Be it known that T, OSCAR OEHRIXG, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Berlin, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Couplings for Connecting' Continuously-Rotating Parts with Intermittently-Rotating Parts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a coupling for two parts of a machine having the same axis, which during the course of two successive revolutions couples the parts of the machine together during 'one revolution only, so that both parts rotate together for one revolution and are then uncoupled, only the driving part of the coupling continuing to rotate while the part previously driven remains stationary, this operation being repeated as long as the driving part of the coupling continues in motion,
One form of this coupling is illustrated in the accompanying drawing by way of example.
Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 are respectively plans of the coupling in difierent positions, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the coupling.
On a fixed shaft a two disks Z) and c are mounted to rotate. The disk I) which is connected with the drive is rotated in the direction of the arrow I and carries a stop (Z which actuates a locking lever 6 against the action of a spring 7. In its position of rest the spring pressed lever c lodges against a pin 9. The disk Z) is also provided with a tooth or shoulder h on its periphery.
The disk 0 carries a spring pressed pawl 2', z" resembling a bent lever, the arm 2" of which under the influence of the spring k is pressed against the edge of the disk Z) into the path of the shoulder h. The other arm 2' has a stop Z and when the pawl 2', z" is carried around by the disk 0 the stop Z comes against a stop on on the lever 6 when the latter is in the position of rest.
The action of the device is as follows: Suppose the disk 6 is in any position whatever, for example in that indicated in Fig. 1. hen it rotates in the direction of the arrow the shoulder it travels through the arc indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, until itstrikes against the free end of the arm 2" thus coupling the disk 0 to the disk Z). As the rotation proceeds the shoulder it carries along the disk 0 (Fig. 2) until the stop Z Specification of Letters Patent.

Now in order to bring the free end of the arm 2" into the path of the shoulder 72, or locking tooth again in order that the disk 7) after its idle revolution may be again coupled with the disk 0, the pin (Z strikes against the lever e and forces it aside against the pressure of the spring f (Fig. 4) whereby the stop m is moved out of the path of the stop Z, and the bent lever 2' z" returns under the pressure of the spring 70 to the position indicated in Fig. 1. Thus when the pin (Z has left the lever e the latter likewise returns under the influence of the spring 7 to its position of rest. The parts are once more in the position indicated in Fig. 1 so that the described action thereof is repeated.
As will be seen from the foregoing description the disk 0 is rotated once each time the disk 6 is rotated twice.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The improved automatic coupling for connecting continuously rotating parts with intermittently rotating parts comprising a driving disk provided with a peripheral shoulder or tooth and a stop on one face, a driven disk, a two armed pawl or lever pivoted thereon adapted to engage the shoulder or tooth on the driving disk and couple the disks together, and a spring pressed locking lever arranged at each alternate revolution to move the pawl out of engagement with the driving disk and thus release the driven disk from the driving disk said lever being then operated by the stop on the driving disk to release the pawl so that the pawl is caused to engage and dis- .engage to alternately couple and uncouple the disk substantially as described.
2. An automatic coupling comprising a shaft, two rotatable members mounted thereon one of which is loose on said shaft,
coupling means pivoted on one member adapted to engage the other member and turn together for a predetermined distance, a swinging member normally held in the path of rotation of the coupling means for disconnecting the rotatable member, and means on one rotatable member for disengaging the swinging member from the coupling means and permitting said swinging member and coupling means to return to their initial positions.
3. A coupling comprising a shaft, two rotatable members mounted thereon one of which is loose on said shaft and the other fixed thereto, one of said members being the driving member interengaging coupling means mounted on said members and adapted to automatically engage once for every two rotations of the driving member and turn the driven member a predetermined distance, a swinging arm normally held against. a fixed stop in the path of rotation of the coupling means and provided with a lug to engage said coupling means and disconnect the two members, and means on said driving member for operating the swinging arm to permit the couplin means to return to its initial position befiore said driving member has completed one revolution.
4. An automatic coupling comprising a shaft, a fixed member and a loose member mounted thereon, a lever pivoted on the loose member adapted to be engaged by the fixed member as the shaft rotates for turn ing said loose member a predetermined distance, a swinging arm normally held against a stop in position to engage the pivoted lever as the members rotate and disengage said lever from the fixed member, and a pin on the fixed member adapted to operate the swinging arm as it turns, whereby said coupling lever is permitted to return to initial position, after which the pin escapes from the swinging arm and the latter is again forced against the stop.
