electric switches and more especially to a form of switch adapted to connect a pair of supply mains with the wires of any one of a series of branch circuits.
One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of switches of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide a form of switch in which the blades may not only be reversed from one side to the other of the switch but may also be swung around a center to assume various positions.
Vith the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of abase having a series of pairs of contact members arranged in spaced relation around the base, and an improved form of turn-table carrying a double pole knife switch.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Fignre 1 is a plan view of a switch constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 10 indicates the base and this base is preferably of hard wood, rubber or other suitable insulating material. The base is also preferably circular in form. Fixed upon this base is a contact ring 11, the ring being concentric with the base. This ring is held to the base by suitable screws one of which, as indicated at 12, extends through the base and is provided with a nut and washer on its lower end. Adjaeent the periphery of the base 10 is a main line contact post 13 and a wire 14 connects the main line contact post 13 with the screw Specification of Letters Patent.

12 so that the contact ring 11 is in electric communication with the post 13. Upon the ring 11 is a turn-table ring 15 having a bar 16 of insulating material extending diametrically thereacross. This bar 16 is provided with a suitable bushing 1'7 in its center and through the bushing and a centrally disposed opening in the base 10 extends a center pin 18 which is connected to a main line binding post 19 by a wire 20. On the upper end of this pin 18 is carried a washer 21 above which is a nut 22 and a binding nut 23. Surrounding the pin 18 between the washer 21 and the bushing 17 is a spring 24. By means of this construction the turn-table 15 is held centrally upon the base so that it can be revolved on the ring 11.
The turn-table is to be of conducting material and on one end of the bar 16 is secured a slotted support 25 which is electrically connected to the turn-table 15 and secured firmly on the bar 16 by a screw 26. Upon the other end of the bar 16 is a similar support 27 which is provided with a threaded screw 28 extending only into the bar 16 so that this support 27 is insulated from the turn-table 15. Beneath the support 27 is one end of a metallic strip 29 the opposite end whereof is held between the washer 21 and nut 22. From the construction just described it will be seen that the arrangement is such that the two supports 25 and 27 are insulated from each other and that they are electrically connected respectively to the binding posts 13 and 19. Mounted in the supports 25 and 27 are the blades 30 of a two pole knife switch provided with the usual cross bar 31 and operating handle 32.
Around the periphery of the base 10 are arranged pairs of contact members 33 provided with the usual binding screws 34 to connect branch circuit wires to the contact. These contacts are so arranged that each pair will be diametrically opposed to another pair in the preferred form, this being the case whenever an even number of pairs is used. This will, of course, be impossible when an uneven number of pairs are used.
The knife switch is so connected to the supports 25 and 27 that it can be revolved on these supports from one side of the base to the other without turning the turn-table, this being accomplished simply by lifting the handle 32 and moving it through an arc of about 180 degrees. This permits, where an even number of pairs of contacts are used,
the connection of the opposite pairs by simply throwing the knife switch from one side of the base to the other. If one of the remainder of the pairs of contacts is to be connected the handle 32 is raised and the knife switch swung around on the pivot pin efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In an electric switch, a base, a fixed contact ring mounted on said base, a turntable carried on said ring and in electrical contact therewith, a switch blade support carried on said turn-table and electrically connected to said turn-table, a second switch blade support carried on said turn-table and insulated therefrom, a fixed contact post, an electric connection between the fixed contact post and the second support, a pair of knife blades pivoted tosaid supports, and a plurality of pairs of contacts arranged around said turn-table and adapted to be engaged by said knife blades.
2. In a device of the kind described, a
having one end bearing against the bar and l the other end against said screws, a knife blade support mounted on said bar and electrically connected to said turn-table ring, a second knife blade support mounted on said bar and insulated from said turn-table ring, an electric connection between the second support and the center pin, a second line wire binding post, a wire connecting the center pin and second main line binding post, a double blade knife switch mounted in said supports, and a series of spaced contacts arranged in pairs around the base and adapted to be engaged by said knife switch.
