To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WESTER- nnox, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming par of this specification.
My invention relates to a container designed for use in lieu of sheet metal boxes and sheet metal cans for holding various commodities and from which the commodities are dispensed by merchants. Containers of this description involve considerable expense in their manufacture and they are, therefore, employed by the wholesale merchant for the purpose of transporting commodities to the retail merchant to be used until they have been emptied, after which they are to be returned to the wholesale merchant to be refilled. It is a well known fact that where such containers are made of tin, as they commonly are, they become battered and otherwise injured during transportation and while in the hands of retail merchants, so that the wholesaler is frequently put to the expense of having the containers repaired, and very frequently suffers entire loss of the containers by their being rendered unfit for further service when they are returned from the retail merchant following one or two shipments of merchandise to him in the containers.
\Vith the foregoing in view, the object of my present invention is the production of a container that will withstand a greater amount of rough usage than the ordinary sheet metal containers and consequently of greater longevity, and which may be produced at approximately the same cost as that involved in the manufacture of sheet metal containers for like service.
Another object of my invention is to provide a container of the kind referred to with a substantial means by which the lid may be held in a closed position through the medium of a seal.

In the accompanying drawings :A designates the front wall, A- the back wall, B one of the side walls, C the bottom, D a fixed cover section, and E the hinged cover section or lid of my container. The back wallA is constructed similar to the front wall A.
The front wall A comprises a panel- 1 that is of some other material than sheet metal, preferably wood, and channel side strips 2, of sheet metal, a bottom sheet metal channel strip 3, and a top sheet metal channel strip 4, all of said channel strips being fitted to the panel 1 so as to inclose its edges and constitute binding members therefor.
The side walls B comprise panels 5 similar to the panel 1, sheet metal channel side strips 6, a sheet metal channel bottom strip 7 and a sheet metal channel top strip 8,having the same functions as the channel strip of the front wall.
The bottom 0 of my container comprises a panel 9 of material similar to that of which the panels of the wall of the container are made and edge sheet metal channel strips 10 fitted to said panel. Two or more of the channel strips of the bottom are provided with beads 11 extending downwardly from their bottom portions and which serve as feet to support the container, in order that the greatest area of the bottom of the container may be upheld from contact with a floor or shelf on which the container is placed when in use, this being important in view of the bottom panel being of wood or similar material that is liable to absorb moisture in the event of the container resting upon a damp surface.
The fixed cover section D comprises a panel 12, of material similar to that of which the panels previously referred to are made, a sheet metal lining 15 that is bent upwardly at the side edges and then outwardly, producing side flanges 15 that overlie the side walls of the container and at the rear edge of the panel to produce a top rear flange 14. 13 are angular side strips, each having a wing interposed between the upturned side portion of the lining 15 and the adjacent side edge of the panel 12 and a wing resting on the panel. These strips are connected to the rear flange l t and the strip 14: by suitable means, such as solder. The lining 15 is bent upwardly at the front edge of the panel 12. Immediately back of this front turned up portion of the lining. is; an angular strip 14 that connects the side flanges 13 at the top of the section D and one wing. 5 of which is interposed between the panel 12 and the front turned up portion of the lining 15.
The hinged cover section or lid E comprises a panel 16 similar to the other panels herein mentioned and a sheet metal lining 17 which is bent upwardly to embrace the rear edge of the panel: 1 6': and then downwardly onto said. panel toproduce a rear flange 19, the

Having now described the construction of my container in general, I will-proceed with the description of the devices provided for sealing the lid of the container in a closed position. A container comprising: a: body, a lid 1 having a fixed cover section provided with a lining bent upwardly at the sides and outwardly, producing flanges overlying the side walls of the body, and also bent upwardly at the front edge and provided with ears, and a hinged cover section provided with a lining bent upwardly at the sides and outwardly, producing flanges overlying the side walls of the body, and also bent upwardly at the front edge, and provided with a flange overlying the front wall, the leaves between the cover sections, and a pintle rod connecting the ears and the leaves.
2. A container comprising a body having a lining extended to the top of the walls, bent downwardly upon itself and then inwardly to provide a seat for a lid.
3. A container, comprising a body having a front wall provided with a top member containing elongated apertures, a lid hinged to said body and having a front flange provided with elongated apertures for registration with the apertures in the top member of said front wall, and seal receiving members slidably arranged in the top member of said front wall and extending through the apertures therein, the seal receiving members being arranged for passage through the apertures in the flange of said lid to be shifted over said flange.
4. A container, comprising abody having a front wall provided with a top member containing elongated apertures, a lid hinged to said body and having a front flange provided with elongated apertures for registra' tion with the apertures in the top member of said front wall, and seal receiving members slidably arranged in the top member of said front wall and extending through the apertures therein, the seal receiving members being arranged for passage through the apertures in the flange of said lid to be shifted over said flange, and being provided with loops at their facing ends.
5. A container, comprising a body having a front Wall provided with a top member containing elongated apertures, a lid hinged to said body and having a front flange provided with elongated apertures for registration with the apertures in the top member of said front wall, and seal receiving members slidably arranged in the top member of said front wall and extending through the apertures therein, the seal receiving members being arranged for passage through the apertures in the flange of said lid to be shifted over said flange, and being provided with loops at their inner and facing ends and upturned arms at their outer ends.
