To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ANsoN E. SHUSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Bend, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Drawers-Supporter, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The objects of the invention are, generally, the provision in a merchantable form, of a device of the above mentioned class, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, facile in operation, and devoid of complicated parts; other and further objects being made manifest hereinafter as the description of the invention progresses.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, delineated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in that portion of this instrument wherein patentable novelty is claimed for certain distinctive and peculiar features of the device, it being understood, that, within the scopeof what hereinafter thus is claimed, divers changes in form, proportions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawlngs.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the invention in perspective; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the invention applied; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the spring; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a portion of the spring, parts being in elevation; Fig. 5 is a sectional detail designed to show the means whereby the spring is assembled with the body of the device.
The improved device forming the subject matter of this application for Letters Patent is adapted, primarily, although not exclusively, to be assembled with the waistband of a pair of underdrawers, whereby the latter may be suspended from the waistband of a pair of pantaloons.
In carrying out my invention, I provide, primarily, a body member 1, which, broadly speaking, is U-shaped in form, one arm, denoted by the numeral 2 being longer than the other arm 3 of the body member. Mounted within the body member 1, is a spring 4, which, like the body member 1 is U-shaped, the arms of the spring 4, however, may have substantially the same length, so that the inner arm 25 of the spring 4 will depend below the short arm 3 of the body member.
Adjacent its lower end, the long arm 2 of the body is provided with an opening 6 adapted to receive a tongue 7 which is struck from the outer arm 5 of the spring, the tongue 7'- being down-bent to assemble the sprmg 4 with the body 1. The short arm 3 of the body is notched in its lower edge as denoted by the numeral 8, whereby there are formed, upon either side of the notch, bearings 9, which are inbent toward the spring 4.
The device further includes a lever 10, the neck 11 of which is notched upon either side as denoted by the numeral 12, whereby are formed lateral projections 14, adapted to register in the bearings 9 of the short arm of the body portion, whereby the lever 10 may be assembled pivotally with the body 1. These notches 14 result in the formation of shoulders 15 in the lever 10, the said shoulders being adapted to bear upon the bearings 9 to limit and to direct the pivotal movement of the lever 10. The neck 11 of the lever is prolonged beyond the pivotal connections between the lever and the body and bent to form an outwardly projecting finger 16, adapted to bear against the inner arm 25 of the spring and to engage a shoulder 17 of said inner arm bent into the same intermediate its ends.
The portion of the inner arm 25 of the spring which is beneath the lever 10, is pro vided with a longitudinally disposed slot 18 in which is slidably mounted a stud 19 which is adapted to extend through a wedge-shaped opening 24 in the lever 10, the stud 19 being provided with a rounded head 23 adapted to engage the lower, diminished portion of the opening in the lever, whereby the lever may be held locked to the spring, and to pass freely through the upper, and larger portion of the opening in the lever, whereby, when the stud is slid upwardly, the lower, free end of the lever may be swung awa from the spring 4. The head 23 of the stud is rounded upon its exterior face, and, by this construction, when the free end of the lever moves downwardly, under the action of the spring 4, this rounded head, being engaged by the diverging edges of the opening 24 in the lever, will move upwardly, perother circumstances, in which it is not in engagement 'with garments of any form, owing to the construction of the stud 19, the same, when the free end of the lever, is

The particular construction of the stud 19 is deemed to be noteworthy. By referring to Fig. 4-, it will be seen that the shank of the stud is diminished as denoted by the numeral 20. This diminishment in the diameter of the stud results in the formation of a shoulder 26 which is adapted to bear against the face of the spring at and upon either side of the slot 18 thereof. The
- shank is further diminished in diameter as denoted by the numeral 21, and this diminishment in the diameter of the stud forms a shoulder 27 against which is adapted to abut a nut or washer 22 whereby the stud may be assembled slidably with the spring 1. The distance between the shoulders 26 I and 27 is slightly greater than the thickness of the spring 1, and, by this construction, the washer 22 is spaced apart from the spring, so that the stud may at all times slide freely upon the member with which it is assembled.
The practical operation of the device is as follows. The head 23 of the stud 19 is engaged by the fingers and the stud raised, to move the same to the upper end of the opening 18 in the spring. The head 23 will be disposed in the larger portion of the opening 24.- of the lever, so that the lower end of the lever may be swung outwardly.

Owing to the fact that the finger 16 of.
the lever 10 bears against the inner arm 25 of the spring, the said spring serves as a means for retaining the lever, either inthe downturned position'shown in Fig. 1, or in the upturned position shown'in dotted line in Fig. 2. When the lever 10 is upturned as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the finger 16 of the lever will be engaged by theshoulder 17, to hold the lever in its upturnedposit-ion.
Having thus described my said'invention,
what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A device of the class described comprisinga U-shaped body having unequal arms; a
U-shaped spring disposed within the body and arranged to depend below the shorter arm of the body; a lever pivoted to the shorter arm of the body and being prolonged. beyond the pivotal connection to form a finger to engage the spring, the
spring being longitudinally slotted beneath the lever, and the lever being provided with.
awedge-shaped opening; a stud slidably mounted in the slot of the spring and arranged to extend through the opening of the lever, the studbeing provided with a head to engage the smaller end of the opening in the lever and to move freely through thelarger end of said opening.
