This invention relates to new. and useful improvements in carpet-cleaning devices, having for its object to provide a simple and eicient apparatus, consisting of a yielding bed, 'brushing-rollers, moving-rollers, and a beating-apparatus, whereby the carpet, being wound upon aroller or rollers, maybe moved along, from time to time, over the said yielding bed and brushingmore fully' speciiie'd.
Figure l represents a sectional elevation of the said Figure 2 represents a plan view of the beating-in-` strument. i
Sirnilarlletters` of reference indicate corresponding On any suitable frame, A, Iy arrange a yielding bed, B, consisting o'f cords or straps, stretched over coiled furniture-springs, O, from side to side vof the frame.
The cords are, preferably, made of hair, as more durable, and better adapted for drawing the carpet over them. f f i brushing-rollers D, and below these, winding-rollers E, all having hand-cranks.
'lhe carpet to be cleaned is first rolled upon one of the winding-rollers E,`except a small portion at one end. l
This is laid across the bed B, and beaten with a beating-instrument, F, represented in iig. 2. Y
The said part, after being suiiciently beaten, is then passed alongto the opposite roller E, and engaged thereon, and winding off the other. The .carpet is, from time to time, wholly passed over the lsaid bed, to be beaten. Y
The beating-instrument consists of. a pair of handles, G, to which are connected tw`o bent metal straps, H, for the support of a series of parallel wires, I, arranged at equal distances apart, and connected at the.y
outer ends to a tie-bar, K. This instrument acts upon alarge area of surface at one' blow, and is very effeef' tive and, together with the yielding' bed B', furnishes an exceedingly etlicient .carpet-cleaning apparatus.
`If desired, aprons of woven fabric may be suspended over the winding-rollers, to prevent the dirt, passing away 'from the part 'being beaten and the brushingrollers, from again settling on the cleaned' part.-
Having thus described my invention, I` claim as new, and desire to secure by Patent- 1. The combination of a yielding bed, B, brushingrollers D ed. l
2. The arrangement ofthe yielding beating-bed, with the device for rolling D D and E E, as shown and described, in combiiiation with the' beater K F I I H G G, for the purpose specified.
