F all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAif A. BRADLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved ()perating Mechanism for Ore-Jigs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to ore jigs and more particularly to the gearing used for actuating certain movable parts thereof.
Stated more specifically, my invention comprehends a plurality of rocking shafts provided with tappets and connected together by links and cranks in such manner that the shafts rock in opposite directions, one group of tappets being raised while another group is lowered, the tappets playing upon plunger rods which are connected with the plunger-s for agitating the ore and the liquids with which the same is mixed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, showing my improved ore ji and particularly the gearing used for actuating the movable parts thereof; Fig. 2 is a view mainly in elevation but partly upon the section upon the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, and showing the rocking shafts mounted in their respective bearings and properly connected, for the purpose of actuating the plunger rods; and Fig. 8 is a vertical section on the line of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
At 4 is a framework and at 5 is a receptacle used for holding the ore and water or other liquid. The receptacle is provided with a cover 6 and extending through the latter are bearing sleeves 7, each provided at its top with an annular flange 7, the latter being sunken slightly into the cover 6 so as to afford a good seat for the bearing sleeve. Plunger rods 8 extend vertically through the bearing sleeves and mounted upon the lower ends of the plunger rods is a plunger 9 adapted to slide vertically within the receptacle.
At 10, 11, 12 (see Fig. 1) are supporting beams and mounted upon the latter is a cross beam 18. A base plate 14 is supported upon the cross beam and is provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

pedestals 15 extending upwardly. These pedestals are provided with bearings 16 and supported by these bearings is a shaft 17 provided with a cranked portion 17"-. That is to say, the shaft 17 is slightly bent so as to form a crank, as will be understood from Fig. 8. A bearing 18 containing a split ring bushing 19 is mounted upon the crank 17 and supports a stirrup 20, this stirrup being provided at its bottom with an eye 21, and a connecting rod 22 is threaded at its upper end and extends through this eye. Engaging the threaded portion of the connecting rod 22 and disposed upon opposite sides of the eye 21 are two nuts 28, 24 which are used to clamp the connecting rod 22 rigidly in relation to the stirrup 20. The connecting rod 22 extends through an opening 25 in the base plate.
At 26, 27, 28, 29 (see Fig. 2) are bearings, the bearings 27, 28 being cast integrally together for the purpose of securing proper rigidity and also of simplifying the construction. A rocking shaft 29 is journaled in the bearings 26, 27, and an arm 80 provided with a massive annular portion 80 is mounted rigidly upon the shaft 29. which arm, because it rocks with the shaft 29, I designate as a rocking arm. The rock ing arm 80 carries a crank pin 81 provided with an oil duct 81 whereby it is lubricated. Mounted rigidly upon the shaft 29 is another rocking arm 82. A link 88 is connected with the lower end of the rocking arm 82 by aid of a pivot pin 84, and for this purpose the link 88 is provided with enlarged end portions 88: A pivot pin 85 connects one of these end portions with another rocking arm 86, the latter being mounted upon a rocking shaft 87 disposed adjacent to the rocking shaft 29. A key 88 secures the rocking arm 86 rigidly in its position just described. Tappets 89 are, by aid of collars 40, secured rigidly upon the shaft 87. Similarly tappets 41 are, by aid of collars 42, mounted rigidly upon the shaft 29. The tappets 89 extend in a direction contrary to that in which the tappets 41 extend, all of the tappets, however, being approximately horizontal though capable of a limited vertical rocking movement. The plunger rods 8 are encircled by springs 47, and at their upper ends are provided with hollow cylindrical heads 48, into which are driven wooden pins 48 adapted to receive the impact of the tappets 41. Similarly the plunger rods 48 are provided with cylindrical heads 4L9, the structure of which is identical with that of the cylindrical heads as. The plunger rods 48 are encircled by springs 50. The plunger rods 8 being in alinement with the plunger rods 48, the cylindrical heads 43 are in alinement with the cylindrical heads 4L9. The plunger rods as support a plunger 9 in all respects similar to the plunger 9. The plungers 9, 9 are adjustable by aid of nuts 44;, 45, and below the nuts e5 are bearings for the upper ends of the springs 4;? and 50. Fixed and loose pulleys 51 and are mount ed upon the shaft 17 for the purpose of turning the same. Said shaft is also provided with a fly wheel 53.
The operation of my device is as follows: The parts being assembled as above described and ore being fed into the receptacle 6 in the manner heretofore employed, or in any manner desired, and the receptacle being filled with water or other suitable liquid, power is applied to the pulley 51. This turns the shaft 17, and as the cranked portion 17 actuated, the connecting rod 22, acting througl'l the rocking arm 30 causes the shaft 29 to rock. This shaft, acting through the rocking arm 32, link 33, and rocking arm 36, causes the other shaft 37 to rock, each of its movements, however, being in a direction opposite that of the corresponding movement of the shaft 29. The tappets 4:1, 39 are therefore rocked in unison, but in opposite directions. That is to say, as the tappets 111 descend, the tappets 39 ascend, and vice versa. The plungers 9, 9 are thus each alternately raised and lowered, one plunger rising as the other de seends. These plungers acting upon the liqaid and ore produce the jigging action desired. lVhenever one of the wooden plugs 4-3 becomes worn out, or battered to such an extent as to be useless, it is pulled out of its cylinder and a new plug substituted.

i9 is greatly reduced.
It will be noted that the up stroke of the plungers 9 9 is not caused directly by the tappe'ts, but rather by the automatic extension of the springs a7, 50. What the tappets do, therefore, is merely to depress the plunger rods 8, 48, as above described. The various rocking arms and the link so connect the shafts 29, 37 tog-ether and with adjacent movable parts that each tappet actuated by positive movemcmls.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A device of the character described, comprising" a pair of rocking shafts disposed parallel. with each other, tappets mounted rigidly upon one of said shafts and extend-- ing therefrom in a particular direetitm, tappets mounted rigidly upon the other shaft extending in a direction opposite the particular direction first mentioned, so that the free ends of said tappets are brought into approximate alinement, means for applying power to one of said rocking sh afts, cranks mounted upon the respective rocking shafts and extending therefrom at an angle to the general plane occupied by said tappets, and a pitman connected with each of said cranks for transmitting power across from one crank to another.
