SEWING-MACHINE TABLE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SvnN PETTER GERDIN, subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Hjaltegatan 29, Amal, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sewing machine tables, in which that portion of the table plate, which carries the machine arm, is loose and capable of being turned around 180 in a vertical plane, thereby bringing the machine arm underneath the table and leaving the upper surface of the plate smooth and unobstructed for purposes of being used as a common table. Flaps and bonnets as commonly used by sewing machines are hereby rendered unnecessary. I attain this object by an arrangement illus trated in the accompanying drawing, in which- 1 Figure l is a general view of the sewing machine in elevation, Fig. 2 is a top View of the table with the arm removed, Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the table on the line AB, in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the table on the line C D in Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the movable portion of the table.

The main portion (Z of the table plate is securely screwed on to the legs or standards p. It has a rectangular hole or opening 0, in which the movable portion Z2 is movably fitted. This movable portion of the table plate carries the machine arm a withall therein mounted parts. From the two opposite side edges of the movable plate extend two pairs of studs f and 9, arranged opposite each other. On the corresponding edges of the opening in the main portion of the table d are securely fastened two vertical metal plates is, provided with slots or grooves of a suitable shape, for the purpose of receiving and guiding said studs f and 9 when turning the movable plate as above mentioned. In the accompanying drawing is one of these slots h shown straight and horizontal, the other one 1' having a suitable curvature, but it is evident, that the slots can be formed in different ways for the same purpose.
When the machine is used for sewing, the position of the arm is that shown with full lines in Fig. 1. The studs f are then resting in the right hand end of the slots h, and the studs 9 in the right hand end of the slots 2'. The movable plate I) is furthermore held in position by suitable latches or shutterbolts not shown on the drawing.
When desired to use the machine as a common table the latches or shutterbolts are withdrawn, the driving belt 9 is disconnected and the movable plate together with the arm a fastened thereon is turned around 180 in a vertical plane as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. Hereby are the studs f and g sliding in the slots or grooves h and i, which serve as guides for their motion. When the plate is turned completely upside down, the position of the machine arm is that shown with dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the under surface of the movable plate is in the same plane as the upper surface of the main portion of the table. The movable plate 6 can be secured in this position by latches as mentioned above. The slots 71. and 2' are so formed and arranged in relation to each other, that the distance from the right hand end it of the slot h to the right hand end a" of the slot 5 is the same as the distance from it to the left hand end 2' of the slot 2' and the same as the distance from the lowest point i of the slot 71 to the slot 71., which is equal to the distance between the studs f and g. The studs f are suitably located in the center of the long sides of the plate 6.
The driving belt 9 is carried up through the plate 6 in holes 0, which holes may be connected with each other by a suitable slot, corresponding to the thickness of the belt.
Having thus described my invention, I declare, that what I claim is 1. A sewing machine table having an opening, plates depending from o posite sides of said opening, each of said p ates being provided with a substantially straight guideway and an irregular guide-way, one end of said irregular guide-way being positioned above the plane of said straight guide-way and the other end being positioned below the plane of said straight gu de-Way, and a movable plate in said opening, said plate being provided on opposite sides thereof with studs engaging said guide-ways, said guide-ways and said studs being so positioned that said movable plate may be turned in this opening through an angle of 180.
