To all whom it may concern;`
Bc it known that I, `Pn'rnn CAMPBELL, of Carroll# town, in the county of `Gambria, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement .in RailroadGates; and I do hereby declare thefol- "lowing tobe a full, clear, and exact description thereof,

'lhc operation is as follows:
Suppose a train to be approaching in the direction of the arrow, figs.,1 vand 2. As soon as the. engine rea-ches the section of track shown in thc drawing, the rail B\\vill be depressed, at'the same time depressing the bar E, through the medium of lever F. The engine then strikes the gate, or rather the springs at-y tached to it, and throws it back against the post H', where it is held by the bent portion of rod G springing upand preventing its return. As soon as -the -train has passeth'the rail B', being relieved lof pressure, springs up, depressing the holder G', which releases the gate, and elevating the catch E. The gate now swings` by gravity to the position in which it is shown, where it is held between the shoulders a a. of `'the bars E .E2
v.lfhe advantages of this gate are, that itis very sirnple and inexpensive, and is at the same time antomatic and certain in its operation.
