To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST Pinon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at East liorwalk, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sprinklers adapt ed for general use as in laundries and families for sprinkling articles of clothing, bed linen, etc, before ironing, for sprinkling plants and wherever it is desired to scatter small drops of water or other fluid evenly, and the invention has for its object to pro vide a simple and inexpensive self-filling hand sprinkler adapted for general use, which will fill without appreciable loss of time and will hold the water or other fluid so that it will escape therefrom in small drops by movement of the sprinkler and which may be filled and used without wetting the hand.
IVith these and other objects in view I have devised the novel sprinkler of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing is a specification, reference characters being used to indicate the several parts:
Figure 1 is an elevation of my novel sprinkler, illustrating the mode of filling; Fig. 2 an elevation illustrating a modification in details of construction; and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of my novel sprinkler.
It is an important feature of the invention that the device is complete in itself and is without detachable parts.
The device comprises essentially a hollow metallic body, indicated by A, which is provided with small perforations 10 for filling and to permit escape of water when the sprinkler is moved about, and a handle B. The special design or configuration of the body is not of the essence of the invention, likewise it is unimportanthow it is made; for example, it may be drawn and formed from a disk of metal as brass, or it may be formed from a sheet of tin plate or brass with the edges soldered together.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 1, the bot tom and sides of the body are formed integral and the handle indicated specifically by 11 is turned from wood and is provided with a head or plug 12 which just fits into the open upper end of the body to which it is rigidly secured as by nails 13.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 2, the handle, specifically indicated by 1 1, is formed from a strip of relatively heavy sheet metal and is riveted to a cap 15 which is soldered or riveted to the upper end of the body. 16 denotes a metallic loop which is preferably riveted or soldered to the upper end of the body and serves as a handle for hanging the sprinkler when not in use or for hanging it for filling over the edge of a pail, pan or other receptacle, indicated by 17, for containing water or other fluid to be used in sprinkling.
The operation is as follows: The body is filled with water or other fluid to be used in sprinkling by simply submerging it in the fluid, atmospheric pressure causing the body to fill with water when submerged in about two seconds. The perforations 10 in the body permitthe fluid to enter freely under atmospheric pressure but are so small that the water or other fluid can only escape in small drops even when the sprinkler is moved about. In use in sprinkling clothes, the operator may hang the sprinkler over the edge of a receptacle containing water, as in Fig. 1, while arranging the clothes for sprinkling, and then perform the sprinkling operation and then replace the sprinkler in the water ready for another operation, thus keeping suliicient water in the sprinkler so that it will always be ready for use and no time will be lost in filling it.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
A self filling sprinkler comprising a cylinder having its entire periphery perforated, and an integral perforated bottom wall, a separate head permanently secured in the open end of said cylinder to form a closure therefor, a handle securedto said head, and a suspending hook secured to one end of said cylinder whereby the same may be suspended in a body of liquid to fill the sprinkler.
