' HYDRAULIC vIsE.
To all whom; 'it may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Sol-{WAN- nxra-zl., a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Mont- ,gomery land State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Vi'ses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hydraulic vises.
` The object of the invention is-to provide a vise of the above type that is simple and durable in construct1on, elicient in operaoccasion require. y
Referring to the accompanying drawings, -plan View of my improved hydraulic vise partially in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partially in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view ofthe same on the line a-a of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line b-b of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is va `front elevation partially in section.
Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference. characters indicate corresponding parts.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 designates a base provided at its rear end with a chamberA 2. Mounted in the tion, and which 'may be used as a jack should chambelg and supported by the Walls thereof,
is a cylinder 3 in which a ram 4 is adapted to reciprocate. The end of the ram within the cyllnder is rovided with a suitable eu-p packing 5, whi e the other end is provided with a vise jaw (i. The'vise jaw 6 works in connect-ion with a vise jaw 7 provided with a boss 8 which lies in a bearmg 9, thereby allowing the jaw 7 to rock 0r oscillate. The jaw 6 maybe similarly rocked, the plunger 4 acting as la pivot. The jaw 7 is held in At-he bearing 9 by `a suitable key 9a. To prevent the jaws rocking when once placed in a desired position, vthere is provided in the boss 8 a suitable number of .recesses 10 adapted to receive a pin 1l controlled by a spring 12, see Fig. The pin 11 and spring 12 lie in a recessed boss 13, and the outer specification of Letters Patent.

piece 14 by means ot' which said pin may be withdrawn from one of the recesses 10 to allow the 'aws 6 and 7 to be rocked to a different position. It will be seen that the axis of the jaw 7 is in line with the axis of the ram upon which the jaw -6 is rigidly mounted. Owing to this, the work may be turned to one side without removing it from the vise.
It will be seen that, if hydraulic pressure can be brought to bear on the end of the ram 4 within the cylinder 3, the jaws 6 and 7 will be pressed together and any article placed between said jaws will be held rigidly. This pressure is brought to bear as follows. chamber by means of screws 14a or other suitable means, is a pump housing 15 within which is a pump cylinder 16 inclosing a reciprocating piston 17 provided with suitable packing 18. The piston 17 is attached to an extension 19 which projects out of the housing 15 where it is attached to a pivotal member 21 by means of a screw 22. The member 2l is pivoted at 23 and is provided with a. socket 24 adapted to receive a hand lever 25. The member 2l is also provided with a projection 26 that engages the extreme end of the piston extension 19 when the piston is moved 1nwardly, thereby taking the pressure olf the screw 22. It will thus be seen that the piston 17 is reciprocated by means of the hand lever 25, and when it is thus reciprocated it will draw the liquid from thechamber 2, which acts as a reservoir, durlng its outward movement, and forces said -liquid into the cylinder 3 back of the ram during its inward movement. The liquid is drawn into the pump cylinder 16 through a curved Mounted on the side of the# tube 27 provided with a screen 29, see Fig.
. The passage-way formed by the tubeQT is controlled by a valve 30 which prevents the liquid flowing back into the reservoir orchamber 2. The liquid is forced out of the cylinder 16 through a tube 3l which opens into the ram cylinder 3. The pas-` sage-way through the tube 31 is controlled by a valve 32 which prevents vthe liquid 1n the ram cylinder, flowing back into the pump cylinder. Both valves 30 and 32 are provided with leather faces wh1ch take up any unevenness of the valve seats due to Wear or foreign substances entering them.
' pressure, back of the ram 4. The vise jaw 6 may then be pushed back a distance sufficient to: receive the article desired to be held in thefvise. The release valve isthen closed and the pump piston is reciprocated by means of the lever 25. During this reciprocating movement the liquid is drawn in from the reservoir or chamber 2, and is forced into the `cylinder 3 under pressure.`
As the ratio between the diameter of the ram 4 andthe piston 11 is quite large, the liquid within the cylinder 3 may be placed under great pressure, which pressure holds the article between-the vise jaws. Vhen it is ldesired to remove the article vin the.
vise,I the release valve 33fis opened, as before described.
The cylinder 3 is providedwith a wiping ring 39 of felt or any s'uitable material,
.which prevents foreign matter entering between the ram and the cylinder. The cap 2 of the chamber 2 is provided with an air vent 40, filled with felt which prevents the entrance of foreign matter, see Fig. 2.
The. base '1 is provided with lugs 4l by 'means of which it may be attached to a bench.l
The device may be 'used as a. jackas follows. f Projecting through the jaw 7 and the bearing is astandard or 'rod 42 rigidly attached tothe jaw 6 by any suitable means. The `rod 42 is splined tothe jaw 7 by akey 44, which compels Athe two jaws 6 and 7 to rock concurrently.
The outer end of said rod 42 is provided with a recessed head 43 adapted to engage thearticle to be lifted. When used as a jack, the release valve is opened to allow the head 43 to recede.
The device is then placed vertically under` the article to be lifted and the lever 25 is reciprocated the .same as when used as a vise.
I claim:
