Be it known that I, GnnconrSiMoN, a -citizen ofthe United States ot' America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny. and State ofPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which thel following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyingdrawing.
This invention relates" to swings, and especially to that type of swings used upon lawns, in parks and playgrounds, and the invention has for its object to provide a swinvthat can be easily and quickly operated by the occupantsthereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a swing constructed principally of metal, it .being preferable to usel ordinary gas pipe, for the vmain frame of the swing.
With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the inven-l tion consists of-the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

A swin in accordance with this invention embo ies two A-fralnes suitably braced and connected together and frointhese A- frames is suspended a carrier adapted to be oscillated between the A-fraines either by a movement of the occupants of the carrier or through the-medium of an operating lever arranged above the carrier. Two A-frames are em loyed, and -each frame comprises angular y disposed supports 1 having the lower ends thereof mounted in sockets 2 and provided with straps 3, said straps being connected by longitudinal tie rods 4. The u'p er ends of the supports l are provided wit coupling pieces 5 connected, as at 6, to coupling pieces' 7 carried by longitudinal' tie rods 8. The supports 1 adjacent to the upper ends thereof are provided with straps 9 and these straps are connected by angularly disposed tie rods l0 having turnbuckles11 whereby the rigidity of thetie rods can be increased.
The inner sides of the supports l adjacent to the coupling members 5 are provided with bearings 12, cach bearing being held in place by Ia clevis 13. In the bearings 12 are arranged anti-friction" balls 14 revolubly supporting the ends of rock shafts 15 journaled in said bearings. Mounted upon the rock shafts 15 contiguous to thc bearings 12 are hangers 1G and pivotally connected to said hangers, as at 17, are Suspension frames 18 having central off-set portions 19. The suspension frames 18 are connected by bars 19cx to the rock shafts 15 and the off-Set portions o said frames are braced by tie rods 20. The oit-set portions 19 are furthermore provided with hangers 21 and suspended from these hangers by rods 22 is a carrier 23 haring suitable seats 24. l The framesjl'S are provided with hangers ,25 and these hangers are connected by braces 26 to straps 27 slidably mounted upon the rods 22. V. The tie rods 8 of the A-frames are connected by a transverse plate 28, said `plate being secured to t-he tie rods by'clevises 29. The plate 28 intermediate the ends thereof is provided with a bearing 30 for a fulcrunied lever 31. One, end of the lever 31 is connected by a cable 32 to one of the suspension frames 1S, and the opposite end of the lever -is provided with an operating cable 83 passing over a sheave 34lrevolubly carried by the rock shaft 15 at the oit-set end of the swing from` the cable 32, the operating cable 33 extending downwurdl f in proximity to the carrier 23, whereby the occupants of. the carrier by pulling upon the operating cable33 can swing the carrier in one direction and by allowing the operating cable to become slack, the carrier will swing in the opposite direction. To facilitate this movement of the-'carrier, the operating lever 33 is connected by a coiled spring 35.
The oit-set portions 19 of. the suspension frames 18 are braced by longitudinal tie rods 36. y
From the foregoing it will be observed that a swing in accordance with this invention is exceedingly well braced, particularly the upper part thereof, which receives the stress and strain when the carrier is in operation.
