VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatented Dec. 20, 1910.
Application filed February 19, 1910. Serial No. 544,730.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. DIRKES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ventilators, and it has relation more particularly to that class of such devices which are intended to be employed in combination with the windows of buildings, cars and the like to allow vitiated or foul air to escape and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which is simple in construction, efficient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which is capable of ready application to windows or other openings without pre senting an unsightly appearance and which, while facilitating the escape of vitiated or foul air, is adapted at the same time to effectually exclude the entrance of rain, dust, or cold air and also to prevent drafts and damage as might be caused by such entrance.
The invention consists in certain features of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to and as illustrated in the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the invention applied to a window. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention taken on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3, 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4c is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3 illustrating a modified form of the invention.
As illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the invention is constructed from two slender elongated parts or members 1', 1 which overlap each other as clearly shown in Fig. 2 and which are fitted to slide one upon the other at the central portion of the device so that when the device is extended trans versely across the upper part of the window, proper longitudinal adjustment of the said parts or members 1, 1, ma be had in order to permit of accommodating the device to windows of different widths. Although these parts or members 1 are shown on the drawings as formed from sheet metal, this is immaterial to the invention as wood or any other material desired may be substituted.
The ends of the parts or members 1 are closed by plates 2, 2, arranged at opposite ends of the device and as shown more particularly in Fig. 3 these end plates are adapted to receive attaching devices shown herein in the form of screws 3, having engagement with the slotted openings 1, eX- tended horizontally in inner edge portions of said end plates, the shanks of said screws being in engagement with the stiles of the window casing 5, in such manner as to effectively support the improved ventilating device in position extended transversely across the windows.
The upper edge portions 6 of the parts or members 1 are directed horizontally so as to be extended within the window casing 5 and said horizontally directed slotted openings '7, similar to the slotted openings 3 of the end plates 2 and these openings 7 are adapted to receive screws or like fastenings 8 by means of which the device is adapted to be supported along its upper part upon the casing of the window or ther opening to which it is applied.
As hereinbefore described, it is obvious that the device is supported in position ex tended transversely across the upper part of the window casing at the outer side thereof so as to stand in position to efi'ectively shield the opening produced across the top of the window casing when the upper sash is lowered and its upper rail 9 is separated from the top of the casing whereby it will be seen that the entrance of rain, snow, dust or the like into the building is effectively prevented.
Tue inturned portions 6 of the parts or members 1 are free of contact with the opposed t'ace of the casing 6 and thereby produce a port. or vent 10 for the escape of the foul or vitiated air. This port or vent is maintained by the washers 11 surrounding the screws 8 as is particularly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. l Vhile it has been found most advantageous to employ the washers 11, it is to be stated that any other means capable of producing the desired result may be employed. The washers 11 are of a thickness equal to the height of the port or vent 10 and thus assure the proper locking engagement of the screws 8 with the infleeting portion extended inwardly from said central portion and adapted to be spaced apart from the sash rail to produce an elongated opening for the discharge or air.
5. A ventilating device comprising an elongated strip the upper edge portion of which is adapted to be extended along the upper end of a window opening or the like, and the central part of which is inclined. downwardly and outwardly from the window, the lower part of said strip being a de fleeting portion extended inwardly from said central portion and adapted to be spaced apart from the sash rail to produce an elongated opening for the discharge of air and shields extended outwardly at opposite ends or" the lower portion of said elongated strips and adapted to prevent the entry of air at the ends of said opening between said lower portion of the strip and the window sash.
(5. A ventilating device comprising an elongated strip the upper edge portion of which is directed inwardly from the central portion of the strip and is adapted to be extended along the upper edge of a window opening or the like, the lower portion of the strip being also directed inwardly and having heads projecting therefrom to contact with the upper sash of the window to provide an elongated opening for the passage of air.
7. A ventilating device comprising an elongated strip the upper and lower edge portion of which are deflected inwardly from the central portion of the strip, the portion of the lower inturned portion adjacent the central portion being provided with a depending crimp to prevent the passage of moisture along the lower inturned portion through the window opening or the like.
8. i ventilating device comprising an elongated body portion adapted to be extended across the upper part of a window and having means for supporting it upon the window casing when so positioned, and producing an elongated means for a narrow opening between one end edge of the body portion of the ventilator and the window casing to produce a port adapted for the discharge of air from the room.
9. A ventilating device comprising an elongated body portion adapted to be ex tended across the upper part of a window and means for supporting it upon the window casing and means interposed between the casing and the body, when so positioned, for producing an elongated narrow opening between one edge of the body portion of the ventilator and of the window casing to provide a port for the discharge of air from the room.
