CLOSURE FOR CONTAINING VESSELS. APPLICATION FILED MAILZ'I; 100a.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE D. CHELLIS, or PORTLAND, MAINE, ASSIGNOR T0 NATIONAL METAL SEAL COMPANY, or PORTLAND, MAINE, A CORPORATION or MAINE.
CLOSURE FOB, CONTAINING VESSEL-S.
Application filed March 27, 1908. Serial No. 423,724.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE I). Commas, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, county of Cumberland, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Containing Vessels,'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures for containing vessels and particularly to such closures as are provided with a cover which seal a deliver opening in a cap which is attached to 'te mouth of the vessel. In closures of this sort which are to be opened and shut frequently it has been diflicult to maintain completeness of seal so that the cover would at all times maintain a tight fit over the opening through which the contents of the vessel would pass when open and this is particularly true in use with vessels containing liquids or evaporable substances. To the end, therefore, of providing a closure adapted to secure and maintain -a oompletenessof seal I have devised my present invention in which I have securcc the desired results by a certain manner of arrangement of parts atfording a peculiar and certain contact all of which will be more fully described hereinafter in the specification which follows and which I have illustrated by drawings showing an embodiment of my invention.
In these drawings, which are made a part of the specification by references employing like numerals to indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of my closure with cover shut, Fig. 2 a section on the line 22, Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1, Fig.4 a plan view with cover open, and Fig. 5 a side elevation in the position shown in Fig. 4;
1 is abottle neck about its mouth. 7
7 is a cap plate surrounded by a depending circumferential flange 8 on which are located spring shoulder engaging fingers 15.
5 is a delivery opening in the cap plate 7 and 5 is' an annular upturned flange surrounding said opening.
18 1s a cover pivoted at 11 to the cap having a shoulder 2 'to. overlie sai plate 7 for lateral swinging movement thereon and i8 is a recess formed in the under surface oi the cover 1%; to receive a parking 18 which is adapted to overlie the opening 5 and bear upon the flange 5.
i i. is a spring locking lip on the cover 18 and adapted to yicldingly engage the shoulder 2 which lies below the vessel mouth and thus brings upon the cover a yielding pres sure which slightly embeds the flange 5* in the packing l8" ottho cover making an absolute seal. i
80 is an annular packing located Within the flange 8 and adapted to be compressed on the mouth of the vessel by the plate 7 under the yielding influence of the spring lingers 15 which engage the shoulder 2.
2t and 29 are my usual locking catches formed in the cap and cover and 70 is my usual compre sion rib for the packing 80.
The nature of the cover packing and reccss may be variously modified and the rib correspondingly changed all without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I therefore claim and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is:
Patcntedliec. 13, 1.910.

A closure for a containing vessel c'oma cover on said cap having a l0(3(.SS, a packing in the recess adapted to overlie said opening and an upturned flange about said opening andadapted to enter the recess in said cover to engage said packing and aresilient locking lip on the cover and adapted to engage the shoulder on' the vessel.
i 3. Aclosure for a containing vessel comprising a cap having a delivery opening therein, a cover on said cap having a recess in the cover, a melting in the recess adapted opening and an upturned flange about said opening and adapted to enter the recess in said cover to engage said packing and means for causing the yielding means for retaining the flange and packing inter-engagement of said packing and said in yielding engagement. p 16 .flange.
