Description
dat seca PETER CAMPBELL, or. oAnRoLL'row'N, rnNiv-svLvANIA` Lette/rs Patent No. 97,760, dated December 1K4, 1S69.`
; IMBRQVED RAILWAY-GATE.
Thechedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part; of the same.
To all whom it may concern;`
Bc it known that I, `Pn'rnn CAMPBELL, of Carroll# town, in the county of `Gambria, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement .in RailroadGates; and I do hereby declare thefol- "lowing tobe a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
sufficient to enable others skilled in `the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, ibrming part of this invention, "andin whichi Figure 1 is a top view; Figure 2, a partial front view;` and Figure 3, an end view, from the line y y, fig. 1.
The gate which `forni's `the subject of this invention, is held in position across the `track by means of levercatches, pivoted tothe rails in such a manner that the weightof an approaching caror train depresses the rails and releases the` catches, allowing the gate to be thrown back against its post when struck bythe car or engine, and thereheld by a spring until the train has entirely passed, `'when the rails resume their former position, thereby releasing the` spring which holds the gate open, and permitting it to swing across the track, whereit is held as' before. l i s l'lhe invention consists in the construction and ar rangement of parts as hereinafter set forth.
[will now proceed to describe my invention in detail referring to the drawings, in the several figures of wlnclrsimilar letters indicate like parts. y
The gate proper is constructedin any suitable manuel" which will insure strength, and is hung to a post, A, by hinges, soconstructed or arranged Ias to canse the gate t`o close by gravity.
Blnnay represent the rails of the track.
The inner rail,B, is rigidly secured to the ,sleepers CC C C?, but the outer one, B', is fastened only at C and G3, the other sleepers being cut away to allow of the depression'ofthe rail.
D is a sort of platform at the side of the track, on which are pivoted barsE E', having bevelled endsand with shoulders a a, between which the gate is held in position across the track.`
l F F are levers, each ofv which is pivoted at one'end ,to the rail B', and at `the other to one of the bars l These levers' each have a fulcrum, 1).
i Gr l' are rods, with bent portions l c c, which have more or lcsselasticity. i
These rods are pivoted at d d, and are connected with the outer rail B'. Their oiice is to hold the gate 'opernfas will ce hereinafter described.
H Hare posts, againstwhich the gate is thrown when struck by the car` or engine. 4 'y They are each provided with a spring,re, with which from being loosened or injured.
AI I represent springs, applied to the gate for receiving and neutralizing the shock when the gate is opened by the car or engine. l
The gatel opens in either direction. v l
'lhc operation is as follows:
Suppose a train to be approaching in the direction of the arrow, figs.,1 vand 2. As soon as the. engine rea-ches the section of track shown in thc drawing, the rail B\\vill be depressed, at'the same time depressing the bar E, through the medium of lever F. The engine then strikes the gate, or rather the springs at-y tached to it, and throws it back against the post H', where it is held by the bent portion of rod G springing upand preventing its return. As soon as -the -train has passeth'the rail B', being relieved lof pressure, springs up, depressing the holder G', which releases the gate, and elevating the catch E. The gate now swings` by gravity to the position in which it is shown, where it is held between the shoulders a a. of `'the bars E .E2
v.lfhe advantages of this gate are, that itis very sirnple and inexpensive, and is at the same time antomatic and certain in its operation.
Having thus `described my invention,
What L claim as new, and desire to secure by Let'- ters Patent, isc l. The self-closing gate, provided with springs I, as and for thepurpose set fortln l 2. The pivoted spring-holders G G', when connected with the rail B', for the purpose and substantially as described.
' 3. The catch-bars E E' and levers F F,`in combinaranged to operate substantially as described.
spring-rail v13', posts H H, holders G G', and catclr bars E` E', and levers F F, all constructed and, arranged to operate substantially as described.

tion with the spring-rail B', when constructed and ar- 4. The combination ofthe self-closing gate, the' 'To' the above specification of my invention, I have
