To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that i, Lanni'x Srown, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at- Fleasant View, in the county oi' i/Vhitley and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful improvement in Dispensing Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being` had to the accompanying drawing.
My improvement relates particularly to a device which is to constitute a detachable or removable spout and cover for the discharge opening o-r port of dispensing` receptacles.
rlhe improvement is specially designed for use ou metallic cans containing blasting powder, such cans being used by miners to ll smaller receptacles or cartridges, from time to time.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan illustrating my improvement applied to the discharge opening or port in the head ot the powder can; Fig. 2 is a bottom view of my apparatus; Fig. 3 is a section through said device and the adjacent portion et the head of the powder can; Fig. et is a similar section showing a tunnel combined with the other members of the device.
Powder cans used for handling` blasting powder in bulk are usually formed of sheet metal and with flat ends or heads, one of said ends having a port or discharge opening through which the powder is discharged and a flat. gate being provided for covering said port. it is desirable, almost essential, that the ends ot such cans be flat, in order thatthe cans may be set on their ends and upon each other. My improved device is applied to said port after the removal of said gate.
ln the drawings, l is a part of a can end or head and 2 is the usual circular port, Upon said end .is set the tubular spout, 3, having at its base a lateral flange, 1L, which is extended at one point to form a horizontal tongue, 5. rlhe inner base diameter of said spout is preferably the same as the diameter of said port. To the inner tace of the base portion of the wall of the spout is applied a metal strip,G,which extends below said base and thence laterally and outward to form a. tongue, T, tar enough below the flange, et, to allow the end wall, l, of the can to extend between said flange and said tongue. Upon the end wall, l, is secured a plate, 8, having a bent over ear, 8, which is directed toward the port, 2, and is far enough above said plate to extend over and bind upon the tongue,
When 'the spout is to be attached, it is placed over the port, 2, inclined suiiiciently to allow the tongue, 7', to enter the port. Then the spout is brought into the upright position directly over the port and rotated sufficiently to wedge the tongue, 5, beneath the ear, 8', whereby the spout becomes firmly secured. icap, 9, fits removably over the upper end of said spout and serves to close the port, 2, excepting when powder is to be poured from the can. At such times, said cap is removed, and the can tilted and the spout directed into the receptacle which is to receive the charge of powder. The pouring of powder from said spout into another receptacle having a relatively small mouth may be facilitated by the use of a funnel, 10, such as is shown in Fig. 4, said funnel being a tapering tube adapted to have its larger end tit around the spout, 3, and to have its smaller end receive the cap, 9, when no powder is being taken from the can, this manner ot' disposing of said funnel during non-use being adopted for the purpose ot' providing a secure and definite place for stowing the funnel.
Ordinary explosive powder cans now in use have two ears, 8', the same being located at opposite sides of the port to receive a heretofore-used disk-form gate for closing said port.. Hence my improved spout and closing device is adapted for use upon said cans without modification ot the latter. Thus, for the marketing of my improve ment, it is necessary to manufacture only two small sheet metal parts, if the funnel, l0, is not used; or three such parts, it said funnel is to be used.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a device of the nature described, the combination of a spout adapted to seat around a port in the wall ot' a receptacle and having a tongue adapted to enter said port and extend beneath said wall and having another tongue .located opposite the lirstmentioned tongue and adapted to extend into engagement with a member located upon the outer side of said wall adjacent said port.
2. In a device of the nature described, the combination of a cap and a spout, said cap being adapted to seat upon said spout and said spout being adapted to seat around a port in the Wall of a receptacle and having a tongue adapted to enter said port and extend beneath said Wall and having another tongue located opposite the lirst mentioned tongue and adapted to extend into engagement With a member located upon the outer side of said Wall adjacent said port.
3. ln a device of the nature described, the combination of a spout, a funnel, and a cap, said funnel being adapted to seat upon said spout and said cap being adapted to seat upon said funnel, and said spout being adapted to seat around a port in the ivall of a receptacle and having a tongue adapted to enter said port and extend beneath said Wall and having another' tongue located opposite the first-mentioned tongue and adapted to extend into engagement with a member located upon the outer side of said Wall adjacent said port.
4. In a device of the nature described, the
combination of a spout adapted to seat around a port in the Wall of a receptacle and having a flange around its base and having a tongue adapted to enter said port and extend beneath said Wall and having another tongue located opposite the first-mentioned tongue and adapted to extend into engagement with a member located upon the outer Side of said Wall adjacent said port.
5. In a device of the nature described, the combination ot a cap and a spout, said cap being adapted to seat upon said spout and said spout being adapted to seat around a port in the Wall of a receptacle and having a flange at its base and having a tongue adapted to enter said port and extend beneath said Wall and having another tongue located opposite the lirst-inentioned tongue and adapted to extend into engagement With a member located upon the outer side of said ivall adjacent said port.
G. ln a device of the nature described, the combination oit a cap, a funnel, and a spout, said tunnel being adapted to seat upon said spout and said cap being adapted to seat upon said funnel, and said spout being adapted to seat around a portI in the ivall ot a receptacle and having a iiange at its base and having a tongue adapted to enter said port and extend beneath said Wall and having another tongue located opposite the rstmentioned tongue and adapted to extend into engagement With a member located upon the outer side of said Wall adjacent said port.
