LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.

Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to loose-leaf binders of the kind in which two cover portions are employed, the cover portions being united by binding' members that are in threaded engagement.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, the threaded binding members which are employed are in the form of threaded sleeves or posts carried by one of the cover portions and screws for engagement with the threaded portion of the sleeves or posts and carried by the other cover portion.

It is the object of my invention to guard against the separation of those members which are adapted for engagement with the threaded posts or sleeves from the cover portion carrying the same, whereby when the binding members are separated, in order to permit of the insertion of leaves within the loose-leaf binder, or the removal of such leaves, the binding members carried by each cover portion are readily adapted to register and be engaged with the binding members carried by the other cover portion.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I employ a holder for the threaded posts or sleeves and a holder for the threaded elements coniplemental to said posts or sleeves, these holders being bound within the cover portions which are suitably apertured to enable the binding members carried by the cover portion to reach and have engagement with the binding members carried by the other cover port-ion. The holder for the binding members complemental to the threaded posts or sleeves are provided with means whereby said complemental binding members are prevented from being shifted materially'from their axes of rotation and materially from the planes they occupy, so that said complemental binding members are always in position to be engaged with the threaded posts or sleeves and are not likely to be lost when the binding members are disunited.

- The cover portions c and o are of any suitable formation, and, in the instance illustrated in the drawing, are themselves ununited except through the agency of the threaded posts or sleeves c carried by one of the covers and the complemental bindingI members (Z, that are desirably in the form of screws that engage the threaded bores of the sleeves o. I do not wish to be limited, however, to a construction in which the cover portions a and o depend only upon the members c Z for uniting the same. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the cover portion a carries a holding plate or holder c upon which the sleeves o are mounted, these sleeves being suitably secured in any convenient manner, to the holding plate e. The cover portion has a holding plate or holder f bound therein, this latter plate being apertured to permit the shanks of the 'screws d to pass therethrough, the ends of the holding plate f being overturned to overlie the slotted heads of the screws g, Suthcient clearance intervening between the overlapped ends of the plate f and the balance of the plate to prevent the screw heads from being bound, the apertures in the plate f through which the shanks of the screws g pass being also suliiciently large to permit a limited freedom of movement of the shanks of the screws g, so that these shanks may be brought into register with the threaded bores of the sleeves o. The cloth or other material which surrounds the plates or holders c and f is suitably apertured to permit the posts or sleeves c to project through the cover portions, the cover portion o being further apertured to permit of the access of an operating tool to the binding members l when it is desired to unite the binding members c and CZ or to separate the same. When the binding IIO members are separated, the screws cannot be lost, inasmuch as their relationship with the cover portion b carrying the same is permanent.

IVhile I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred -embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction illustrated, as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent the following l. A loose leaf binder including cover portions between which loose leaves may be disposed7 a post carried by one cover portion7 acting as a binding inen'iber, a complemental binding member carried by the other cover portion and adapted to be engaged with and separated from the aforesaid binding member, and a folded plate for holding the complemental binding member in position with respect to the cover portion carrying` the same, the outermost layer of said folded plate being` apertured or recessed to permit of access therethrough to said complemental member.

2. A loose leaf binder including cover portions between which loose leaves may be disposed, a post carried by one cover portion,` acting as a binding member, a binding screw inthreaded engagement with said post and Carried by the other cover portieri, and a folded plate for holding the complemental binding member in position with respect to the cover portion carrying the same, the outermost .layer of said folded plate beingapertured or recessed to permit of access therethrough to said coinplementalV member.
