To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. SAYLns, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a chalk-holding device, adapted for use by carpenters and p thers who are accustomed to use a chalk The object of my improved device is t0 facilitate the chalking of a line, and at the same time economize the chalk, since with my improved holder it becomes practicable to use the chalk evenly, or approximately so until it is practically consumed.

My improved device consists of a body memberl which is semispherical in shape and provided wit-h a bottom disk adapted to swing away from the body member, whereby the latter is opened fo-r the reception of the chalk, after which the movable bottom is returned to its normal position and maintains the chalk in place. This bottom is connected with the body of the device in such a manner that the body member' is sup` ported or raised slightly above the bottom i to allow the chalk line to enter, the bottom plate or disk being equipped with a lip projecting somewhat beyond the semispherical body part, and thereby forming a stop o-r catch for the line, whereby the latter is guided into the holder and underneath the cake or block of chalk. The portion of the body member remote from the movable disk, is provided with an opening' adapted to receive the thumb of the user, whereby the chalk may be pressed downwardly upon the line during the operation of chalking the latter.

Having briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accolnpanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In this drawing: Figure 1 is an underneath view of my improved chalk-holder showing the line in place for chalking purposes. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the chalk holder, also showing the line in place. Fig. l is an underneath view of the bottom plate or disk swung to one side to permit the insertion of the chalk. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the device showing the chalk in place. Fig. G is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the device held in the hand of the user, `as in the operation of chalking a line.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.

Let the numeral 5 designate the body member of my improved chalk-holder, the same being illustrated as approximately semispherical in shape, a segment of the body member being removed, as shown at 6, to form an opening 7 for the introduction of the thumb of the user while clialking the line. lVhile this holder, as shown in the drawing, has the shape of the segment of a sphere, it is evident that this shape may be varied to accommodate a block of chalk of any desired shape. These cakes orblocks of chalk are generally made semispherical or having the shape of a segment of a sphere, and it is for this reason that the body of my improved holder has the shape mentioned. This body member is provided with a perforated ear 8 which is pivotally connected by means of a rivet 9 with aplate or disk l0 which forms the bottom of the body-member and serves to prevent the escape of the chalk 12 when the device is in use. The ear 8 of the body member projects somewhat below the plane of the lower edge of the said member, so that when the plate or disk l0 is connected therewith by a rivet or other suitable fastening device 9, the said plate or disk will extend slightly below the lower edge of the body member, sullicient space heilig thereby provided to allow the cord 13 to enter. This disk or plate, forming the bottom cover or closure of the hollow body-member, when the device is in use, is rovided directly opposite the rivet pivot with a lip 14;, which acts as a guide in directing the line into the chalk-holder, whereby it is caused to pass under the block of chalk, which may be pressed down upon the bottom plate or closure 10 as indicated in Fig. 6.

From the foregoing description, the use of my improved device will be readily understood. Preparatory to the use of the device for chalking a line, a piece of chalk l2 is placed in the boX, after which the bottom plate or closure 10 is swung into place or to its normal position. rI`hen by the aid of the guide lip 141:, the line 13 is caused to slip into the device between the bottom l0 and the adjacent edge of the semispherical body portion. Then by pressing down upon the chalk with the thumb (see Fig. 6), after the line is in place underneath the chalk, the line may be quickly and easily challred, with practically no loss of material.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

l. A device of the class described, comprising a hollow, semi-spherical, body member, having an opening in the top, an ear offset from the plane of its lower edge, and

a plate or cover pivotally connected with the I said ear to swing in a plane transversely thereof, substantially as described.

2. A chalk holder, comprising a hollow, semispherical, body member, having an opening in the top, and a plate offset from the base of the body member, and pivotally connected therewith to swing in a plane scribed.
