To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY .O. KARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hasbrouck Heights, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Cigarette-Making Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cigarette making devices adapt-ed to be conveniently carried in the pocket. Its object is the production of a simple, eflicient and compact device that can be incorporated'with the box or pouch in which the tobacco is sold, at a cost that will permit a manufacturer or merchant to give this cigarette making device with his goods as an advertisement.

A further object of the invention is to make .it impracticable to refill without mutilating the device.-

With these objects in view the invention comprises a receptacle or canister for tobacco including a forming tube telescoping within and a plunger foldable alongside the said receptacle.

In the accompanying drawings, which are hereby made a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a partial section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. designates a receptacle of oblong or flattened cross section that has formed therewith a narrower neck portion 21 at one end thereof. The contour of the lower portion 22 of the said receptacle 20 is half round for a specified distance whereafter it has a flattened and inclined portion 23 that joins the straight lower side 24 of the said neck portion 21. The upper portion 25 of the receptacle 20 is formed with a U shaped groove 26 for its entire length except at a specified distance from the necked end where it is provided with an inverted ball shaped raised socket 27. The latter has an elongated aperture or longitudinal slot 28 extending approximately across the face thereof. A plunger or tamping rod 29 is maintained in slidable engagement therewith and is prevented from pulling out of the said socket 25 by virtue of a bulb shaped tamping head 30 at one end of said plunger rod 29 and a slightly curved handle hook 31 atthe other end thereof. The said tamping head 30 closes the slot 28 of the socket 27 when the rod 29 is placed in an inoperative position as shown in Figs. 1 to 4:. The handle hook 31 fits snugly over the right hand end of the receptacle 20 and when forced down thereover maintains the said rod 29 in a locked position therewith. The lower end of the tamping head 30 has a conical depression 32, the object of which is to hold the tobacco while it is tamped into a forming tube 35. The said tube 35 is in slidable engagement with a guide sleeve 36 that extends from the lower portion of a funnel or flared retainer 37 The latter depends from the straight side 24; of the neck portion 21. The upper end of the tube 35 has an outwardly flaring portion 39 that registers with the said retainer 37 by virtue of which the tube 35 is prevented from disengagement with the former. Adjacent to the said flaring portion 39 the tube 35 is provided with a projection 33 formed therewith which coacts with the inner face of the guide sleeve 36 to hold the said tube 35 in a locked position. The lower extremity of the forming tube 35 has incorporated therewith small corrugations or ridges 3S distributed in alternate horizontal and vertical groups to provide a grip for the operators fingers when pulling out the said tube 35 from within the receptacle 20.

A slide 40 conforms to the curvature of the half round lower side 22 of the receptacle 20 and is held in operative position therewith by means of a clip 41, which coacts with a slot 42 formed in said slide 40, the clip 41 is suitably secured to the said receptacle 20. The slide 40 is provided with an extending ear 43 by means of which the said slide 40 is moved either to close the end of the forming tube 35 when the latter is drawn in and to maintain it in a locked position with the receptacle 20, or moved toward the other extremity of the slot 42 when it is desired to extend out the tube 35 previous to forming a cigarette thereon.

The outer end of the neck portion 21 is closed by a head 44 which can either be forced in or attached thereto by means of a seamed joint in the usual manner. Adjacent to the opposite and larger end 47 of the receptacle 20 is a head 45 adapted to slide within the latter. The said slidable head 45 is operated by means of a wire bail 46 that is attached thereto and which passes through openings provided therefor in the head 44. The longitudinal members 46 and 46 that form the said bail 46 straddle the forming tube 35, one on each side thereof and are connected at their outer ends by a member 46 which crosses the head 44 diagonally as shown in Fig. 3. The former has a depressed central portion 50 for clearance of the operators fingers when taking hold of the said member 46 to manipulate the slidable head 45 in order to bring the tobacco contained in the receptacle 20 toward theretainer 37 for the tube 35. An advanced position of the head 45 and the bail member 46 is shown in Fig. 2 by the dash and dotted lines 45 and 46 respectively.

In Fig. 6 wherein the forming tube 35 is shown extended out and the plunger rod 29 partially entered therein, the slidable head 45 and the thereto connected bail 46 are dispensed with. The ends 44 and 48 are in this case formed integral with the longitudinal body sides of the said receptacle 20 and the upper and lower sides 25 and 22 respectively seamed thereto.

In Fig. 2 a head 48 is attached to the larger end 47 of the receptacle 20 in a similar manner to that of the head 44. It is evident that any attempt to force an entrance into the receptacle 20 would either so distort or mutilate the said receptacle and end heads fastened therewith as to make it practically useless for re-use.

Before the head 44 which is preferably the last one to be attached to the receptacle 20 is secured in place, the plunger rod 29 is inserted through the slot 28 with the socket 27, and the forming tube 35 is inserted through the retainer 37 with the guide sleeve 36, whereafter the receptacle 20 is charged with tobacco, next the saidhead 44 is fastened in position.

The longitudinal sides of the receptacle 20 are provided with holders 51 preferably formed integral with the said longitudinal sides by slitting and bulging out the same for the purpose of holding folders contain ing cigarette paper and matches with which the tobacconist customarily supplies his customers. The openingsof the slits forming the said holders 51 are covered by pieces of paper 52, paratfined on their inside surfaces, and glued or otherwise fastened to the interior of the said receptacle 20. A similar precaution to keep the air from the tobacco is observed at the end of the receptacle 20 where the inclined side 23 joins the neck portion 21, namely a false bottom or diaphragm 53 of oiled or paraltined paper is inserted and glued thereto (Fig. 6).

In the modificationof the invention illustrated in Figs. 9 to 14 a pouch 60 is substituted for the receptacle 20, and the shape of the former is carried or sustained by a wire frame 61. The top member 61 of the latter forms an eye 61 at the left hand portion thereof that is an equivalent of the ball socket and slot respectively 27 and 28 of the previously described construction. The right 7 hand portion 61 of the said member 61 provides locking means for the handle hook 31 of the plunger rod 29 by virtue of the said portion 61 yielding or springing back to allow the said hook 31 to pass thereover. The forming tube 35 in this case is held within a guide 61 formed by the coiled ends 61 and 61 of the wire of the said frame 61 meeting at this point. An equivalent of the slide 40 is here found in a flap or apron 62 which is provided with a snap button 63, similar to what is used on gloves or other wearing apparel, that engages its socket member 63 fastened to the pouch fabric, when the tube 35 is drawn within the pouch. The said flap 62 is pulled back (as shown in dotted lines Fig. 10) and buttoned on another socket member 63 that is fastened to a lower side 60 of the said pouch 60 when it is desired to extend the tube 35 for the purpose of forming a cigarette thereon. To hold the folders of cigarette paper and matches with the said pouch 6O holders 68 of tape are sewn onto the longitudinal sides 6O thereof. The receptacle or pouch fabric may be sewn to wire frame 61 as indicated by the stitches 64. In other respects the elements and their functions correspond to the previously described construction.

To use my invention, the internal revenue seal 65 (Figs. 1 and 9) which envelops the receptacle, the plunger rod 29 and the slide 40 (or flap 62) is broken. The said slide 40 (or flap 62) is then moved toward the larger or right hand end of the said receptacle whereafter the forming tube 35 may be extended outwardly of the guide ring 86. At the first stroke of the plunger rod 29 the false paper bottom 53 is ripped open after which the said plunger rod 29 is used to loosen any tobacco that may be lodged in the corners of the receptacle 20 as shown by dotted lines 29 in Fig. 6. The tobacco is then worked over into the retainer 37 wherein it is in position to be tamped down in the forming tube 35 around which a ciga rette paper has previously been wrapped and moistened on the edge as well as twisted at the end. After the said forming tube 35 has been tamped full the last stroke of the plunger pushes the completed cigarette off the forming tube. By my device either long or short cut tobacco may be used.

Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1s:

1. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a telescopic cigarette forming tube at one end of said receptacle and a plunger approximately in alinement and coacting with said forming tube adapted to fold alongside said receptacle.

2. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a guide sleeve formed with one side of said receptacle at one end thereof, a cigarette forming tube in engagement with said guide sleeve adapted to recede within or extend beyond said receptacle and a plunger located approximately opposite to and coacting with said forming tube adapted to fold with said receptacle.

3. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a narrower neck portion for said receptacle at one end thereof, a guide sleeve with said neck portion, a cigarette forming tube slidable within said guide sleeve and extending beyond the latter when in a receding position for manipulation thereof and a plunger cooperating with said forming tube adapted to fold alongside said receptacle.

4. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a narrow neck portion for one end of said receptacle, a retainer with a flaring end communicating with said neck portion, a guide sleeve for the other end of said retainer, a telescopic cigarette forming tube engaging said guide sleeve with a portion thereof extending beyond the latter for manipulating, a slide suitably held in coacting position with said receptacle adapted to close and maintain said forming tube in a locked position and a plunger cooperating with and located approximately opposite said forming tube.

5. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a neck portion for one end of said receptacle, a retainer communicating with said neck portion, a guide sleeve projecting outwardly from said retainer, a cigarette forming tube in slidable engagement with said guide sleeve, a flaring upper portion for said forming tube registering with said retainer when in an extended position beyond said receptacle, a corrugated lower portion for said forming tube to provide a manipulating grip therefor, a slide coacting with said receptacle adapted to maintain said forming tube in a closed position therewith and a cooperating plunger in approximate alinement with said forming tube.

6. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a telescopic cigarette forming tube at one side of said receptacle, a socket at the opposite side of said receptacle in approximate alinement with said forming tube and a plunger detachably supported by said socket adapted to cooperate with said forming tube and foldable with said receptacle.

7. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco a telescopic cigarette forming tube at one side of said receptacle, an inverted ball shaped socket at the opposite side of said receptacle in approximate alinement with said forming tube and provided with an elongated aperture extending approximately across the longitudinal face of said ball socket, a plunger rod adapted to cooperate with said forining tube through said aperture, a bulb shaped tamping head for one end of said plunger rod adapted to close said aperture when said plunger is folded with said receptacle and a handle hook at the other end of said plunger red adapted to lock with one end of said receptacle also when said plunger rod is folded therewith.

S. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a neck portion for one end of said receptacle, a flared container communicating with said neck portion, a guide sleeve extending from said retainer, a ciga rette forming tube slidable within said guide sleeve and having a flaring upper portion to register with said retainer when the tube is extended and having a corrugated lower portion to provide a manipulating grip therewith, a slide coaeting with said recep tacle adapted to maintain said forming tube in a closed position therewith, a ball shaped socket with an aperture for the opposite side of said receptacle in approximate alinement with said retainer and a plunger rod adapted to cooperate with said forming tube through the aperture in said socket and have ing a bulb shaped tamping head at one end thereof adapted to close the aperture in said socket and having a handle hook at the other end thereof adapted to lock with said receptacle contemporaneously with the closure of the aperture in said socket when said plunger is folded alongside said receptacle.

9. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco a telescopic cigarette forming tube at one side thereof and a cooperating plunger in approximate alinement with said forming tube adapted to fold within a groove in the opposite side of said receptacle.

10. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco and provided with a longitudinal groove in one side, a cigarette forming tube telescopic within the opposite side of said receptacle, a socket within said groove in approximate alinement with said forming tube and provided with an elongated aperture in alinement with said groove, and a plunger rod cooperating with said forming tube through said aperture adapted to close the latter when folded within said groove.

11. In a. device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a telescopic cigarette forming tube within one side of said receptacle, a plunger in approximate alinement with and opposite to said forming tube and a tamping head with a conical recess at one end of said plunger adapted to cooperate with said forming tube to force tobacco thereinto.

12. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a cigarette forming tube telescopic within one side of said receptacle, holders comprising outwardly bent strips with adjacent sides of said receptacle adapted to hold folders of cigarette paper and a plunger supported within the opposite side of said formiiig tube adapted to cooperate therewith.

13. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to hold tobacco, a cigarette forming tube telescopic within one side of said receptacle, a slidable head within said receptacle, means connected with said slidable head to bring the tobacco contained in said receptacle toward said forming tube and a plunger in approximate alinement with said forming tube opposite thereto adapted to force the tobacco thereinto.

14. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a neck portion for one side of said receptacle, a retainer communicating with said neck portion, a guide sleeve extending from said retainer, a cigarette form-' ing tube slidable within said guide sleeve, a head movable within said receptacle adapted to bring the tobacco contained in said receptacle toward said retainer, a bail secured to said movable head and extending outside of said receptacle to provide means for manipulating said movable head and a plunger in approximate alinement with said retainer at the side opposite adapted to force tobacco from said retainer into said forming tube.

15. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle comprising end heads and sides adapted to contain tobacco, a cigarette forming tube telescopic within one side of said receptacle, a slidable head within said receptacle adapted to bring the tobacco in said receptacle toward said forming tube, a bail secured to said sliding head whereby the latter may be manipulated, said bail passing through one end head of said receptacle adjacent to said forming tube, said end head having a depressed cen tral port-ion to provide clearance for the operators fingers when manipulating said bail, and a plunger cooperating with said forming tube adapted to fold with said receptacle.

16. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a cigarette forming tube telescopic within one side of said receptacle, a diaphragm with said receptacle adapted to hold the tobaccocontained therein to one end thereof and a plunger cooperating with said forming tube adapted to fracture said diaphragm to bring the tobacco held by the latter in operative position to be acted upon by said plunger.

17. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a cigarette forming tube telescopic within one side of said receptacle, holders comprising outwardly bent strips formed between slits in adjacent sides of said receptacle, covers attached to the inside surfaces of said receptacle adapted to cover up the slits formed therewith and a plunger supported within the side opposite said forming tube adapted to cooperate therewith.

18. In a device of the character described the combination of a receptacle adapted to contain tobacco, a guide sleeve with one side of said receptacle, a cigarette forming tube slidable within said guide sleeve, locking means for the upper end of said forming tube adapted to coact with said guide sleeve and a plunger supported in approximate alinement with said forming tube adapted to cooperate therewith.
