METAL FURNITURE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, James F. LINDLEY, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at- Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal F urniture, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in metal furniture, and I have shown it as ap plied particularly to beds, but it is applicable to other uses.

An object of the invention is to provide a flat surface or panel of ample area to give the appearance of greater massiveness and solidity than can be obtained at the same cost in strictly tubular beds, and the object also is to provide ample surfaces for ornamental and decorative effects.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a bedstead in elevation, and partial vertical section embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.

at, l are the vertical posts of the bed, here shown as made out of cylindrical tubing. Near the tops of posts 4 are the two horizontal and cylindrlcal tubes 5, and near the lower ends of posts 4 is a similar horizontal tube 6. The adjacent sides of the two tubes 5 are split longitudinally to receive the longitudinal edges of a panel 7 of sheet metal, which edges are inserted into the tubes 5 through the openings thus formed. The horizontal edges of the panel are thus held in a firm and rigid manner, and the ends of the panel are stiffened and reinforced by being bent around vertical wires 8, and the splits in the tubes 5 are made to terminate with suitable perforations to receive the ends of the panel 7 thus reinforced.

Vertical tubes 9, arranged in groups of two extend from the lower horizontal tube 5 down to the horizontal tube 6 and have their ends permanently fastened to their adjacent tubes 5 and 6 by means of cast iron couplings 10 and 11, in the usual manner. The adjacent walls of each pair of tubes 9 are slotted or split longitudinally, to receive Specification of Letters Patent.

the sheet metal panels 12, in the same man her as has been described for the securing of the panel 7 in the tubes 5. The horizontal ends of the panels 12 are reinforced with wires 9, around which the ends of the metal sheets forming the panels 12 are rolled or bent in the same manner as described for the ends of the panels 7, and these reinforced ends of the panels 12 enter the tubes 9 through suitable enlargements at the ends of said splits, to receive them. The panels 12 are assembled before the pipes 9 are fastened by means of their chills 10 and 11. The surfaces of the panels 7 and 12 afford excellent opportunities for decora tive effects, and they add to the massive appearance of the structure without materially adding to the cost of manufacture.

It is obvious that the size, shape, number and arrangement of the panels may be variously modified without departing from the spirit of my invention, I therefore do not desire to be restricted to the design here shown, but

What I do claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In an article of manufacture, sheet metal panels, rolls at the ends of said pan- .els, tubular supports for said panels in parallel pairs, the adjacent walls of each of said pairs being slotted longitudinally to receive the corresponding edges of the panels which edges are inserted in said. slots, said slots having enlargements to receive the rolls of the panels which are inserted therein.

2. In an article of furniture, sheet metal panels, wires at the ends of said panels, tubular supports for said panels in parallel pairs, the adjacent walls of each of said pairs being slotted longitudinally to receive the corresponding edges of the panels, which edges are inserted in said slots, said slots having enlargements to receive the end wires which are inserted therein.
