Description
E. R. LB MANQUAIS. OUTLET BOX. APPLICATION FILED 8EPT.10, 1909;,
977,643, Patented Dec. 6,1910.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST R. LE MANQUAIS, OF ECONOMY, PENNSYLVANIA.
OUTLET-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Application filed September 10, 1909. Serial No. 517,023.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEs'r R. LE MAN- UAIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Economy, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented '.new and useful Improvements in Outletappear in the following. complete description.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawingls forming a part of this specification in w ich simi ar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a view showin my outlet box as installed; Fig. 2 is an en view showingthe two sections joined together; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 -3 of Fi 2, the collar being secured in place; and ig. 4 is a perspective view showing one of the sections.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that two sections 5 are provided, each of the said sections 5 having a rear portion 6 with a straight edge 8 thereacross, the edge of each of the rear portions 6 fr6m one end of the straight edge to the other being angular in shape, there being a rim 7 around this angular portion. An ear 9 with a slot 10 is secured to one end of each of the rims 7, there being a screw 11 meshing in a screw thread in the rim 7 'near its other end. By this construction, when the two sections are disposed with their straight edges 8 abutting, the ear 9 will be disposed over the edge of the neighborin rim with the screw meshing in the screw t read in the said edge disposed in the slot 10 of the ear so that when the screw 11 is turned home, its head will engage the ear 9 to hold the sections together.
The terminals 12 of the ears 9 are-flared upwardly to prevent the screws 11 from slipping over the said terminals without the screws being turned to raise their heads from the rims.
To the rim 7 are secured lugs 13 having threaded orifices 14 in which mesh screws 15, the lugs 13 being disposed one on each of the rims 7, so that when the two sections 5 are secured together, one of the lugs 13 will be disposed immediately opposite the other lug 13. A collar 16 has a flange 18' around one of its ends, this flange having radially disposed slots 19 and 20 which are substantially in alinement with each other, the slot 19 extending through the side of-the collar 16 at 21, and the slot 20 extending through the outer edge of the flange, this construction being provided so that the collar may be slid laterally to dispose thev screws 15 in the slots 19 and 20, in which the flange 18 will be held against the lugs 13. When the two sections 5 are united, there is a central opening 22 through them through which may be disposedthegas pipe 23. There are also orifices 24, in which may be disposed screws 25 for securing the outlet box to a rafter 26. Curved slots 27 are made .in the rear portion 6 of the sections 5, and also in the rims 7 of the sections 5, it being possible for the mechanic with a pair of pincers to break out the portion of the sections inclosed by the said curved slots 27 to permit of the introduction of a 'cable holder 28.
This cable holder 28 may be made to hold a single cable 29 or two such cables. When a cable holder 28 is used, which is adapted to hold only one cable 29, the portions of the sections inclosed by the curved slots 27 'are removed, but if a larger cable holder is to be used, one that will hold two cables 29, the portions of the sections inclosed by the curved slots 30 are-removed by the operatorv with his pincers, the opening thus made be ing suflicient for the introduction of a double cable holder. i
In using my invention the portions of the sections 5, inclosed by the curved slots 31,
are removed to permit the sections to be dis-- posed with the gas pipe 23 within the openlng 22 made by the breaking away of the sections 5 at the said curved slots 31. If a cable is to be introduced in the outlet box from the rear, the rear portion of the sections is broken away within the curved slots 27 or 30 and in the opening thus made a cable holder 28 is introduced. If a cable is to be led into the outlet box through its rim or side, the rim or side is broken away within the curved slots 27 or 30, and the cable holderv is then inserted in the rim or side of the outlet box. When the cable holder is inserted in the rear of the outlet box, the
holder 28 is secured in place relatively to the outlet box. In the same way a cable holder 28 may be introduced in the .side or rim 7 of the outlet box.
After the sections 5 havebeen clamped together with the cables and cable holders in place, the collar 16 is adjusted in position. This may be readily done, for b a slight lateral movement of the collar re atively to the sections 5, one of the screws 15 may slid into the slot 20 from the outer side of the flange, the other screw 15 being slid into the slot 19 through the opening21 in the side of the collar. When this has been done, the screws 15 are turned home against the flange 18. The cap 33 may be disposed around the gas ipe 23 to cover the o enin 24, when it will e found that the cab es W1 1 be held secured in a manner approved by the Board of Underwriters.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent: p
1. An outlet box havinga body with a rear portion and a rimtherearound, there beingthreaded orifices in the body,-a collar having a'flange about one of its ends, there being a slot in the flange which extends through its outer edge, there being a second slot in the flange opposite the first-menma n tioned slot, which extends through the collar, and screws disposed in the slots which mesh in the threaded orifices in the body.
2. In an outlet box, two sections, each composed of a member and a rim bent about a portion of the edge of the member, the two members abutting to form the back of the box, and the terminals of the two rims abutting, the rims forming the side of a box, a collar having a flange aboutone of its ends, there being a slot in the flange, whichextends through the outer edge, there being a second slot in the flan e opposite to the first mentioned slot, w ich ,extends through the collar, and screws disposed in the slots, which mesh in threaded orifices in the sections.
3. In an outlet box, a plurality of sections, each composed of a member and a rim bent around a portion of the ed e of the member, the members abuttmg to orm, the back of the box, and the terminals of the rims abutting, the rims forming the side of the box, there being markings in the sections which inclose portions which may be readily removed to permit of the insertion of cable holders, a slotted ear on each of the rims, which projects over a neighboring run, a screw which meshes in a screw thread on each of the rims, the screws being disposedin the slots on the ears respectively, a collar having a flange about one of its ends, ears on the rims having threaded orifices, screws which mesh in the said threaded orifices, there being a slot in the flange which extends through its outer edge, and a secondslot in the flange, opposite thereto, which extends through the collar, the last mentioned screws being disposed in the said slots.
In' testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
, ERNIST R. LE MANQUAIS.
