common-Box.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. HINSDILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conduit-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements, and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described-and subse uently claimed.
Reference may ahead to the accompanying drawings and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar characters-refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in isometrical perspective of the body of my improved conduit-box. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the cover thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the covered side of a box of different sha e from that shown in Fig. 1, partly brolzen away, and shown in section, with the conduit-pi e connected with one end of the box and s own in central longitudinal section. a
The principal object of the invention is to facilitate the application of outlet-boxes to conduit-pipes, as well as to simplify the construction of the outlet-box.
Referrinj to the drawings, wherein the invention is s own in its preferred form, 1 represents the body of the outlet-box, having an open side adapted to be closed by a cover 2. One or both ends of the box-body are formed with open slots 3, extending to the open side thereo forming parallel flanges 4 4, extending from the open side of the box inwardly. The box-body is adapted to be connected with the end of a conduit-pipe 5, throu h which the circuit-wires lead lnto or from t e box. The end of the conduit-pipe 5 is exteriorly screw-threaded and adapted to receive thereon a pair of nuts 6 and 7, the pipe being adapted to occupy the open slot 3 in the end of the boxipe and the nuts 6 and 7 to embrace and ci amp between them the parallel flanges 4 on op osite sides of said slot.
The construction of the box is such that when the cover is removed the conduit-pipe, with the two nuts 6 and 7 upon its threaded portion, can be insertedin osition through the open side of the box an the open endof slot 3, the nuts 6 and 7 being spaced sufli- Specification of Letters Patent.

cientl apart to receive therebetween the side fliinges 4. After the pipe has been thus inserted to the bottom of the slot 3 the nut 7 is screwed toward the end of the pipe until the flanges 4 are tightly clamped between the two nuts, thereb securing the box upon the conduit-pipe. hen the box has been thus applied and secured to the ipe, the cover is applied to the open side of the box and secured thereupon by means of the screws 8, inserted through apertures 9 in the cover into the side walls of the box-body.
I The cover is provided with an end flange 10 I of less thickness than the flan es 4, adapted to fill the space between said flanges, havin its end recessed, as shown at 11, to fit around the pipe 5, said flange 10 being adapted to pass freely between the nuts 6 and 7.
The cover is provided with an outlet-aperture 12 for the branch wires, (not shown,) which are connected with the main circuitwires within the box.
My improved box can be applied to or removed from the end of a conduit-pipe or the neighboring ends of two or more conduitpipes, it only being necessary to remove the cover from the box and loosen the lockingnuts 7, whereupon the box can be slipped off from the pipe or pipes, leaving the circuitwires free of access to the workman and affording him ample space within which to perform his duties.
The nut 6 is shown provided with a sheetmetal bead 13 to prevent injurious contactof the circuit-wires with the ends of the pipe. The circuit-wires are not shown.
As a means for preventing accidental displacement-of the box in case the nut 7 should accidentally become sli htly loosened, so as not to engage-with sufflcient force the end wall of the box, I have shown the end wall of the box provided on its outer side with lugs 14, adapted to overhang the nut 7 after the same has been partly screwed to its seat,
whereby such displacement of the box is pre-.
vented.
In applying the box to the conduit-pipe it is only necessary to separate the nuts 6 and 7 sufiiciently to permit the end wall flanges 4 and lugs 14 to pass therebetween.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An outlet-box for conduits provided with an open side and an open slot in its end extending inwardly from said open side, and
having an eppasits sides of said slot the enter-side at its mwefl newthe 0 en :0 wardly-extendmg flanges; and a cover for the end of sstid slot an outwardly-extending ug. open sideof the box having e flange adapted In testimony whereof .I have hereunto set to occup the 0 an end of said slot, and of a my hand this 17th day of April, 1906.
less thic ess t an the end Wall flanges on opposite sides of said slot. CHARLES HINSDILL' 2. An outlet-box for conduits provided Witnesses: with an apen side and an open slot in its end E. OREILLY,
extending from said open side, and on 1 J. DQNSBACH,
